CA WORLD SERVICE CONFERENCE 2011

WORLD SERVICE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REPORT

On behalf of the WSBT, I would like to thank the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous for allowing us to be of service during the past year.

Before I proceed with our report, I would like to announce the outcome of the World Service Office Board Chair interviews. We are appreciative and grateful to have had two amazing and outstanding individuals willing to put their names forward for consideration for this position: Elizabeth S., and Teresa N.. The WSBT is proud to announce Teresa N. as the incoming WSOB Chair. We wish to acknowledge the outstanding service of Tom P. (current WSOB Chair) as he continues on his journey. Thank you Tom! Additionally I wish to report that all members of the WSOB have been ratified.

This year the WSBT addressed the following “topics” at the Quarterly meeting: partnership, respect for others, individual accountability, direct communication, and excellence. These topics encouraged us to understand that “how I behave is critical to what I accomplish.” It was meant to encourage PRIDE, and passionately appreciate the job we are doing for the fellowship of CA. We as a Board have worked diligently to accomplish the work in front of us. We have followed in the footprints of several past Boards to operate as effectively and as

Although we had some difficult times this past year, we were able to accomplish the following:

World Service Board of Trustees work over the last year.

• Developed the WSBT Guidelines as an internal piece that can and was distributed to the fellowship.
• Set policy for the WSOB regarding financial statements.
• Recommended office personal changes at the WSO.
• Reviewed our internal guidelines for Roles and Responsibilities.
• Advised the WSO on executive search/recruitment for replacement of DOO. Reviewed and responded to correspondence from the fellowship throughout the year.
• Added changes to the TEC internal process, including a group inventory.
• Collectively reviewed and prepared responses to all referrals (in-conference and post-conference).

• Set policy with cooperation of the WSOB, changes regarding the stickering of HFC II domestically.
• Addressed WSBT internal policy and issues.
• Conducted an internal “workshop” regarding CA financial reports.
• Interviewed candidates and advised the WSOB Chair of the WSBT selection for Director of Operations.
• Announced with cooperation of the WSOB, the new Director of Operations, Linda F.
• Participated at the CAWS 2011 World Service Convention Ratified candidates for Director at Large
• Addressed trademark and copyright issues regarding coverage in the following countries: European Community. Countries: Austria, Benelux, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom.
• Addressed issues regarding the placement of the “®” on our logo.
• Addressed concerns regarding French Translations
• Encouraged and supported the travel of the European Regional Trustee to the developing membership of Iran.
• Developed “CAWS 2012 Emergency Guidelines for Petty Cash Account” Addressed items for Literature, Chips, and Formats, per the Point system: Principle Pamphlet, SUGGESTED PARTICIPATION MEETING FORMAT of The Meeting in a Pocket, SUGGESTIONS FOR RECOVERY AND PREVENTION OF RELAPSE, THE FIRST 30 DAYS
• Crafted and approved letters of documents to be distributed to the fellowship.
• Addressed email correspondence: crafting responses, and responding. Remained within and in some cases under budget for Trustee travel.
• Addresses the following “topics” at the Quarterly meeting: partnership, respect for others, individual accountability, direct communication, and excellence.

Regarding the minutes of the WSBT; all minutes are completed, and approved through the May 2011 Quarterly meeting, as well as the August conference call, and online business May through August, 2011. They are available here to you “electronically” upon request. Please see Richard S. or Russell S. for these minutes. They will also be distributed in the December minutes.

REFERRALS THAT WERE WORKED ON DURING THE YEAR:

We worked throughout the year to craft response to the following 20 referrals. Three of them will be referred out to other committees, and one will result in a motion to the Conference floor. We will present the motion during our closing report.

Referral #6417 COMMITTEE INVENTORY

Referral 6417 is respectfully submitted to the WSBT. The referral itself is in italics. The remainder is simply supporting information / ideas / suggestions should you find them useful.

This referral is a request that the WSBT take a group inventory of itself in the spirit of assessing how well the WSBT helps the Conference to fulfill its purpose and to identify what action(s) the WSBT could take to improve the WSBT’s ability to better help the Conference fulfill its purpose.

Should the WSBT opt to take no action on this referral either at the 2010 Conference or as a post-Conference activity throughout the 2010 / 2011 year, please be kind enough to cite the WSBT’s reason(s) for not undertaking such action in the WSBT’s closing Conference report.

As individuals we undertake a personal inventory to uncover and discover things about ourselves and begin the process of growing spiritually. We continue to take personal inventories to perfect and enlarge our fit spiritual conditions.

Many CA Groups find that taking a regular inventory is healthy for the Spiritual well being of the Group and to assess how well the Group is fulfilling its primary purpose. Inventory helps the Group:

• Have a clear sense of itself and its primary purpose
• Gauge its success in fulfilling its primary purpose
• Evaluate its ability to successfully carry its message
• Ponder whether it is it right sized in its perception of itself
• Appraise its role in contributing financially
• Consider how CA is improved by the group‟s existence

Extending the self-examination practice of inventory to the District and Area has also proven to be a effective means to keep these bodies focused, efficient, effective, and on track Spiritually.

“A business which takes no regular inventory usually goes broke. Taking a commercial inventory is a fact-finding and a fact-facing process. It is an effort to discover the truth about the stock-in-trade. One object is to disclose damaged or unsalable goods, to get rid of them promptly and without regret. If the owner of the business is to be successful, he cannot fool himself about values.” [Alcoholics Anonymous, pg. 64].

The Big Book uses the metaphor of a business inventory as a means to underscore its suggestion that there is value in the inventory process. Then it applies the concept of taking an inventory to the personal L.l as a means to recover spiritually. Most CA members would agree the process of taking inventory has personal value. The Conference and its committees are the

„business‟ of CA and applying inventory at the „business L.l‟ of CA becomes more than a simple metaphor; group inventory will help keep CA from going „broke‟ spiritually, financially or in other ways. Don‟t we owe the Fellowship that effort?

There are those who would argue that taking inventory at the L.l of Conference committees, boards, or the Conference itself is not necessary. They might argue that AA or NA don‟t do this. When faced with such flawed reasoning, it might be fair to consider the size of CA‟s membership relative to these other Fellowships and ask, if we are not in some need of improving ourselves, our methods, our effectiveness then why is CA‟s membership comparatively so much smaller? If the answer is that there are simply fewer cocaine addicts than alcoholics or addicts in general then an inventory might cause us to ask, is it really efficient, effective, and in the best interests of CA as a whole to support and maintain the very large infrastructure that CA presently has in order to sustain our much smaller Fellowship? Undeniably, these are difficult questions. No one is suggesting that the inventory process will necessarily be easy though it may be.

Some would argue the inventory process is too cumbersome to perform at the Conference committee or board L.l. Is it too burdensome if the process helps us improve such that we reach out and save ten more lives this year than we did last year? Can this board be a small part of that improvement or is it perfect as it is? Tradition Two in Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions offers for consideration that sometimes the good is the enemy of the best; is this committee functioning at it best? Consider Tradition Two again – “For our group purpose, there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience.” Does this board specifically consider how well it functions by taking a group conscience (i.e. a group inventory)? If God expresses Him/Her Self in the group conscience then where is God in all this if there is no group conscience?

