Literature, Chips and Formats (LCF) Committee REPORT

INTRODUCTION AND COMMENTS:

Dear C.A. Fellowship,

I am delighted to write this report to showcase the work the LCF Committee has carried out over the past 12 months, marked by change, steady progress, and a strong commitment to our service.

During this time, we welcomed James as our new Vice-Chair and Melanie as Co-Secretary, joining Larissa in the Secretary role. Both stepped into their positions seamlessly. Some members completed their service, and I sincerely thank them all for their dedication, time, and contribution to the Committee’s work. At the same time, we were glad to welcome new members whose fresh perspectives have been a valuable addition. We moved from bi-monthly to monthly meetings, creating space for more consistent communication and collaboration.

We are pleased to share several pieces of work which will be brought to the WSC. These include a new draft pamphlet, revised meeting formats, and some exciting concepts that have taken shape over the past 12 months. They reflect the creativity, care, and collaboration within the Committee, and our ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of the Fellowship. Full details are available in the “Summary of Committee Motions” section.

You will have seen the LCF Guidelines revisions in the SR-14 Delegate mailing, where we proposed separating the guidelines into two documents: an internal set to support the functioning of the Committee, and an external set detailing the processes for literature, chips, and formats, the latter intended for WSC approval. This approach aimed to provide clarity and flexibility. However, after receiving thoughtful feedback and further Committee discussion, we have decided to restore what had been considered the internal guidelines back into the main document. In addition, the updates to the introduction and each approval process will be presented as separate motions, allowing the Fellowship to review and consider each part more clearly.

Work on Recalling the Early Days of Cocaine Anonymous has taken more time than originally anticipated. Throughout the process, we have remained focused on ensuring that the final product reflects the care, quality, and historical value it deserves. In preparation for the next stages of review and approval, an ad -hoc committee has been formed with members from WSO, WSOB, LCF and WSBT to help guide this important work to completion. We appreciate the Fellowship’s patience as we continue to move the project forward with thoughtfulness, integrity, and shared purpose.

Each Subcommittee continues to work tirelessly to advance their respective projects. For more detailed updates, please see the “Presentations of Current Activities or Tasks” section.

LCF members remain committed to facilitating the expression of our Fellowship’s hope, faith, and courage through the creation and revision of material for distribution. Our C.A. literature and chips are some of the most valuable tools we have to carry the message to the addict who still suffers. As C.A. continues to grow and evolve, LCF remains enthusiastic in refining and expanding these tools of recovery.

12254827 – Individual submission: I would like to see if we or the committee can have a “topics” page for meetings. Such as life in recovery, what does service mean to you, why CA? etc. Topics for discussion I believe would be helpful to discuss CA based topics in H&I panels as well as meetings. We have how to answer questions and pamphlets but would be a great benefit for a page devoted to it in meeting formats.

13961709 – Individual submission: After discussion at our LCF meeting on the 19th Nov, I’d like to have the Step Study meeting format being revised to a Literature Study meeting format, which includes the list of approved literature titles.

Per our NY member Becca, CANY voted to bring this to WSC: AA has changed the Preamble to the gender neutral “people” from “men and women.” We propose that CA follow suit and change the CA preamble to the gender neutral people” as well.

13506986 – Individual submission: It was brought to my attention whilst hosting my home group that the Preamble along with other readings state that we are a Fellowship of Men & Women, I was asked if it could say “People” however it is not for me to say. The world is evolving and we are all inclusive, therefore we would like to propose that it’s read as _ We are a fellowship not stating “Men and Women”.

16244666 – Individual submission: I’m writing to suggest updating the C.A. preamble to use more inclusive language. Currently, the preamble refers to “men and women.” Since Alcoholics Anonymous has revised its preamble to say “people” instead, I believe C.A. should consider making the same change. I noticed the asterisk on the preamble on the World Service website which advises it was adapted with permission of the A.A. Grapevine, Inc. Using inclusive language reflects our commitment to unity and helps ensure that all who seek recovery feel welcome.

