MINUTES COCAINE ANONYMOUS
GENERAL SERVICES BOARD MEETING
JANUARY 11, 1984

I. OLD BUSINESS/REPORTS

A. TREASURER’S REPORT

Mitch reported that the current balance in the General Services account is SI170.60.

B. TAX STATUS

Mitch stated that he is still waiting for a tax ID number from Fresno.

C. PUBLIC INFORMATION REPORT

Gil explained that Ray gave him a list of all out-of-county and state meetings to which starter kits have been issued. Gil has contacted all of the meeting representatives, sent C.A. literature, and obtained addresses of all ongoing meetings for the National Directory. Gil will type the directory and give it to Ray. 200 copies will be made and sent to the meetings for correction.

Gil mentioned that he did telephone interviews with KYXI radio Portland, Oregon and the Detroit Free Press.

Tom K. remarked that C.A. has 6 10-second dubbed commercials from Rift. In the future, MGM will produce the commercials. Channel 9 will be the first to telecast in a few days. They have also been delivered to channels 4 and 7.

Gil gave KRTH a written application mentioning that the tax id number is pending.

Tom K. said that Time or Newsweek magazines may do articles

Tom K. mentioned that “Alcoholism Today” magazine called and he sent them a Fact File. He also said that an article on cocaine appeared in “Variety” Magazine.

Monroe High School requested a speaker from C.A. for an event scheduled for January 12. It was agreed that a speaker would be furnished in the future.

Gil identified the members of the Public Information com­mittee and their functions:

Robin – judicial, D.U.I. schools, TV, radio, courts
John O. – newspapers, magazines, hospitals
Gil M. – national directory

Ray said that he has not heard from Playboy magazine regard- their article on recovery.

Gil commented that he has not yet received information on discounts for rooms from the Parks Department, he will contact them.

Tom K. suggested giving Gil a copy of a letter written by Ben Irwin which is used to send to churches.

Robin announced that he is speaking at a coordinators’ meeting for Chemical People on January 18. He will ask the Director of P.R. of the American Legion for a room.

Mitch stated that he will work on getting the Daily Journal (a legal newspaper) to donate space for an ad.

Gil will write a thank you letter to Rift and send him a check for $1.00 for production of the C.A. commercials.

Ray mentioned that Gil sent the 20-second slogan to KPRO Riverside. They also want copy for a 60-second spot. Members of the G.S. Board will remain after the meeting to work on the copy.

D. NATIONAL STATUS

Mitch reported that Bernard is willing to do a trademark search with him if the G.S.O. draws up the design. It will cost $150 to do the search. Mitch suggested that both the the name and logo can be trademarked by including the name in the logotype. Gil will ask Marsha for help in the design of a trademark and will contact other graphic artists.

Johnny talked to Nolan regarding the organization of a national C.A. convention. Nolan has prior experience in this area and has expressed interest in setting up this event. Johnny will talk further with him. mentioning our financial situation and asking him to report back with details.

E. LITERATURE COMMITTEE REPORT

Mitch announced that Francie S. will head the committee, said that the “First 30 Days’* brochure will be completed on January 12. and the other 2 brochures in 2 weeks.

F. OFFICE MANAGER’S REPORT

Ray said that he has changed the Hot Line tape reflecting the new meetings. New directories are also being typed. He mentioned that he is giving out phone numbers for Families Anonymous and Jeanine’s number for Coke—Anon.

Ray said that he is reorganizing the Hot Line phone people again.

Ray stated that he is indexing the volunteer sheets. Johnny suggested creating lists of functions (ie; driver volunteers for meetings, speakers)

Ray will begin organizing a file of C.A. articles.

G. ATHLETICS COMMITTEE REPORT

No report.

H. MEETING CHANGES/ADDITIONS

Clare Foundation Senior Citizen Center has a new Monday noon meeting.

Linda V. wants to start a meeting at Gardena Memorial Hospital on a Sunday or Thursday. She needs someone to run the meeting.

A meeting place in Torrance needs a secretary.

Johnny suggested that an announcement requesting a secretary for the Gardena and Torrance meeting be made at the next monthly meeting.

Arthur will form a committee for rotating secretaries for meetings. There will be a new person each week to act as both secretary and speaker. Arthur will start the Gardena meeting this way.

The Saturday Long Beach meeting was discussed. Tom K. will check on someone to run the meeting. A vote to delete the meeting from the directory was tabled. A suggestion was made to send a panel there for a month. Mitch and Gil will check into it and report back.

Bud will have a Monday Step Study meeting in couple of weeks.

There is a need for more west valley meetings. Arthur will start a meeting in March.

Arthur mentioned that the Thursday Cedars meeting is holding its own financially and does not need support from the G.S. office at this time.

Another place is needed for a Monday meeting in the city of L.A.

Mitch and Arthur will start a Friday day meeting at Studio 12 in the valley at 12406 Magnolia.

II. NEW BUSINESS

A. ACCOUNTANT

Mitch said that he has Diane’s telephone number. but has been unsuccessful in contacting her. He got the number of another accountant from skills lists brought to the meeting.

B. CLUBHOUSE

Tom K. is pendinq on a lead on a clubhouse in L.A. It cannot be affiliated with C.A. It must be rented by private individuals like an Alano club.

C. OFFICE

Requests for office space will be mentioned in “Variety” Magazine.

D. CHIPS

The person originally producing the C.A. sobriety chips is still in business. Gil will be purchasing more from her shortly. It was suggested that he obtain a few regular 1-year chips.

Neil still owes $102.00 for chips.

E. OFFICE KEY

Gil received a key to the office, but copies still need to be made. Mitch will get a copy of the key made.

F. PHONE BILL

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to pay Ray $500.00 on his phone bill. Mitch wrote him a check for the above amount.

G. APRIL FOOLS DAY EVENT

Johnny will organize an entertainment committee this week for this event and events scheduled for the near future.

The meeting adjourned at 9:40 p.m.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, 1984 at 7:30 p.m. at Johnny’s house.
