MINUTES OF JUNE 14, 1990

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm with the Serenity Prayer.
Jay W. read the 10th Tradition.
Bunny read the minutes from May 10. Motion was made to accept the minutes wiht corrections. Seconded and passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT – MARY C.

It was also discussed that the office will be cleaned and painted on July 28th a Saturday. David and Mary will clean the carpets before that.
The U.S, Postal Service ahs notified the office that someone is using the postal meter and is misusing it. There was discussion that the meter will be locked – a memo will be sent out.
$5,000 – for ’91 convention

Jay W. submitted (attached) articles to be put into archives. Four categories 1. Print, 2. TV, 3. Radio, 4. Movie Theatre so they can be aired on these mediums. Jay is also putting together cover letters for board approval to be submitted to these medias.
Jay also submitted letter for board approval (see letter) – it will cost $100 or $125 to print mailing labels. There was a motion to approve letter and to get P.I. to obtain their own letterhead, also to add a fax number. Motion was seconded and passed.
NIDA hotline will now refer to CA 800 number – it was suggested that the board receive the ad letter going out from public information. P.I. committee would like to use W.S.O. JUne 30th at 10:00 am for their next meeting.

Public information packets were returned with changes to Mary. Information letter will be drafted for people who need information about getting sober – ask Helene,
Helene has asked public information for a public service announcement in Spanish ASAP.
NEWSGRAM – Bill Z.
Nancy and Sue are two people working on articles for nest issue. Motion was made to direct newsgram for summer with financial statement – to be published by the end of July. Seconded. There was discussion – friendly amendment to be completed by 3rd week in August. Accepted, seconded and passed.
CONNECTION – Bill Z.
Information is ready for summer issues. How many copies? 3,000 copies format needs help to make it similar to the newsgram. Motion was made to reformat the connection, seconded and passed.
WORLD DIRECTORIES – David C.
David has a co-chair, Mitch B. from the San FErnando Valley – possibly one week in August for delivery – cost will be .95 or $1.00 per book, up to $1.10. David will contact all trustees to get updated directories from their areas. Update is needed by 2nd week in July.
LONERS – Pam K.
Pam asked for input – starting to get letters from all over and needs to schedule a long letter monthly. Also Pam would like to bring back extra requests i.e. – starter kits for CA meeting info. Jay stated that all those things should go directly to W.S.O. public information committee.
Pam would like to start archiving letters – there is a need to get help on mailing labels. Mary will look into the situation. Pam asked Jay to assist her in getting together generic longer letters. Pam submitted letters for approval to loners. Seconded and passed.
June 30th will be the first offical mailing. Pam needs updated list of loner’s sponsors from P.I. A mailing list was given to David.
OLD BUSINESS
A. New printer for literature – Major Graphics now has the artwork and ; production will start 3rd week of June. Helene is typing a letter to send to Major Graphic – contact person is Michael Dordis.
B. Scrolls – trustee contacted AA and got permission to print out scrolls like they do. Helene is going to call Kinkos for a quote.
C. Los Angeles business license – August 31, 1989. Mary sent in paperwork for business permit – it has been sitting in social services – they have been notified of expedient status and it is forthcoming. They will be sending for 1989 – a form that states we have a non-profit status.

D. Trustee signatures postponed
E. Computer and printer – bid will be done by June 26th by the spending committee. They will be presented at the board meeting by the 12th of July.
F. Order forms: tips and pocket cards were checked on and they are not done yet.
G. 70 – 30 plans literature is going out with all orders.
H. Starter kits are to be turned over to David to keep up – system is to be part of the office manual and
I. Helene will be writing a letter requesting non-profit status for W.S.O.
J. Copy of office manual will be sent to Debbie B.

-delivered archive material, including:
-Los Angeles Times article -Los Angeles Magazine article -Valley Daily News article -Washington Post clipping
-The Public Information Committee has assigned four of its members the responsible ty for investigating the possibility of running PSAs in each of four outlets. Each member will be responsible for exploring,one specific outlet. The four outlets are 1) television, 2) radio, 3) print (magazines and newspapers), and 4) national movie theater chains (to run PSAs before the movie and previews commence). PI Committee will draft a series of letters (for board approval) requesting each outlet to utilize our PSAs. All of these PSA outlets will be at the national level, and will utilize the CA 1-800 phone number,
-Jay W. has written a draft letter to American Passage Media, an ad agency specializing in the college, university, and military newspaper niche. The letter requests a copy of their mailing list (on mailing labels) so that we can request that these newspapers run our PSAs on an ongoing “space available” basis. We, of course, are offering to pay any expenses involved in producing such a list for us (estimated at $100 – $125). Board approval of the letter is requested, as is World Service Public Information Committee letterhead.
-Jay W. contacted the Musicare 1-800 drug line, and was referred by recording to the NIDA (National Institute of Drug Abuse) 1-800 phone line. They were given our new 1-800 number, and were very appreciative of it. Phone call will be followed up with a letter, i.e., with written confirmation of our 1-800 number.
-The Public Information Committee is unanimous in recommending that a television PSA be developed which is in black and white, silent and still. That is, we envision a black and white print message (such as “If you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, call Cocaine Anonymous – 1-800-347-8998”) filling the screen for 5, 10, or 15 seconds, while the sound track is silent. We believe this PSA would be seen as avant garde by the television people, and therefore be aired frequently. We also believe that the silent sound track and black & white presentation would catch the viewers attention. Finally, we believe such a PSA could be produced very inexpensively.
-PI Committee requested WS0 for Committee meeting at 10:00 a.m. on 30 June 1990.
-Materials for the Public Information package have been proof-read, and will be transferred to Committee letterhead as soon as same is secured. Jay W. will redraft letter which refers addict in area with no CA meeting to AA/NA to comply with Board wishes that such people be referred to the Loner Program and be sent a Starter Kit.
-Issue of transferring PR/PR CA Fact Sheet from PR/PR letterhead to CA letterhead was raised and tabled until the next meeting.

The labels we are requesting’would be used to forward our print Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to these newspapers , and to request that they publish-them on a “space available” basis. – —
Cocaine Anonymous is a non-profit, self-supporting, non-religious, non-political fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope to recover from their addiction, and to help others achieve the same freedom. Cocaine Anonymous is concerned solely with the personal recovery and continued sobriety of individual addicts who turn to the fellowship for help.
From literature on your organisation, we are aware that you use a variety of vehicles to penetrate the college, university, and military markets. If you have any suggestions on how we might further reach those markets, we would greatly appreciate that input.
