MINUTES COCAINE ANONYMOUS GENERAL SERVICES BOARD MEETING

MAY 29, 1984

ATTENDEES

Ray Grossa
Candy Jordan
Gil Mosko
Johnny Segal
Mitch Sperling

Johnny Segal appointed Mitch Sperling to bring food to the next Board meeting.

I. OLD BUSINESS

A. TREASURER’S REPORT

Mitch reported that the current balance in the General Services account is $4,185.43.

Mitch talked to John Olivera about the outstanding $100 for the Laker tickets. They agreed for John to make payments to C.A. through Mitch.

Johnny Segal mentioned that he knows a C.P.A. who does tax work. His name is Kenny, and he will give Mitch a call.

Mitch will call the IRS to find out if the G.S.O. needs to file.

Candy Jordan has not yet purchased an adding machine, but will do so shortly.

Gil Mosko sent a thank-you letter to Sue for her assistance in setting up C.A.’s accounting system.

Robin Warga will check the C.A. post office box once a week for mail.

B. BOARD MEMBER REMOVAL

Johnny said that he had informed Arthur Nidetz of his removal from the Board. He requested that Barbara Williams go through past Board meeting minutes and report attendance of the members.

C. PUBLIC INFORMATION REPORT

Gil reported that:

– Dallas Times Herald Newspaper called regarding an article

on C.A. Gil gave them requested information.

— Gil contacted the new administrator at Beverly Glen Hospital and discussed rent for the C.A. office and meeting place. He mentioned that he would like to start monthly payments, as veil as pay retroactive to a year ago. It was agreed by the Board to pay $5.00 per month. Gil will send a letter in confirmation.

— Gil mentioned that he has sent information in response to inquiries from organizations and individuals about C.A. and he listed them.

– The April issue of Dr. Sidney Cohen’s newsletter to doctors is about C.A.

– The Newsweek article, “Getting Straight”, came out Monday. Johnny requested that Gil send a letter to the editors thanking them and giving them C.A.’s phone number and mailing address for potential inquiries from readers.

Ray gave Gil 50 Fact Files for mailing.

Ray will contact the Post Office regarding a tax exempt mailing discount.

The need for a mailing list of people inquiring about C.A. and requesting information was discussed. Gil will contact Bruce to request word processing of the list. Candy volunteered a mailing list computer program for a small computer. Temporarily, Robin will bring a Rolodex for Gil to use.

Gil has begin to send out National Directories to the people to whom Tom Kenny sent started kits, but ran out.

Ray reported that Nina is ready to put the National Directory on the word processor, lie would like to start with the L.A. Directory, however. He will call Nina regarding whom she should report to on the processing of the National Directory.

Bruce is still working on programming his word processor for the hospital notification letter.

D. LITERATURE COMMITTEE REPORT

Johnny spoke to Marshall to inform him of the Committee Heads meeting in June.

Mitch will check into copyrighting of literature.

E. OFFICE MANAGER’S REPORT

Ray passed out copies of the L.A. Directory typed on the word processor. A motion was made, seconded, and passed not to charge for the directories. Ray will have 2,000 copies printed on colored paper for the monthly meeting. Misty will call around to find the most inexpensive copy place. While doing this, she will explain that C.A. is looking for a regular printer for their work. Mitch suggested Copycenter for 2.5 cents per copy.

Johnny bought the back-up telephone answering machine. He and Ray discussed having rotary lines with 2 numbers: one with a short information message, and the other with the directory.

Ray will call Phonemate and ask if a cancelled check or a thank-you letter is sufficient to have a broken answering machine fixed under warranty.

Ray reported that the Volunteer list form is being typed.

He will have 1,000 copies made on colored paper for the monthly meeting.
Ray gave the new Cocanon number to the people manning the C.A. Hotline.
Ray is still working on making copies of C.A. articles.

F. C.A. CHIPS

Gil will get the remaining back order of chips this week.