Others will point out that a referral similar to this was submitted at the 2008 Conference. They are right. The referral was submitted to a single committee for action. Effectively, no action was taken. That submission unwisely placed a very vital point of consideration in the hands of just a few people to be decided on everyone else‟s behalf. That is not stated to say those individuals did anything wrong but rather to say that you most likely did not have any voice in making that decision. Now you have a voice. It is important to note that the Conference membership changes yearly and the deliberation of any individual referral may have different outcomes in any given year as different members with different ranges of experience consider a referral‟s subject matter. Given this fact, and to account for the reality that sometimes it takes a L. time to effect change, it is entirely proper to submit referrals as frequently as every year.

RESPONSE:

The WSBT, as part of our regularly scheduled quarterly, close every meeting with a group inventory. It is a time and place for all members to discuss where we are at, what we have done, and areas where we need improvement. Members of the WSBT are encouraged to speak openly and freely, and changes to process have come as a result of these sessions.

Referral #6419 TRUSTEE ELECTION COMMITTEE

In the CA World Service Manual, on pg 46, under heading “Trustee Election Committee,” under sub-heading “Guidelines for the Election Process”, strike the language of line item 10 in its entirety “If neither candidate receives the required 2/3 ratification vote, the position will remain open until the next Conference. The members of the Board of Trustees will assume the duties of that position.” And replace with “If after the fourth and final ballot no election occurs, the TEC Chairperson announces that the choice will be drawn from the hat containing the top two (2) vote-receiving candidates. The first name out of the hat is the elected trustee.”

RESPONSE:

After much discussion we the WSBT referred this referral to Structure and Bylaws.

Referral #6420 – TEC

In the CA World Service Manual, on Page 44, under heading “Trustee Election Committee” insert the following language “ALL TEC interviews and voting processes and procedures shall be conducted during the CAWS Conference, shall be open to the Conference and shall be held in an area, roped off if necessary, where all Conference members can view the proceedings, if so desired.”

RESPONSE:

The WSBT believes this would cause the conference to be disrupted and would extend the conference up to two (2) days. An added concern would be the financial impact it would have on CAWSO, Inc. and the additional cost to Area‟s sending their delegates to conference.

When the WSBT have 5 trustee positions open there could be from 15 to 20 interviews that need to be done. The WSBT believes doing interviews at the convention, is very helpful for the WSBT and the TEC Delegates. It gives the Delegates and the Trustee‟s an opportunity to be doing their jobs as delegates and represent their areas and not just the TEC and the Trustees to do their jobs and work with their prospective Conference Committees.

Referral #6421 – TEC

In the CA World Service Manual, on Page 44, under heading “Trustee Election Committee” strike the following language from the following paragraph: “All

Trustees except the WSO Trustee, shall be elected from the Conference Approved Slate pursuant to the procedures outlined in this Manual. The WSO Trustee shall be selected from the candidates selected by the WSO

Board not already a Trustee. In order to be elected Trustee, a candidate must receive a vote of two-thirds of the Trustee Election Committee.”

RESPONSE:

The WSBT feel that substantial unanimity, as recognized by a 2/3 majority clearly outlined in the voting process of our WSM and clarified in our concepts and conference charter being in the best interests of Cocaine Anonymous.

Referral #6424 NON-ADDICT TRUSTEE

Hi. On page 43 WSM, related to trustee slates. As I read this section it references (conference approved slate) three slates only. Regional slate, non-addict trustee, WSO trustee slate. I understood that if the regional slates are allowed and passed by the conference, that takes care of approving the TAL slate and the WST slate also by that action and so, to me, having a separate TAL slate and WST slate is not necessary.

RESPONSE:

Thank you for your referral. The WST slate is provided by the Pacific South Regional assembly, this slates candidates have specific qualifications that are questioned in the TEC interview process, this is not a duplication of the Pacific South Regional Trustee candidate slate.

The TAL slate is made up only of the top two vote receivers from each of our 7 regional assemblies, which qualifies this slate to be ratified separately at the conference.

Referral #6460 WSBT Reports

The WSBT reports are, in my opinion, rambling and somewhat self-indulgent. At the end of a 6,000 mile flight funded by my area, out of tradition 7 donations, I expect the time at conference to be spent dealing with business.

Could future reports deal, in the main, with business proposed and/or transacted.

Particularly in the diabolical absence of WSBT minutes.

RESPONSE:

Thank you for your suggestion, however understanding the history of the WSBT reports is essential to knowing why there is so much information in the individual WSBT reports to the Conference floor, including transacted business, as well as the “personal” aspect of the duties, and daily interactions of each of us with the fellowship.

At one time the reports only included facts and figures. It was the opinion of the Conference floor that these types of reports were rather dry, and lacked character. The Conference floor requested to know more, to know the personal side of each Trustee in regards to their travel, and business conducted with the local and world fellowship. This touched on the loving and spiritual side of our fellowships business in the necessity to share with our fellows. Bill W. writes in his essay on Concept One:

“In other chapters great emphasis is laid on the need for a high order of personal leadership, on the desirability of careful induction methods for all incoming personnel, and upon the necessity for the best possible personal relations between those who work in our services. The concepts try to design a structure in which all may labour to good effect, with a minimum of friction. This is accomplished by so relating our servants to their work and to each other that the chances of personal conflict will be minimized.”

Bill goes on in Concept Four to describe our spiritual needs in service:

“All of us deeply desire to beL.. We want an A.A. relation of brotherly partnership. It is our shining ideal that the “spiritual corporation” of A.A. should never include any members who are regarded as “second class.”

We feel that although the concepts layout for us the relationships between our world servants and the groups in an often corporate style, Bill always tries to remind us of our individual and collective spiritual needs and our rights to

practice and apply them. Therefore the format of the current reporting to the Conference.

Armed with that information, and a willingness to take into consideration your thoughts; moving forward, we will be sure to read the full report, all the statistics, facts, and figures, as well as the “personal” aspect to Area visits, convention visits, and quarterly visits. Also keep in mind during our reports it is also an opportunity for us to thank the fellowship, and our fellow Trustees for their friendship, fellowship and service.

Regarding the minutes of the WSBT; we believe that we explained the absence of the May Quarterly minutes in the summer delegate mailing. Other than that, all minutes are current up to that date.

Referral #6639 MORE TEC DELEGATES

Increase the number of TEC Delegates – either double (or at the very least increase by 4). Regions who are not represented by a TEC elected trustee are automatically entitled to an additional delegate.

RESPONSE:

All Regions are represented by a TEC delegate and a TEC Alternate Delegate. The TEC as it stands has 7 TEC Delegates represented by each Region and a Regional Trustee, either an actual Trustee or the TAL will represent the Region without a Regional Trustee.

Referral #6640 TEC QUESTIONS

Increase the number of TEC questions and rotate each year. Also, allow each delegate and trustee to ask one question not on that year‟s list.

RESPONSE:

Each year the WSBT reviews the questions and makes changes when it is necessary. The number of questions for each position is appropriate and are

pertinent to the different Trustee positions (Regional, Trustee at Large, World Service Trustee, and World Service Office), and have been changed over the years. During the interview process, each member of the Trustee Election Committee takes a turn asking a question, as it goes around the room. Each candidate is asked the nearly same questions depending on their duties. This allows for uniformity and fairness.