Internal: LCF is proposing to move from the standardized “Meeting Formats” to a “How to Create Your Meeting Format” Guidelines document. This approach would provide greater flexibility for groups to build their formats to their specific needs while maintaining alignment with WS-approved content. It will also streamline the process for LCF to incorporate new readings and materials in the future. This would include:

An overview of different meeting types
Definitions of used terms
Guidance on structuring a meeting format
Downloadable Word and PowerPoint templates that groups can customize
A library of WS-approved readings (e.g., the Preamble, Anonymity Statement, We Can Recover, etc.) available for individual download

A. MOTION 4: Motion to approve the concept of a “How to Create Your Meeting Format” Guidelines to replace the existing Meeting Formats.

7199215 – WSCPI submission: I’d like to submit this new PI leaflet ‘The Power of PI’ in the hope the LCF committee will agree to take it up and take it through the new pamphlet process.

It’s a collaborative effort from the EuroPI PI and the North American PI Summits 2020 It’s designed as PI equivalent to the New High from H&I leaflet -it’s purpose is to explain some different aspects of PI Service and encourage fellowship members into PI service It is laid out in a leaflet format, I can send it as a plain text doc if necessary Thank you

14923456 – Individual submission: To have a Guidance Document produced by CA for long-term illnesses/conditions. prescription medication for Treatment of pain/illness management alongside a CA 12 step program as AA have a guidance document for its

members and many members feel shame and guilt around opiate, cannabinol, stimulant etc use for medical needs.

15385318 – Individual submission: I would love to see a Cocaine Anonymous Medication leaflet available at meetings. In the last few weeks I have used the AA medication leaflet to show fellows who have been unsure on what to do regarding taking prescribed medication.

Myself I take prescribed medication for MS. I only take as my doctor tells me.

Recently a fellow from my home group was told he had relapsed as he was taking prescribed tablets. Thinking he had relapsed he left the meeting and relapsed on street drugs.

This of course is very dangerous for an unqualified fellow to be telling fellows, some will never make it back

The leaflet like AA needs to remind fellows they are not Dr’s and this is an outside issue. I hope CA can come up with a leaflet similar to AA: https://www.aa.org/sites/default/files/literature/p-11_0324.pdf

15283977 – Individual submission – Pre -conference: I would like to see a milestones celebration card (birthday card) available for purchase from the chips n literature order form. Some of us are not so savvy on the computer and birthday cards from stores have gotten really expensive. Something simple, but able to be purchased along with chips, pamphlets, medallions and books. Something with the CA logo and a space for the number of years a person is celebrating. I have seen them in other 12 step programs.

I have attached a rough idea for a card. I am not that good with publisher. I couldn’t get the Cocaine Anonymous inside the chips inner circle on the metal coin on page 2 of my suggestion. I am sure someone with a background in graphics could fix it or whip one up. thank you for considering my request.

RESPONSE: Referred to the WSOB: The LCF committee believes this needs to be transferred to the WSOB for the WSO to look at this and see if it’d be a good idea to create and make available for purchase.

The changes would be the fastest and most effective ways to address this important issue in a super positive way. This would put Cocaine Anonymous at the forefront of change amongst all Fellowships.

This WELCOME that points people of nontraditional Genders AND varied Belief/Non-Beliefs to a statement of navigation that explains the value and importance of applying your personal beliefs to all of COCAINE ANONYMOUS’s literature.

15849820 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: Please make a new Pamphlet titled, “What to expect at a meeting”. Newcomers need to know what they are walking into, how to find a meeting, what different meetings are, what to look for at a meeting. These are all questions we ask ourselves when we get here. It may possibly take the nerves out of the first one, also helpful to give to people who are brand new to recovery.

