CLOSING REPORT C.A. WORLD SERVICE CONFERENCE 2008
LITERATURE, CHIPS & FORMAT COMMITTEE REPORT
INTRODUCTION AND OPENING COMMENTS
We were delighted to welcome two new full-time members and several visitors to our committee. Our breakout sessions were lively and productive. People and solutions seemed to show up at exactly the perfect time; there was definitely a Higher Power looking out for us and helping us achieve our goals. The process flowed so well that we made quick work of our ten new referrals. With several hours available for subcommittees to meet, we made significant progress on a number of projects. We moved two pieces from subcommittee to Point 7 of the Approval Process, which means they have been approved by our main committee and are now ready for review by the WSBT. Those pieces are the revision of the Self-Test pamphlet and the new pamphlet for the gay and lesbian addict, which now has the working title “C.A. is for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgendered Addict.” The subcommittee on the Crank/Methamphetamines pamphlet was also quite active, but not quite ready to present their latest draft to the main committee.
We are also excited to report that the committee will be working with the World Service Office on the logistics of moving the meditation book forward in a more expeditious manner. This includes reviewing the approximately 90 submissions received to date and exploring ways to encourage additional submissions, as well as exploring the use of existing material from C.A.’s archives.

Roy Ricord – LCF has received many referrals regarding our literature. How it Works is one of the most popular readings and it is important that it is consistent with our inclusive spirit at CA.

Brian Tenenbaum – speak against the motion. We do have a certain amount of history that we are Cocaine Anonymous and we do let anyone in.
Nick Alexander – speak in favor of motion. This is long overdue. It is not just cocaine that is cunning, baffling and powerful and this is an excellent addition.
Pete Nielsen – speaking in favor of the motion. Important that we protect our history but it doesn’t take anything away but adding to our future history. This is cleaning up some stuff that confuses people.
Cynthia Cronkhite – speak in favor of motion. The additional language cannot be made too often. We address it many times throughout our literature. “And all other mind altering substances” got my attention. I have many friends back home that never did or did very little cocaine and it’s important that what is read at the beginning that anyone is welcome here. Read from story in HFCII about the origination of the term “and all other mind altering substances.” I think that says it better than anything else.

Kurt Lynn – speaks against the motion. I can only speak from my experience at my local area. We have no other official literature that refers to the 12X12 and the important information in there. Some type of literature addressing the 12 Traditions is vital in educating our fellowship.
Rose Jones – speaks in favor of the motion because when I got the sponsor, the 12X12 goes along with the Big Book and that’s how we work the steps. If you are active in your recovery, Tradition meetings use this book.

Cynthia Cronkhite – speaks in favor of motion. Clarification – this concept was approved long before I joined committee in 2000. Brought pamphlet to floor in 2001 and it was voted down and it’s been in committee since. We can’t seem to figure out a way to hammer down the information into a pamphlet. We took a look at everything on our plate and prioritize our efforts and we believe it’s better to guide towards the book and not spend time on preparing this pamphlet. There is an excellent tool – Traditions Group Inventory – available now and is downloadable from website.

Peter Olsen – speaks against the motion. If this pamphlet is available to newcomers, will be helpful to them to understand 12X12.
Roy Ricord – speak in favor of motion because we are asking the Conference floor to untie us so that we can get things done that need to be done. We are working on 12X12 book and our committee is not large and our manpower is limited. If we can defocus from this pamphlet, we can focus on writing the book. We looked at all the things that had been approved however long ago and looked at what needed to be prioritized.
Patrice Royal – speaks against the motion. I did hear Cynthia and appreciate what she is saying but not everyone has ability to download. Let’s move forward with this pamphlet.
Michael Chiki – speaks in favor of motion. A pamphlet that has been in committee for 8 years has a problem. The 12X12 works. Reading the book helped me to learn.
Gloria Bridget – speaks against the motion because when I came in I wanted to read every piece of literature there was so that I wouldn’t sound ignorant. We can keep this in and if we take this off, we might as well take all the rest off.

Dan Santa Maria – speaks in favor o fthe motion. I personally believe we already have a guide to the 12 Traditions. Start a Tradition study, work with your sponsor. I’m not certain we do ourselves a service when we make a “Cliff Notes” of our literature. I’m not sure that a 12 Tradition pamphlet is what a newcomer with 30 days is looking for when they are coming into the rooms. The committee has had generations working on this literature and they haven’t been able to make it work.

Members have expressed concern regarding the cocaine specific nature of the ‘Self Test for Addiction’ questionnaire in our literature. In line with being a non-

drug specific fellowship I would like to propose that all instances of the word ‘Cocaine’ be substituted with the word ‘Drug or Drugs’. Please see below for the questions concerned…

RESPONSE: No action taken. This piece was revised in 2004 and has not yet gone through all phases of the publication process. Given the number of other projects we currently have in progress, we do not believe revising this piece is appropriate at this time.
Referral # 5594: Approve the books “Alcoholic Anonymous” and the Twelve Steps and Traditions” and “AA Service Manual” as World Service Conference approved literature.
RESPONSE: We spoke with the maker of this referral regarding the fact that the advisory opinions regarding these publications are included in the World Service Manual. He did not wish to have any further action taken.
Referral # 5667: To take the wording “ We were Addicts” out of all types of readings & pamphlets. Change to we are addicts. The word “were” indicates we are cured also can encourage prideful laziness, cockiness, and forgetfulness of the fact of our history and thus relapse. Relapse is not part of my recovery.

RESPONSE: No action taken. The wording is appropriate given that these pieces are written in the past tense.
Referral #5756: To add “ As Bill Sees It” as CA approved literature. 80% of this book comes from the Big Book and The 12 x 12. It is a great learning tool for the newcomer.
RESPONSE: We are taking no action on this referral because we believe our focus should be on creating new literature for Cocaine Anonymous rather than adopting more advisory opinions regarding AA literature.
Referral #5848: We need a meeting format in Spanish language.
RESPONSE: A Spanish meeting format is already available for download via the online store at ca.org.

Cynthia Cronkhite – this is a concept that has been referred for a number of years. It could be for anyone – friends, family members. The subcommittee went through some history and found the words “eternally grateful” and now that

we have the design it is a great idea for sponsees and fits a number of different categories and it’s whatever it means to you.
Jeffrey Ushry – any consideration to limiting the amount of pamphlets we have? We could go on and on and on. It costs to produce these things and you know how many have been sitting there for a long time and each year someone comes up with a new concept.
Cynthia Cronkhite – yes we have considered that and we did not present any new concepts this year and we are looking at prioritizing and we will continue to look at this and it’s up to all of us really.
Kurt Lynn – I have total respect for the committee and I would still volunteer but the thing that I would like to understand there have been a number of motions to expand the scope to include “all other mind altering substances” what is the committee’s view and would hope that we aren’t trying to become a NA. I know there was a hearing impaired pamphlet and is there any intent to address other disabilities.
Cynthia Cronkhite – disabilities questions has not been referred to us. “All Other Mind Altering Substances” – we have learned from our referrals and what is happening on the floor and as we become more worldwide, we do look at our statement of purpose and it’s about expanding our inventory of materials to reach our ever growing fellowship. It’s a collective effort.