Regarding your suggestion, we will consider it; each member of the committee asking one question that is not on the pre prepared interview questionnaire. We will research the best way to allow this with fairness to each candidate.

Referral #6641 VOTE ABSTENTION

Rescind the motion that an abstention in a TEC vote equals a no vote. Restore the right of “abstaining” under concepts 3 & 4.

RESPONSE:

We are aware of the action that took place in 2008 regarding the motion presented by the WSBT to the conference floor. We support the conference floor decision expressed through the group conscious. Additionally, moving forward we support the current World Service Manual that states, “2) All voting will be done by secret ballot. TEC members have the choice of either voting for one candidate or voting for none of the candidates. Abstentions will not be considered a vote, and the election will be affirmed by two thirds of the voting members.

9) FOURTH BALLOT: If no candidate receives 2/3 vote on the first three (3) ballots, the top vote receiving candidate is put up for 2/3 ratification vote. For ratification purposes, TEC members have the choice of either voting “yes” or “no”; abstentions will not be considered a vote . If that candidate receives the required 2/3 vote of voting members, then that person is the elected Trustee. If

not, the same procedure will take place with the 2nd top vote-receiving candidate,”

Referral #6648 TRUSTEE QUALIFICATIONS

On Pg 42 of the WSM; under the heading qualifications, #4

Referral #6657 TRUSTEE CLEAN TIME QUALIFICATIONS

To reconsider qualification #4 of the Addict Trustee as setout on page 42 of WSM. Is 8 years clean time the “right” number?

RESPONSE: #6648 #6657

An important qualification of an addict trustee is #6. “Has to have served as a voting member or committee chair at a WSC.” A trustee candidate‟s prior experience at the WSC is a foundation that would be critical in understanding the workings of and process of serving as a trustee. Allowing a voting member of a WSC to serve the four year term that most delegates are elected to assists the individual in gaining that experience. As the suggested sobriety requirement for the delegate position is four years, the extension of a four year delegate term seemed to logically set the sobriety requirement for a trustee candidate at eight years.

Our experience has taught us that it may not take all four years as a voting member to gain the necessary experience and understanding sought to be considered a qualified trustee candidate. As the sobriety requirement for a delegate is a “suggested” one, the WSBT has placed a referral into the S&B Committee to add the word “suggested” to qualification #4 “A suggested minimum of eight years . . .”

The WSBT strongly believes that fulfilling the term of a delegate is very important, so the existing sobriety requirement for a trustee candidate of eight

years does have merit and should not be overlooked. It‟s the addition of the word “suggested” that would give the area/region the flexibility to make the decision of who best would represent their region on the slate. This would provide consistency with the initial process of electing a delegate and provide the region the flexibility to bring forward a trustee candidate on their slate qualified on their true experience and qualifications.

Referral #6677 HOW IT WORKS

Bring forth a motion to the floor to accept the actions taken by the trustee‟s on the “How it Works” issue.

RESPONSE:

Based on the “labor of love” to research, and investigate the situation regarding the “How it Works” issue, the WSBT put forth their position: “It is the position of the World Service Board of Trustees that the CA version of “How it Works” is not considered CA approved literature. In the spirit of unity, our common welfare, and our observance of the Twelve Traditions, we suggest that your group have a business meeting to determine the well informed group conscience as to what readings shall be used in your meeting formats. 12/05/2009” Acting in accordance with the CAW.S. Conference Charter, and the Bylaws of CAW.S. Inc., the WSBT took this position with the best interest of CA in mind, and provided numerous pieces of documentation pertaining to our position to the members in attendance at the 2009 Conference, as well as inclusions in the delegate mailings, and articles in the Newsgram supporting our decision. We continue to stand behind our position, answer all questions pertaining to it, and provided additional information as it becomes available. We do not see the need to have any additional actions regarding this position.

Please add back as the final step in the TEC process to add a God Bowl. *Please note that if the TEC have gone through each step and cannot choose a trustee – then the last 2 names would be placed in a bowl and one chosen. This would ensure no trustee position would go vacant.

RESPONSE:

After much discussion we the WSBT referred this referral to Structure and Bylaws.

Referral #6707 LARGER BOARD

The office board should be expanded to include more members. Perhaps two more positions would be appropriate. One could/should go to a Canadian member and one should/could be for a European member. They could attend via Skype, etc.

RESPONSE:

There is nothing prohibiting anyone, anywhere from applying for a position at the CAWSO. Currently, there are four positions open at CAWSO for Directors at Large. On page 53 of the WSM (online versions) are the positions and breakdown structure. If you know of someone interested, please have them apply to the World Service Office. The interview process is on page 54 of the World Service Manual.

Referral #6132 – TEC REFORM

The time for TEC reform has come. My experience as an ex-delegate and TEC member together with strong views expressed in my Area lead me to believe this issue can no L.er be side-stepped or buried by the Trustees. I made a referral last year but heard nothing.

RESPONSE:

We understand that you may have some concerns regarding the TEC process. We can assure you that the WSBT has not side-stepped or buried the concerns

of the Fellowship, Conference or members regarding the TEC process. We have addressed several referrals on topic of TEC in this report; as well as addressing many situations following last year‟s election process. We have made internal changes to the process based on the experience of those members on the 2010 Trustee Election Committee. We continue to encourage you to bring any suggestions to the attention of the Conference by submitting referrals.

This referral was originally sent to Structure and Bylaws, we cannot speak as to why it was not addressed by them. As a Board we continue to support the guidelines for the Trustee elections as outlined in our CA World Service Manual.

Referral #6672 – TEC GUIDELINE

Refine and clarify guidelines for Trustee Election.

RESPONSE:

Currently we support the guidelines for trustee election as outlined in the CA World Service Manual. We encourage members of the fellowship and Conference to submit referrals to Structure and Bylaws with suggestions as how to refine and clarify the guidelines.

Referral #6633 STICKERING

Instead of stickering the whole page “How it Works” I consider put a disclaimer sticker on front page to address this rather than defacing the book.

RESPONSE:

With appreciation for this thought, a „disclaimer‟ sticker could create legal and public controversy, whereas covering the print shows our intent of respecting international copyright laws. We believe it is best to continue using stickers to cover the text on the books being shipped internationally.

Referral #6681 ANONYMITY/ADVERTISING

Our Regional Office is located on a very busy street; we have been using the street windows to advertise for CA (logo, helpline numbers…)

But we have encountered resistance amongst members about anonymity, promotion and so forth…Do we have a guideline on that matter?

RESPONSE

Thank you for your communication regarding „Anonymity and Advertising‟. This is a wonderful topic and one that continues to allow us all to explore our traditions concerning „promotion and anonymity‟.

Cocaine Anonymous has but one primary purpose, „to carry the message to the addict that still suffers‟, and we have tried various ways of raising awareness including advertising with the use of approved posters.

Many Groups, Districts and Areas set up Public Information Committees to carry out such work as community advertising. CAWS Conference has a Public Information Committee who has compiled guidelines on how to safely go about this very important area of carrying the message. These guidelines have grown from hard won experience of local PI Committees and they are made available to our fellowship through our website www.ca.org.

