Sep 4, 2010 – Day 5 – Daily Summary – Opening Conference Business

Posted on September 4, 2010November 27, 2022 by caws.archivist

Kevin Murphy: In theory, we should be getting ready to start today.

Keith Froher: Mr. Chair, were we not supposed to start session today at 8:00 am.

Kevin Murphy: Called to order. We have an announcement.

Siobhan Ayer: We have evaluation forms on the back table. It is one of the ways we can best serve you in the future. There is a basket to turn in the filled out form at the back. Please take a few minutes and fill out the evaluations.

Kevin Murphy: we also have referral forms up at the front if you would like to fill one out. Please take your seats and cease your conversations. Janice Whitted led us in the “We” version of the Serenity Prayer. Johnny Segal read “Who Is a Cocaine Addict?” (provided by Patrick Potter). It is 8:10 am on Saturday morning September 4. We will begin roll call from the left side of the room. There are 147 votes and the quorum will be 98. Could I see Brian Keefer and Elizabeth Saldebar up at the dais? We are going to deal with a motion from yesterday. Brian Keefer: Motion to amend a previously passed motion:

MOTION AS PASSED: To strike and add language within Paragraph 3 in the Information Technology (IT) Committee Workbook and Guidelines, Page 3 under section entitled “Introduction”, and add new material immediately following said paragraph to read:

Social networking, blogging, micro-blogging, and other tools have emerged as daily communication methods for individual members. When using these tools, we need always be mindful to not link to C.A. web sites, not use the C.A. logo, Cocaine Anonymous name, or other registered trademarks of C.A. (e.g., “C.A.”, “Hope, Faith and Courage”, “We’re Here and We’re Free”, etc.) and to be respectful of anonymity and other spiritual principles in accordance with the Twelve Traditions of C.A.. It is further suggested that members refrain from posting on any of the tools mentioned above any photos

and/or videos that identify any activity, entity or person as being associated with Cocaine Anonymous.

Although most are password protected, social networking web sites still publicly expose a great deal of personal information about the user. There are difficult and confusing issues to be navigated by the user not concerned with anonymity, let alone those of us in recovery. It is impossible to deny the tremendous possibility social networking sites present to aide us in carrying out our primary purpose, but our urge for progress should be tempered by methodical and deliberate consideration. The fact remains that social networking sites are public forums, and should be treated as such. The long form of the Eleventh Tradition states in part that “…our names and pictures as members ought not be broadcast, filmed or publicly printed.” The EleventhTradition reminds us that our names and pictures should not be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed. While the final choice and ultimate responsibility of safeguarding the traditions rests with the individual, it should be noted that the spiritual principle of anonymity protects not only the member, but also the fellowship as a whole.

Nothing presented here specifically precludes a local District, Area, or Group from using these tools as part of their outreach; however, any such decision should be guided by group conscience, respect for our Traditions, and the effect upon the Fellowship as a whole. As such, it is suggested that decisions to adapt social networking and blogging tools for use by a local District, Area, or Group carrying the message be done only after careful deliberation and discussion within the Fellowship, including – if possible – the Regional Trustee.

Amendment:

Replace language in the Information Technology (IT) Workbook and Guidelines in the section entitled “Introduction” on Page 3, new paragraph 4, the sentence which reads:

“The long form of the Eleventh Tradition states that “…our names, and pictures as members ought not be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed.” Be replaced with

The Eleventh Tradition reminds us that our names and pictures should not be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed. Second.

Kevin Murphy: Any discussion? Seeing none. This is a majority vote. Prepare yourselves to vote. The motion passes unanimously.

Elizabeth Saldebar: MOTION to rescind the motion passed last night as part of the S&B report in reference to Referral #6667 regarding Standing Rule 7. Second.

The previously passed motion is as follows: MOTION: Insert on page 37 of WSM, Standing Rule 7: There may be up to three Conference Sessions (Morning, Afternoon and Evening) in the Conference Day. Conference Sessions begin with roll call and end with an adjournment of that session, day or Conference. The first session of the day begins with a roll call and all sessions end with an adjournment of that session, day, or conference.

Kevin Murphy: Would you like to speak to your motion?

Elizabeth Saldebar: We are actually in Session from Tuesday until Monday and we take breaks and recesses. In the past, we have had roll call twice a day in the past. When we come and do Conference business, standing rules are a very important piece of this body. If we rescind this motion and I would hope that someone would make a motion to send back to committee. It is not accurate as to how we actually do business.

Approved Page 3

Kevin Murphy: any further debate? Seeing none. Motion to rescind passes with minor opposition with substantial unanimity. The motion is rescinded and we are on to the next order of business. There is no motion to refer and the committee is welcome to take another look at it. Is the H&I Committee ready to go?