Gil mentioned that the San Diego source can produce chips for 12 cents each. He can change the die easily, and can handle large orders. The Board will select slogans for a vote at the monthly G.S1R. meeting. Then Gil will order. Gil will find out information on changing shapes and the cost.

G. JULY 4T11 MARATHON MEETING

Robin mentioned that Tom Kenny said that the Sunset Union Hall could be used for the meeting. Robin will have 2,000 flyers for the G.S.R. monthly meeting.
Por meeting format assignments, Robin will go through the Directory, starting with the Sunday meeting and assign times.

The beach party has been temporarily postponed.

H. NEW CENTRAL OFFICE

Mitch reported that the phone company would not tell him the boundaries of the current C.A, phone number. He mentioned 2 alternatives: get a new phone and have call forwarding from the old to the new number, or referral service to a new number for a period of time.

Ray and Johnny discussed the need for 3 phones. Leases and options were also discussed.

Johnny and Mitch will drive around looking for office space on Friday. A suggestion was made to find a contractor’s warehouse.

I. NEW COMMITTEES

Johnny mentioned that the committee chairpersons should be prepared to discuss the functions of their committees at the Board/Committee Chairperson meeting.

Barbara will call Cindy and ask her to bring the volunteer lists to the monthly meeting, broken down by committee.

There vas discussion on sobriety minimums for panels for hospitals, and prisons. The Board agreed not to worry about it at present.

Pia is working on getting a softball field, and Steve will buy softball equipment.

J. GUIDELINES FOR MEETING SECRETARIES AND G.S.R.s

The purpose of these guidelines will be to suggest minimum sobriety times, how to handle elections, and other functions and will be sent out with starter kits.

The discussion was tabled until the next Board meeting. Barbara will bring the guidelines mentioned at a prior meeting, and add this to the agenda as the first item of business.

K. C.A. SPRING GRATITUDE MEETING TAPES

Barbara reported that the copies could be made for $1.45 each for under 100 copies. The price would be a little cheaper for over 100. Turnaround time on production is one day and they can make as many as needed. The wording on the label is C.A.’s choice. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to buy 100 tapes now.

Future cassette editing was discussed. It was agreed that only speakers be on the tape, not the entire meeting.

Barbara will ask Tim if any editing was done on the tapes, and hov long the tapes run. She will call A.A. and find out how much they charge for tapes. She will order 100 tapes for the next monthly meeting. She will find out if C.A. can send them a check, and will call Mitch with the amount.

The tape label should read: “COCAINE ANONYMOUS LOS ANGELES AREA ANNUAL SPRING GRATITUDE MEETING – May 5, 1984” and list the C.A. phone number.
A Monday night meeting for taping speakers was discussed.

L. NATIONAL C.A./WORLD SERVICES

Ray reported he received 2 more inquiries for starting meeting in Hawaii.

Ray gave Mitch an outline for World Services. He gave him a copy of N.A. bylaws.

It was agreed that a vote for incorporating World Services should be taken at the monthly meeting. The reservation of the name and Articles of incorporation will be tabled until after the meeting vote. Barbara will add this item to the agenda.

Mitch will check on why C.A. didn’t received its filing fees back from the last filing with Secretary of State.

M. MEETING CHANGES/ADDITIONS

There is a new Book Study meeting at Studio 12.

Charter Pacific Hospital would like a meeting. Board members will contact people in the area to see if anyone is interested in starting a meeting.

II. NEW BUSINESS

A. AD IN “VARIETY” MAGAZINE

Candy mentioned that Tom Kenny may still be using C.A.’s name in his ad. Johnny will check into it.

B. MIDNIGHT MEETING

Robin reported that it is going OK, but with some cross-talk. He will check it out again.

C. SAN DIEGO MEETING

A nev speaker meeting is starting. They requested that word be spread to find speakers for the meeting. Several of the Board members volunteered.

The meeting adjourned at 10:00 p.m. The next Board meeting is scheduled for June 12, 1984 at 7:30 p.m. at Johnny Segal’s house.