Referral # 6204 How it Works?

Is “How it Works” still a CA approved piece of literature.

RESPONSE:

AA has requested that we phase the “modified” version of “How it Works”, (the CA version) out of our literature, and they also expressed to us how important it was for them to preserve A.A.‟s purity of message. As a fellowship (AA), they have a desire to help other fellowships, but they must look after their own house first. They have encouraged us to use our own literature.

It is the position of the World Service Board of Trustees that the CA version of “How it Works” is not considered CA approved literature. In the spirit of unity, our common welfare, and our observance of the Twelve Traditions, we suggest that your group have a business meeting to determine the well informed group conscience as to what readings shall be used in your meeting formats. 12/05/2009. The WSBT also outlined our position in the following Newsgram articles, published in 2009 (see below). We hope that reading these articles will be helpful in answering your question.

“How It Works”

Th World Service Board of Trustee’s would like to thank the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous for allowing us to serve. We are always mindful of our role, and strive to fulfill it to the best of our ability. We have had some trying times over the last year and a half dealing with one issue in particular, the use of “How It Works”.

It started at the World Service Conference in 2008. The Literature, Chips, & Format committee brought forth a motion to change some language in the CA version of “How It Works”. This brought up the question as to whether we had permission to use the reading in an altered state. At the time, we were told that we did in fact have permission, in writing, to alter and adapt “How It Works” as we saw fit. In our due diligence, we asked to locate and have ready on file the permission in question. After many hours spend searching the World service Office, members own personal archives, and anywhere else we could think of, we simply could not locate any document granting us permission to alter “How It Works”.

The WSBT, at that point, set out an action plan to deal with the matter. We stopped the sale and distribution of any literature containing any altered AA readings. We expanded our search for any documentation granting us permission to use any material borrowed from AAWS. As well, a meeting was set up between Cocaine Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. The meeting took place in New York City on September 17, 2009. It was attended by three members of AA’s World Service Structure, as well as Trevor S. (WSBT Chair), Robert L. (Atlantic North Regional Trustee) and Tom P. (WSOB Chair).

The agenda of the meeting consisted of an overview of our history as a fellowship, and the progression of using AA literature. We put forth the CA fellowships desire to continue to use “How It Works” in its altered state. We left the meeting with their thanks for coming forward, and having the matter decided at their next board meeting, which took place that weekend.

The decision we got back was not what the fellowship was hoping for. AA had asked that we not use any readings in an altered format, and went further to suggest that we use our own literature in the future. They did grant us permission to use “How It Works” in its original form, aL. with a disclaimer regarding non-affiliation.

It was at this point that the WSBT were forwarded a copy of a letter sent from AAWS to a member of CA. It was dated back November 29, 1990. It granted us permission not only to use, but adapt to use “How It Works”. The letter also contained an AA supplied disclaimer we were to use as a condition of consent. The WSBT had some questions regarding the source of the document, and started to investigate. We have attempted to locate the original document, to no avail. As part of our search, we have sent the document to AAWS to see if they

have any record of it being sent. As of Friday March 26, 2010, we have yet to hear back from AA regarding their findings. They were however, doubtful of the success of such a search.

The WSBT has issued the following opinion:

Update as of December 5, 2009: It is the position of the World Service Board of Trustees that the CA version of How it Works is not considered CA-approved literature. In the spirit of unity, our common welfare, and our observance of the Twelve Traditions, we suggest that your group have a business meeting to determine the well-informed group conscience as to what readings shall be used in your meeting formats.

As a board, the Trustees have explored every avenue available to us. We have worked many L. hours on this issue. We are of the opinion that the matter is now concluded. If in the future something new comes to light, we are always able to reopen the discussion. We feel, however, satisfied that a loving Higher Power who guides us all has spoken, and that any more time spent pursuing this is not in the best interest of Cocaine Anonymous.

A.A.‟s “How It Works” and Cocaine Anonymous

It has been a L. standing tradition in CA to read “How It Works” at meetings, conventions and events. Many of us grew up with it, so to speak, and feel a great devotion and love for the fellowship of A.A. We owe a great debt to them for showing us the way, and allowing us to learn from them. It can truly be said that without A.A., we as a Fellowship would not be where we are today.

Over the years, as part of our growth, C.A has borrowed and adapted several readings from A.A. The 12 Steps and 12 Traditions have been gifted to all fellowships, to alter as needed. The only thing A.A. has asked of any 12 Step Fellowship was to give the credit to them for the original version. “The Promises”, “A Vision for You”, and select other readings have been borrowed as well. Almost always, we use them in their original format, completely unaltered. The exception has been “How It Works”.

As L. as most of us have been around, the CA version of “How It Works” included the word “cocaine” instead of “alcohol”, as well as the alteration of the “3 pertinent ideas”. Somewhere aL. the way, we in CA thought that we had been granted permission to do so. Some old-timers assured us that verbal permission was granted, while others were sure that a written copy of such permission was out there somewhere. Events set in motion at the 2008 World Service Conference led the World Service Board of Trustees (WSBT) down a path to find a copy of this permission. After many hours spent diligently searching in every location we could think of, including the World Service Office (WSO), several past trustees’ files, and other L. standing member’s personal archives, the WSBT had to face the facts that we did not have any record of A.A. granting us the rights to alter any readings.

The question became what we could do to make right the situation we found ourselves in. The WSBT approved motions to address the situation. The first motion was to cease publication and distribution of any material and or literature containing “How It Works” in any medium. The second was to have the Trustee At Large investigate as to whether or not we have permission to re-print with redistribution (all media) of other AA literature/phrases…i.e.: “The Promises”, and “A Vision for You”. The next was to have the WSO set up a meeting, face to face, with AA to address the problem and ways to solve it, make amends, ask

forgiveness, and how we can make further restitution. A record of the meeting via minutes should be distributed to the World Service Office Board and World Service Board of Trustees. The meeting will include the local Regional Trustee. This meeting has now taken place, and we have received an answer from Alcoholics Anonymous.

The WSBT would like to thank Alcoholics Anonymous for their graciousness in these matters. They were happy to meet with us, and discuss the situation. The meeting was attended by John K. – A.A. WSB Chair, Valerie O. – A.A. Publications Director, Phyllis H. – A.A. General Manager, Tom P. – CA WSOB Chair, Trevor S. – CAWSBT Chair & PNR Trustee, and Robert L. – CA ANR Trustee. The entire matter was discussed at length, and much was said regarding the spiritual aspect behind what we as a fellowship were trying to accomplish. Our desire to do the right thing was acknowledged, and appreciated.

During the meeting, it was expressed to us how important it was for them to preserve A.A.’s purity of message. As a fellowship, they have a desire to help other fellowships, but they must look after their own house first, as do we. As a result, we have now received written permission to continue to use all our current readings borrowed from A.A. They have asked, however, that we use them as originally written, unaltered in any way and that we include a disclaimer supplied by them as well.