15689917 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: Dear Members of the LCF Committee, I understand that there is a concept being considered for a Cocaine Anonymous 12 x 12 book. While this is an exciting development, I wanted to share a thought for consideration. Since we already have a 12 Step Companion Guide, it may be more beneficial to focus efforts on developing a 12 Tradition Companion Guide instead. This would provide an opportunity to explore and expand our collective understanding of the Traditions, an area that could greatly benefit from deeper literature and practical guidance for members and groups alike. Alternatively, if new writings on the Traditions are already being developed, perhaps they could be incorporated into the existing 12 Step Companion Guide, creating a unified resource that discusses both the Steps and the Traditions together. This approach could streamline our resources while enhancing the accessibility of CA’s foundational principles for both personal recovery and group unity.

12833171 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: Referral for the LCF Committee to bring a motion at the next WSC for approval of the concept of a new pocket-sized meditation book.

Brief description: While A Quiet Peace is a fantastic and necessary piece of C.A. literature, printed copies can be cumbersome to carry around. The proposed concept of a “pocket-sized” meditation book would result in a finished work similar in size to Hazelden’s Twenty-Four Hours a day (3.35 x 0.7 x 5.7 in; 8.5 x 1.8 x 14.5 cm) or A.A.’s Daily Reflections (4 x 1.1 x 6 in; 10.16 x 2.8 x 15.24 cm). Submissions for the daily entries would be sought from C.A. members throughout the Fellowship. Potential entries could include members’

freestanding thoughts or perhaps their personal reflections on quoted material from existing WSC approved literature. These entries could possibly be accompanied by a meditation, prayer, or action for the day. The proposed book would be an additional tool of recovery for our members, add to CAWS literature offerings, and would be revenue positive for the Fellowship.

11715383 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: The concept I have is for a book with stories from members with long-term sobriety. Centered around challenging life events and how they stayed sober through those events. Divorce, Child Custody, Death, Loss of Employment, marital problems etc. Something that our members could use when they face similar experiences. The reason I suggest long time sobriety and it doesn’t have to be. Is that sometimes years into sobriety things happen that can really rock us spiritually and emotionally. I think it would be a useful tool to have for our members.

11357708 – Structure & Bylaws submission – Pre-conference: In 2021, S&B received a referral regarding gender neutral language in the WSM. A subcommittee was formed, and has been working on the referral. The sub committee wrote motions to Cocaine Anonymous more gender neutral in all areas of print. The motions we wrote would impact LCF. So, we are referring the motions that we made, and including a copy of the original referral.

The S&B committee asks that you consider the following motions as relates to the original attached referral.

Motion that any existing books published by Cocaine Anonymous takes great consideration in being gender neutral, when the time comes for reprinting.

Motion to make meeting formats and pamphlets gender neutral, excluding readings that Cocaine Anonymous doesn’t hold the rights to/not published by Cocaine Anonymous. (reach out to LCF, office board, trustees, H&I, and potentially finance, to follow SR13) all sub committees

Motion to make all future and reprinted literature published by Cocaine Anonymous gender neutral, excluding literature that Cocaine Anonymous doesn’t hold the rights to/not published by Cocaine Anonymous, and/or personal stories as submitted by members.

9730009 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: Please consider the idea of a Service Companion Guide offering original C.A. narrative content regarding the Traditions and Concepts along with exercises to help our members become more effective trusted servants. It would be intended for studying along with A.A.’s Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions and Service Manual, as well as C.A.’s own service-related literature and guidelines, all of which would be referenced and/or quoted with appropriate citations.

9285222 – Individual submission – Pre -conference: Suggestion getting monthly chips. It’s a long time to go between 60 day and 6 month 🙂

14926196 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: Would it be possible to change the wording in We Can Recover that reads, “No one comes to Cocaine Anonymous to find God”. To: “Many of us believe that No One Comes to Cocaine Anonymous to find God”? As the inclusive fellowship that we are and shall forever remain, I believe the current wording lends itself to exclusive, arrogant, and discriminative thinking and thereby action. Please take this submission seriously.