One of the other topics was our current inventory of HFC II. With, appreciation of our request to this fellowship, Alcoholics Anonymous has approved our selling the remaining inventory of HFC II in the United States. We have a large quantity of books, approximately $45,000.00 worth of inventory, and every copy contains the altered version of “How It Works”. During the meeting, we discussed ways to liquidate the supply, without undo financial hardship on the fellowship of Cocaine

Anonymous. There were some ideas, but none that seemed entirely feasible. We are eternally grateful to AA for the program of recovery and their willingness to help us work towards a solution to this situation. Books are now going back out to the fellowship, and the message continues to be carried via this important tool. Unfortunately, out of respect for their wishes, future printings of HFC II will not contain “How It Works” in the altered format, if at all.

The WSBT started working on informing the fellowship of the outcome of this process. It was at this point, however, that a newly presented letter, addressed to a L. term member, and dated November 29, 1990, was brought to our attention. We wish to assure the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous that we will diligently pursue further the impact this document may have on the process.

As the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous moves forward, we will realize that this outcome only helps us in our growth. Developing new readings, books, and other materials will strengthen us, and provide tools we can use to carry the CA message. We will never forget where we came from, and just how important A.A. and the “Big Book” have been to our development, but honoring them and their decision regarding “How It Works” will show how much we as a fellowship have grown.

The WSBT believes that a content approval process/point is necessary and would better represent a group conscience of our fellowship as to ensure the content represents the concept approved in point 4. This could be done by modifying point 11 of the process as follows:

Point 11 (as is): The approved draft is reviewed by the World Service Board of Trustees (WSBT) to ensure that there are no Tradition violations or other concerns that might affect Cocaine Anonymous as a whole. If approved by the WSBT, the book moves to Point 12. If the WSBT finds problems with the draft, it will provide a list of specific recommendations and the book returns to Point 9. The WSBT review process should take less than ninety (90) days to complete. Suggested Modifications:

Point 11: The approved draft is reviewed by a “Book Review Panel” – inclusive of the World Service Board of Trustees (WSBT) and two delegates from each region – to ensure that the content of the book represents the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous and the concept approved by the WSC in point 3. I believe that the way in which “Hope” is written in Russian on the convention t-shirts and the chips is incorrect. The character “bi” is not a letter. Rather it is a modifier to the preceding letter. It is not written is the same size as the entire word. Rather it is written smaller than the word and is written post-script. If I am correct, please fix for future printing.

Thank you for your referral and for highlighting this issue. The Russian translation (Hope, Faith, Courage) was sent by members in St Petersburg directly to a WS Convention Committee who liaised with the Russian members

Since bringing this to our attention we have again contacted the group members in Russia and asked them to confirm if any changes are required. We are aware that languages that utilize modifiers and umlauts for example have relaxed their requirements for perfect translations as most programs for such translations do not allow for the very specific nature of those.

This effort was with a sincere desire to demonstrate our worldwide fellowship and we hope that the spirit of these actions are noted. On any feedback from the members in St Petersburg that request changes will be noted and necessary action taken for future projects.

At Conference Report.

I continue to be grateful to the WSBT and the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous for giving me the opportunity to serve as your World Service Office Trustee. I have attended all of the WSOB board meetings during this last year. I have also attended most of the WSBT Quarterly meetings. Unfortunately I missed the May quarterly as well as the CAWS Convention in Phoenix AZ due to my mother‟s illness. I would like to thank all those that supported me during that time.

I have been very busy communicating issues, motions and policy changes between the WSOB board and the WSBT board. I have participated in all the teleconference meetings of the WSBT, as well as the conference calls for the LCF, Finance, and PI subcommittees for the conference.

With my first year as the World Service Trustee coming to a close, I would like to express my gratitude to the Fellowship for letting me be of service. It has been a very satisfying and educational year and I would also like to thank my fellow Trustees for helping and guiding me through my rookie year.

In this past year I have attended all the WSBT Quarterly meetings and have been on all WSBT conference calls. I have attended all but one WSOB meetings in L. Beach and attended the World Service Convention in Arizona which was an awesome experience for me. After sitting on the Conference Convention Committee as a Delegate for two years, it was exciting to see all the hard work done by the Committee come to fruition. I am honored to sit as the lead Trustee on the Convention Committee this year and, hopefully, for the next three years.

I am also the lead Trustee of the Trustee Negotiating Committee and have participated in several contracts negotiations. I have signed a contract with the Four Point Sheraton to hold our Conference here through 2014. I would also like to note that the major part of the Four Points negotiations was done by Jay Finesilver who did a fantastic job in getting us the best deal possible. I just reviewed the contract and signed it. Thank you Jay.

I sit on the WSC Conference Committee and have been part of the monthly conference calls. The Committee does a great job and that‟s why this Conference is always a big success. A big thank you to the Committee.

Another of my responsibilities has been to review our trademark and copyright licenses. After being in contact with our trademark attorney, he has sent me all the paperwork showing that all of our intellectual properties, i.e. logos, names, initials and phrases are current and up to date here in the USA, Canada and Europe.

Experience, Strength and Hope:

As a rookie Trustee I‟ve found the experience „interesting‟ and have access to loving mentors who teach me and critics from whom I learn differing lessons.

The European Region is a dynamic and enthusiastic Region of Cocaine Anonymous and without doubt it‟s the front line of growth as we observe our 5^th tradition on a worldwide scale.

Projects I‟m currently working on include reviewing challenges with regards Literature Fulfillment to Groups/Districts/Areas overseas and exploring the feasibility of a European „hub‟ to supply our stock inventory without high shipping costs and lengthy waiting times. This particular project is in early review, collating current costs and exploring possible savings if there are any. Cost savings are of course not the only benefit being explored.

Translation of literature is also a task I‟ve had the honor to take part in, acting as a liaison between the WSOB Translation Committee and local Areas in the Region. This particular work has been rewarding in seeing a L. process bear fruit.

Credit where credit is due, thanks to the WSOB and the local Area Translation Committees for their ongoing hard work.

With the upcoming CAWS 2012 Convention in sight, I‟ve tried to support the committee as they deal with healthy challenges involved in hosting the first convention outside the USA and Canada.

Working with CAWSO staff has been great, and I‟ve been blessed to see our, your, WSO reaching out and getting into action when a call for help comes from new members in Europe. An example of recent activity, within 2 hours of receiving emails asking for help the office contacted me and passed on contact details of members in Italy and Switzerland and we made contact with a telephone call and follow-up emails…that same evening the new member in Switzerland was in contact with CA group members only a few hours up the road. Starter kits being sent out…thus we grow.

I‟ve stayed in regular contact with members from new groups around the world, Russia, Northern Spain, Luxemburg and Rome to name a few.

I worked with Delegates from Areas within the Region and the WSOB to revisit royalty agreements. Another wonderful opportunity to witness both the Areas taking responsibility around supporting themselves and the WSOB working so supportively and understanding to the specific needs of Areas.

I‟ve sat on the Conference H&I Committee this first year, a wonderfully enthused and happy bunch. I‟d like to thank the stalwarts on the committee who kept momentum throughout the year with monthly conference calls and email activity.

In June I travelled to visit our fellowship in Iran, I spent 6 days with members as they enthusiastically worked to establish CA in Iran. It was a real „vision for you‟

experience. With such differing social/community traditions I was in awe of the Hope, Faith and Courage these members demonstrated. They shared their gratitude of being part of Cocaine Anonymous with actions that I know would inspire you all, We drove into the mountains above Karaj and I participated in a H&I panel, we drove for miles down a dirt track to a small village and after some PI work held the first CA H&I meeting at a detox there and CA got asked to go back on a weekly basis which they have been doing since. In that detox I heard Farsi translations of our readings, I saw newcomer chips/keyrings being given to suffering addicts in need…I saw CA offer hope and a solution to these addicts, these broken newcomers that are our lifeblood, our principle purpose for being.

We held workshops every day, well attended with great interaction. Book studies, participation meetings, Traditions discussions, Public Information, H&I, how to start a meeting, translations, how to form an ASC. Seemingly random at times the topics were all focused on one thing…‟how can we share what has been so freely given to us‟.

I share these experiences with you all with immense love and gratitude. As I sat to start writing this report I had intended to write a „formal business‟ opening report with no fluffy stuff or back patting, I probably haven‟t succeeded. What I hope I have shared with you is our effectiveness as a fellowship, our ability to reach out, and the evidence that Cocaine Anonymous IS a worldwide fellowship and regardless of where you are from or what language you speak CA does reach out and is available.

I‟m asked in the last 3 steps to „continue, improve, try and practice‟, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to do so with you all. ILAS

My gratitude list is way too L. but, I thank God for blessing me with the ability to serve the fellowship of CA I thank the members of the Conference previous and current for their devotion. I‟d like to thank the delegates for the exceptional work they do. Thank you World Service Office (WSO) for keeping the key in the ignition. Lastly, thank you Trustees for the love and guidance you‟ve shown.

In my first year, I was hoping to the change the world of recovering addicts. Well, what actually happened is, recovering addicts changed me. The last year has been one of the most challenging of my life emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. In contrast, it has been one of the most rewarding. This commitment has been nothing I anticipated and much more than imagined.

I served on the Information Technology Conference Committee (Lead Trustee) and the Structure & Bylaws World Service Conference Committee. I served on the Finance, Legal (Lead Trustee), Orientation, and L. Term Planning Subcommittees of the World Service Board of Trustees (WSBT). I have made and received many phone calls from Members, Delegates, and fellow Trustees in an effort to get requested answers and solution to questions and issues. I have participated in all online business and quarterly meeting.

I visited the Florida Area quarterly meeting (January 2011) in Pensacola, FL. It was my first visit as a Trustee. The drive was eight hours each way, but well worth it. The understanding of adhering to Traditions and “trusting the process” has improved the area. My hat is off to the Florida Area for their brand of

willingness & hospitality. Recognition is in order for the Florida area in hosting CAWS 2013. The convention is to be held at very nice resort property on the Atlantic Ocean. Get ready for a beach party in 2013 @ Ft. Lauderdale Beach… “Woo Whoo!”…

I had the opportunity to be a part of the Atlantic South Regional Convention 2011 “Yes We‟ CAn Recover” hosted in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Area showcased a lovely convention with a variety of events, speakers, and workshops. I attended and participated in the 27^th Annual CAWS Convention 2011 “WE” in Phoenix Arizona; the Quarterly and Convention rocked my core. I just returned from the Arkansas Area convention “Gratitude in Action” (August 19^{th –} 21^st). The Little Rock Area is strong in carrying the message. What do “Escaping the Madness”, Spirituality”, and a Recovering Comedian equal to? It equals a full course weekend of CA recovery in the Natural State. An area of opportunity existing in Natchez Mississippi: I have been in contact with Steve; it‟s significant because the area has been out of service for several years.

By far, my hardest challenge has been moving forward without my best friend. As some of you know, my Mother passed away while I was in Conference last year. This fellowship gave her the son she always wanted. She and I will be eternally grateful for that. Again, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve and grow as a trusted servant for such a wonderful fellowship.

Overview:

First and foremost I need to thank God and the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous for the opportunity to be of service.

I really thought I had an idea of what I was getting into and truth be told I was surprised and overwhelmed at times. Starting with the Orientation call I have been real busy and have no idea where this first year has gone.

The Pacific North Region has some of the best people and fellowship I have been a part of. The fellowship and their willing to host me and take care of some of my needs make me real grateful. Because of this I have been able to be real active and visible to the Region. With all the help I was able to be under budget for the year and I cannot thank people enough for their support.

Being at many Assemblies in my recovery my first as the Pacific North Regional Trustee was made a lot easier with Trevor acting as the secretary and offering his experience and guidance throughout the year when I asked.

The Pacific North Region is experiencing some struggles with growth and commitment. I am pleased to see unity between Areas and their willingness to help one another.

Also, I need to thank my fellow WSBT members for the love and patience in my first year. Randy my trustee buddy for just spending time listening to me and reminding me there is a delete button.

Kim, Thanks for everything. Herding cats is not an easy job. Thanks for all your help not only working for the fellowship but your compassion, love and understanding for each and every one of us.

Once again I am thankful to the Fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous for allowing me to the opportunity to be of service as the Atlantic North Regional Trustee. And I am grateful to my higher power for giving me this gift of recovery through the 12 step recovery process. I also extend thanks to all those who are providing service to their fellow addicts, especially those here in the Atlantic North Region. It is a very humbling to receive the trust and support of the Fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous in this area of service. It has been a very busy year as a member of the WSBT. I have participated in all quarterly meetings, conference calls, online business of the WSBT, as well as the board to board meetings with the WSOB. I have also assisted with the numerous responses to questions from the fellowship to the WSBT. This past year I have served on the Conference Public Information Committee.

During the past year I attended the Quebec area Convention/Regional Assembly in Jan. I have also attended Area functions in the WDC/Maryland/N. Virginia Area, Northern New England Area, RI Area, and Ma Area. I also visited numerous meetings in the ANR and am planning on visiting more Areas in the coming year; I do plan on traveling to the Canadian Maritimes Area which I do not believe has ever had a trustee visit that area.

Pacific South Regional Trustee Conference Report

Overview

Well, I am coming to the end of my third year as a Trustee. The last three years have been both challenging and rewarding.

The Pacific South Region had its “Unity Day” at the beach which was again a HUGE success. Thank you Central California for hosting this great event. The fellowship came out in full force, even Las Vegas drove down to be a part of. The speaker was great and the fellowship was amazing. We had great food and fellowship. Thank you to all the Delegates for putting in the time to make it such a huge success. I am very proud of you all. The Pacific South Region is gearing up to host the CAWS 2014 World Convention. We have put in place our Steering committee and are now accepting resumes for the general committee. L. Beach HERE WE COME!!!!

Most inspiring this year is seeing all the new meetings pop up within the Pacific South Region, especially the new meetings in the Inland Empire and of course the new meetings in Las Vegas. Please keep helping the addict who still suffers, start a new meeting!!! Starter kits are available through the World Service Office, and in your local districts and areas.

I received a call from Mexico City a few months ago; a member from there who had received a starter kit was very excited about starting meeting there. I instructed him to contact the World Service Office about literature in Spanish. We talked for about an hour and the part I loved the most about our conversation was the excitement in his voice about CA and that he was going to get to be a part of starting meetings there and being of service to others. And thus We Grow!!!!