RESPONSE: The LCF Committee has reviewed the submission and determined that the existing wording in We Can Recover is clarified by the sentence that follows (“We came into these rooms to get rid of a terrifying drug habit.”), which reflects the experience of many new members starting on their recovery journey.

14612846 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: My wife has asked me to help her with this safety statement. She has been a committed member of Cocaine Anonymous since 2002, and has immense love for the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous, she is a pillar in the community and has been an excellent support for the women in Edmonton Area, in fact, wherever life takes her.

I regret to report, I know of far too many incidents where instincts have run rampant in and outside of the meeting rooms, the behavior of some has discouraged newcomers and other members from returning. The more experienced members do their best to stay on top of it, coaching everyone to focus on the principles. With our growing numbers, it’s impossible to notice and respond appropriately to each situation. This is a tragedy, because the people who are kept from feeling safe in the rooms may have missed their only chance at recovery.

In reaching out to others for support, I’ve noticed this issue is not local to my group, and it’s not even only confined to Northern Alberta.

Therefore, we concluded to draft a suggested safety statement to be read at meetings. We drafted a statement, attached to this referral, and presented it at the Area level, where we were met with enthusiasm and general support. I am writing this because the members at Area encouraged us to submit this for acceptance in the CA world service manual.

12241124 – WSBT submission – Pre-conference: The LCF Committee of WSC to amend or change the pamphlet “Yes, you can start a C.A. Meeting” to better include current and future meeting platforms for C.A. Meetings.

Discussion

C.A. has grown to include more and more members throughout the world. With that we have crafted our guidelines and manuals to advise the fellowship a way to facilitate growth through starting new C.A. meetings. At some point new types of meeting were included in both the WSM and the pamphlet “Yes, You can start a C.A. Meeting”. The wording of the part of new meetings are as follows:

Quote WSM:

ONLINE MEETINGS:

Email meetings – These are email based and run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Voice meetings – These are voice only, voice over internet protocol meetings and are similar in format to face to face meetings.

These few lines are no longer sufficient, as they don’t include Video meetings online via Zoom or other similar platforms. These meeting is not included in either the manual or literature such as “Yes, You can start a C.A. Meeting”. Furthermore, we assume that the future might create possibilities for C.A. meeting in other settings that we know nothing or very little about.

In our discussions we touched the idea that the wording might benefit of being technology neutral to be able to include current and hopefully also future types of meetings and platforms. We also debated the actual definition of a C.A. meeting or group. The current wording is clear:

Quote, WSM:

DEFINITION OF A COCAINE ANONYMOUS “GROUP”

Two or more C.A. members meeting regularly to share their experience, strength and hope with each other, may call themselves a Cocaine Anonymous Group when:

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances.
It is fully self-supporting.
Its primary purpose is to help addicts recover through the Twelve Steps of C.A.
It has no outside affiliations.
It has no opinion on outside issues.
Its public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion

We leave the decision of any action to the respective committee and have no suggestion or opinion on wording or details regarding, but we believe it would be of great benefit to the fellowship to be up to date and current and reflect the fellowship we have today, and that we seek in the future. We also believe that S&B and LCF could work on these matters in co-operation.

RESPONSE: Work to revise Yes, You Can Start a C.A. Meeting pamphlet has started.

11322160 – Individual submission – Pre-conference: The steering of the Monday night 12×12 meeting, south central district feels that the wording “just don’t use or drink – no matter what” should be removed from the Tools of Recovery pamphlet. It is felt that this phrase could be a misrepresentation of the message of recovery as outlined in the Big Book. As such, it could be misinterpreted by the newcomer.

RESPONSE: Work to revise Tools of Recovery pamphlet has started.