My region‟s 7^th Tradition donations totaled less than $15,000.00 this past year. The 7^th Tradition across the World has been down and we need to be mindful of the support the World Service Office needs to keep the doors open. Please don‟t forget to send your 7^th Tradition to World, even if you send 7^th Tradition to your respective Areas.

I want to thank my Trustee Buddy Kim for all her help. She is rolling off this year and I will miss her a lot, as my roommate at all the events we participate in and my ear piece with questions and support on how to handle all the situations we as Trustees have to deal with. Kim, thank you for your help, support and love. Of course once again, I have to thank my spouse Barbara, for her love, support and for allowing me to be of service to this great fellowship and for being at conference on her birthday once again. One more year BABY!!!!

Synopsis:

At the close of conference 2010 the WSBT had 5 new trustees, new thoughts, experiences and personalities, like any group coming together for service to our

fellowship, we had to and have found our way, a collective effort has produced results for our fellowship.

Phoenix‟s hosting of our World Convention was a WE of a time an event that truly promoted unity, enthusiasm for our fellowship and was a successful fundraiser.

Our 2012 World Convention in Birmingham, England is looking to be a GREAT event and has already been generating tremendous enthusiasm throughout our fellowship, truly worldwide.

In writing this report, reflecting on this last year of service, I am humbled with gratitude for those that came before us and those who walk with us today. Last year we lost a member and one of my mentors and dear friend Bobbi Harmon former Trustee at Large, her service dedication and voice remain a L.l to strive for in achievements and serve as a guide to remain grateful to you all.

Overview:

Three down and one to go! The Trustee experience often includes both extreme emotions of worth and frustration. But the underlying thread of knowing these doors of recovery are still open for the next addict continues to bring energy to the effort. I remain honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve this fellowship as a Trustee.

The Southwest Region hosts some of the largest and mature Areas in our fellowship and some of the smallest and newest Areas as well. L.raging that experience with the issues of growing our smaller Areas is one of the most important challenges our Region faces. The SWRegion yahoo group has been a wonderful tool to assist us in communicating with each other.

The Southwest Regional Convention and Assembly were in Denver and it was a great introduction to the folks from our Region. Colorado always does a great job of hosting the Region and put together a fantastic event.

In the fiscal year, I attended an event in Wichita Kansas, Celebrate Around the World event in San Antonio and the New Mexico Area Convention in Albuquerque. Mindful of the budgets and expenses for our fellowship, I am maintaining a schedule that will permit me to visit all of the areas inside my term as Trustee and under budget.

Arizona hosted CAWS2011 and was a beautiful result of hard work, God‟s presence and an outpouring of fellowship participation. Those three things are always a perfect recipe for a fantastic weekend celebrating the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous.

As Vice Chair of the WSBT, I was introduced to daunting task we ask of our trusted servants at the Chair level. Just assisting Kim throughout the year as little as she needed, with the business of CA and the WSBT, opened my eyes to all of the hard work, effort and energy that goes into the role of Chair.

I want to personally thank Kim for her dedication, direction and never ending effort that she put forth for our board over the past year. With a large number of new Trustees, the amount of correspondence and business produced, the intensity of many of the issues tackled – she kept us on track, focused and productive – no small chore I can assure you. She has set the bar high – deserves our utmost appreciation and will be forever remembered by me personally as the true “herder of the cats”.

In closing – with every passing year, it is more and more apparent to me that the future of Cocaine Anonymous is dependent on the daily actions that each of us as representatives of our areas and regions put forth. That all of the efforts at a Conference, though critical to the maintenance of our fellowship, our business and our structure, fall silent to the night – if we go home and hope that someone else does the real work for us. It is with that in mind that I continue to go forward in the efforts and role of the Southwest Trustee, but never losing sight that being present, available and willing to help the newcomer find their recovery is the only real goal for all of us. The future is bright for Cocaine Anonymous and I feel blessed to be a part of that today.

Final Report:

Welcome to Cocaine Anonymous!!!

What a wild ride this has been! The last ten years of my service-ship have been awesome, especially the last four! A full account of my activities as the Midwest Regional Trustee, and as the WSBT Chair are at the end of this report:

I want to thank the Midwest Region for their 7^th traditions contributions of over $12,000.00 this past year. We look forward to further contributions in the coming year. As we all face challenging financial times, so does this fellowship. We are grateful to all of those who were able to support the CAWS 2011 World Service Convention. The net gain from that fundraiser is going to help us tremendously, but we need to continue our financial support through 7^th Tradition contributions, purchases of CA literature, and registering for the CAWS 2012 Convention!!! Our continued efforts in this manner will insure that the doors will always remain open for the addict who still suffers.

During this past year I have had some wonderful visits:

• Manitoba Area –Greater Canadian Convention/July ‟10
• Colorado Area–SWR Convention/October „10
• Ohio Area – MWR Convention-Assembly/October „10

The Ohio Area did an awesome job combining the Assembly and Convention. This Region has only just begun the combining of these two events. Ohio did a great job! I always love participating in the local regional conventions, it is wonderful to see so many people that I have served with over the years.

• Missouri Area – Kansas City Group Inventory/November „10

Much thanks to The Missouri Area, and especially Ellen U. Her hospitality assisted in keeping the costs down for this particular trip. In addition to the group inventory at their Area meeting, I attended two wonderful meetings there as well.

• Illinois Area – Illinois Area Unity Convention/February „11.
• Michigan Area – Tri State Convention-April „11

One of the best trips of the year… I met with members of the Ohio Area to talk about the spirit of rotation, and the importance of the World Service Manual. I met with Randy from Indiana, the webmaster in that Area. He and I reviewed the website, and got it approved for “linking to CA.org. Lastly I had several conversations with the Michigan Area Chair person, Johnnie. All of the chats were great, and very valuable to the continued attempt to have an open line of communication between myself and these Areas. The committee did a great job on the convention, and the speakers were awesome.

I love the “middle”! Their warm hospitality over the years is very much appreciated. I am fortunate to have visited all the Areas in my Region with the exception of Kentucky. We had a visit all lined up but when the rotation of the Area meeting/event changed just this last quarter, I was unable to make the journey. It has been an honor and a privilege to service with the fellowship of CA in the Midwest. There are three awesome candidates on the MWR slate, and I am very excited for one of them to have this same wonderful experience to serve the fellowship that we all love, and of course I will encourage them to visit Kentucky!

This past year it was a pleasure to have worked with the Archives Conference Committee. This committee witnessed the “roll-out” of the first in a series of Commemorative Chips. In Phoenix we assembled 1000 Archives Commemorative Chip “packets”, 300 which consist of chip/chain inserted into a protective plastic, and the rest assembled with the chain attached. We were

successful in getting all of them ready for sale at Monday morning “bazaar” during the Convention. Additionally, the committee was very excited to see the “first off the press” chip made available for the „live auction” at the banquet dinner raising $1200.00 for CA. Watch for the next series of these chips to roll out in the future. This committee has a passion and desire to “archive” CA‟s history, and make it available to the fellowship to see. The projects this they foresees take people power, and yes, money!!! Please consider being a part of this committee, and be in “awe” of the history of our fellowship.

Also during this year I remained active on the Conference Committee. This Committee continues to “do what they do”…and that is to put on the best Conference for this fellowship. They are committed to the ever evolving needs of the attending members and the technologies that can assist us. Remaining items on their agenda are “reg-online”, and “referrals on-line.” Each of these items when rolled out will make this event more effective and efficient.

My membership in this program has provided me endless opportunities to grow and change; the service work has been an enormous part of that, as well as the people. As a delegate and as a trustee I have had the opportunity to meet so many people from so many places, worldwide. A special thank you to: Scott Stevenson, Spencer Barton, John B., members of the “middle” – Steve Banks., Johnnie Mae, Jeannette, the Denmark‟s, Ellen U., Daphne R., my sponsor, Cynthia, and the gal pals; Susan, Robin, and Lori.

I would like to take a moment to give special recognition to some amazing people I have worked with over the years…

Unlikely pairing…Carl W. and myself. He was my “trustee buddy”. Thank you Carl for always being there for me; enduring the complaints, the tears, and the

laughter. Thank you for helping when I asked, and keeping me from making mistakes that first year.

Bobbie H., my first year roommate… She shared her experience, strength and wisdom with me. Although we often were on opposite sides of discussion, I will always remember her in a special way. Her smile and quick wit will remain in my heart and mind always. I know she is watching us now.

Earl, thank you for everything; your fellowship, and friendship. You taught me so much; you were a calming and encouraging factor during difficult times. I miss your chocolate chip cookies at the Quarterlies!!!

Tony, I appreciate you being on this journey with me. Thank you for your wisdom, tolerance, and unconditional love.

Brian, thank you for always being there to listen. I appreciate your support through this crazy and amazing adventure.

My first year, and especially the next two were filled with excitement, challenges, and changes; change at the WSO, How it Works, more changes at the WSO, How it Works, and We Can Recover, stickers, no stickers, and the amazing growing fellowship worldwide…Iran, now that is AMAZING!!! During the first years, much thanks to Bruce, Hayward, Willie, Trevor, Nicholas, and Lawrence for filling those times with guidance and support. Robert, Joy, Randy, and Richard…you also were apart of those “challenging, changing, interesting, and exciting” years, and you will always be very special to me. I appreciate the compassion, dedication, and passion each of you has for your service work and for this fellowship. Joy, my “little buddy”, it has been a pleasure serving with you, and sharing this experience, I will miss you.

This year, as previous years has been everything I thought it would be, and nothing that I expected. The Board as well as our fellowship welcomed the new Trustees: Russell, Terry, Peter, Kenny, and Richard L.; my wish for the five of you is that you experience the wonderment, enjoyment, and true love for what we were elected to do. Keep the faith, keep the course and above all trust those you serve with.

Much thanks to the members of the WSOB throughout the years. Thank you for all that you do for the fellowship of CA. Special thanks to Shelia and Andrew! My best of wishes for Linda as she continues her journey. Tom, thank you for your service, and I wish you all the best on your journey as well.

A final special acknowledgment to “ying and yang”…Randy and Richard. I truly appreciate your friendship, support, and love during the last three years and throughout this year especially. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the laughter, your unwavering validation, and the reminders that there is a “delete” bottom on my keyboard!!! I love you both very much.

So…with that…please indulge me with my final words:

I have absolutely loved being a Trustee and truly appreciate every opportunity that it has brought to me. I believe that ultimately God speaks through each and every one of us and solutions to our dilemmas will be brought forward regarding OUR concerns. Patience and tolerance are required. With honesty, open mindedness, and willingness, there will be positive growth within CA. We are trusted servants driven by God‟s will; we all love CA. As we to continue to review our motives and intentions pertaining to our thoughts and actions we can and will move forward. We must continue to educate those that cross our path about this program of recovery; teach them about the Traditions, the Concepts, and our Bylaws. Teach them about “who we are.” The Big Book may be our basic tool,

but our manual easily can and should be the basic spiritual game plan/guideline to our simple existence.

Our participation, the WSBT, and all of us at the Conference is noted in both of our books “Hope, Faith, and Courage, and HFC volume II”, “it …represents to us, and to those present, the spiritual connection and acceptance of what was, and what could be in the future.” A loving and caring God will reveal himself through mutual trust and faith of one another. There is a future for CA. Our gathering here is a testament of our love and service. Allow our higher power(s) to guide the group conscience, and be mindful and respectful of the outcome. Please know that the WSBT will continue to do the best they are capable of doing, this year, and in the future. We all come here to serve, educate, participate, and most of all learn from one another. I, we, thank you for allowing us to serve.

Let us always try to work on helping one another, even in discord. Set aside the thought of entitlement, privilege, prestige, or power. The integrity of this fellowship depends on it. It depends on unity. Our primary purpose combined with Tradition One reminds me that this is and will always be a “We” program. Portions of our Unity literature state:

Unity is a common bond that transcends all differences…

…We admitted our lack of power and accepted that we could not recover alone. The strength and direction of our recovery is found in our unity….

…Through applying the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions, we grow in love, tolerance, and respect for each other. This spiritual growth allows us to rise above prejudice, regardless of religion, ethnicity, economic status, age, gender, or sexual orientation, to carry the CA message. Though we are different, we are the same…

We need to ask for help, lend a hand, and trust that God is the ultimate loving force in what happens here. I realized that we all have our journey, and we should all be supportive, tolerate, patient, and loving of one another…it takes work, but we can try.

We all have our moments of disappointment, discouragement, and disgust…I know I have. Each moment I breathe I am given an opportunity to turn that thinking around. Again…it takes work, and isn‟t that what we are all here to do? WORK!!! This gathering is how it works…

”Have my actions yield respect for my family, and my friends? Were my actions a credit to my faith, and my higher power? And have my actions benefited my program and my fellowship”?

Let us all reflect our answers with honesty, integrity, faith, truth, and forgiveness.

It has been a bittersweet year, but over all I‟ve had a blast. I don‟t know if I’ve been changed for the better, but I do know that because of all of you I have been changed for good. Quoting Oscar Wilde: “For one moment our lives met, our soles touched.” That is how I feel…and I am grateful that our paths have crossed, and our souls have touched…here in Cocaine Anonymous.

Joy H.: They are not dead slates. Should something happen to an acting Trustee, there is a slate in place for a replacement.

Susan B.: Then why aren’t they interviewed now?

Joy H.: We follow the guidelines.

CONFERENCE APPROVED SLATE

The candidates nominated from each region shall be submitted to WSC for ratification by two-thirds vote of the WSC. All candidates who complete the WSC ratification process successfully shall then be considered the Conference Approved Slate of Trustee candidates. This approved slate expires when the WSC adjourns.

The various Trustee Slates shall be submitted to the Conference for ratification as one of the first substantive orders of business. Each Regional Slate, Non-Addict Trustee Slate, WSO Trustee Slate, shall be presented for approval by a single vote of the conference. The ratification of the Regional Slate also constitutes the ratification of the Trustee-at-Large designees and the WS Trustee from the Pacific South Region. If there is an objection to the slate, or any individual on the slate, then each individual on the slate will be considered separately.