PRESENTATIONS OF CURRENT ACTIVITIES OR TASKS (no motions)

C.A. Twelve Traditions and Twelve Concept Illustrated

Significant progress has been made on the Traditions and Concepts Illustrated book, thanks to Jay and the Subcommittee. A first draft of all 12 Concepts and all 12 Traditions pages has been completed, with a clear and consistent format now established. The next phase will focus on finalising a formal draft of each piece for internal review. A review subcommittee is in the early stages of formation, with members from across the C.A. Fellowship, and will guide the commenting process as well as decisions around illustrations and design. This includes cover artwork and prefatory pages, with support from a professional illustrator, member of C.A. Wales. The project continues to move forward with care, creativity, and broad participation.

In Light of Our Experience – 12&12

The current Subcommittee, with Matt as Chair, has been steadily working on the In Light of Our Experience – 12&12 project over the past few years. The goal is to help create a C.A. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions book rooted in the lived experience of our Fellowship. To support this, the Subcommittee has been diligently gathering and organising material from WSBT minutes, Fellowship books and pamphlets, NewsGram

articles, and audio shares. This, as you can imagine, is a huge feat as our Fellowship has over 40 years of experience.

The Subcommittee is always looking for new members to join. Come and be part of bringing this to life.

Hope, Faith and Courage Volume III

The Subcommittee, led by Renzo, is gaining momentum as story submissions begin to come in. We are looking for more members to join in this rewarding work in creating the next Hope, Faith and Courage volume and help those stories come to life. You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to show up, read with care, and support the process. We welcome anyone to submit their story of hope, faith and courage to Lcfhfc3subs@ca.org. Submissions in native languages are also supported and appreciated, every voice matters.

Tools of Recovery

The Subcommittee, with Arlene serving as Chair, revised the Tools of Recovery pamphlet and submitted it to WSBT for review. While progress has been made, more work is needed, and this will continue after the WSC. If you would like to join us and bring this piece of literature to a new version, we would love you help.

Glossary of Terms

This project was assigned to LCF by the WSO, with the goal of creating a Glossary of Terms related to C.A.’s program of recovery. The glossary is intended to support the WSO Translation Subcommittee in producing accurate and consistent translations of C.A. literature going forward. A new Subcommittee has been formed, chaired by Melanie, with the aim of completing the glossary early in 2026.

If you have a passion for language or simply want to be of service in a unique and meaningful way, we would love to have you involved.

Safety Statement and Crosstalk Definition

This project is aimed to offer additional resources that reinforce the safety and clarity already present in our meetings. The Subcommittee, chaired by Susan, has already collected source material on both topics that can start being crafted in service of this project. Understanding that there’s no one-size -fits-all approach, the Subcommittee hopes to continue collecting statements used by other meetings, with the intention of presenting several different options from which a meeting might choose to include as-is or modify for their purposes.

We look forward to further collaboration and welcome any input or experience from members who would like to contribute.

Publication Oversight

The Subcommittee, with Cynthia as Chair, is working on a detailed spreadsheet tracking all outstanding publication and housekeeping issues in order to support and work with the WSO in bringing all of our literature current.

New: I Thought I Was Only Hurting Myself

A great deal of work has already gone into those pamphlets, and we are grateful to everyone who has contributed so far. We are now looking for new Chairs to help re-form the respective Subcommittees, with the goal of moving each project forward and presenting a draft at the 2026 WSC. If you are passionate about carrying the message and want to be part of completing these resources, we would love you to join.

CLOSING COMMENTS:

This has been my first year serving as Chairperson of the LCF Committee, and it has been a year of learning, growth, and deep appreciation. I have come to see just how much care and dedication goes into every piece of literature we help make available. I am truly humbled by the commitment, passion, and spirit of service shown by our committee members throughout the year. Thank you for trusting me with this role, and for the ongoing support that makes this work possible.

Jacob – Yes and no, it’s more of a structure for meetings to develop their structures. If they want to.
