Chair’s Opening Remarks (George)
Dear WSBT, welcome to our Q3 quarterly. We have come a long way; although we are not all here physically I know we are together in spirit. For some of us it’s the end of a long journey: after conference we will be bidding you all a fond farewell. With conference finally upon us, we still have much to accomplish. What to expect who knows, but I can stand fast with all the decisions we have made. I believe this board has done a monumental job. We have persevered

through these unprecedented times with courage, humility and belief in the principles we adhere to. My heartfelt thanks to you members who will be rolling off your assistance through my tenure has been invaluable. You have all brought something to the table which kept this board a viable instrument of our fellowship. As I stated earlier, here we are at the end of this part of our journey. Let’s finish with unity and pray for guidance from the spirit that guides us.

Hi CAWS board. We are a licensed vendor of Narcotics Anonymous and are looking for a similar program with CAWS but have been unable to find it. We have had several people asks us whether we can print hoodies and t-shirts with the CA logo and wish to respect the guidelines of the organization. Can you advise? Are we able to license or become an approved vendor? If so what is the process.

Your Message: To the C.A. Trustees,
My name is Misty and I am a delegate for the San Fernando Valley Area. I am writing to you because of concerns my area has about going forward with an in person Conference this year.
The first concern is the financial hardship that an in person Conference would cause the areas. Our area has not been able to raise enough money each month to cover the normal operating funds this year and the fundraising opportunities have been limited due to Covid-19. Not using the Force Majeure (Act of God) clause, with Conference only 4 months away, does not seem to be a fiscally responsible decision for the fellowship as a whole. Based on the most recent letter from the Trustees, the question of why it was stated that “our hotel contract must be honored” has come up. Why does the Act of God clause only apply to the hotel and not to the financial hardship on Cocaine Anonymous?
The second concern is the ability to have a group conscience represented by areas all around the world. Travel restrictions may still be in effect limiting our ability to have worldwide delegates represented. If delegates from outside the United States have to quarantine, who would pay for this expense?
Lastly, there is the issue of social responsibility and public relations. If we hold an in person conference, are we encouraging our delegates to participate in a large in person event which may harm the public perception of our fellowship? Are we encouraging non-essential travel when it may not be recommended? Doing the Conference while adhering to social distancing guidelines also seems like it would be very difficult to actually accomplish. What do we do about the delegates who would financially need to share a room with someone from another area?
It is truly an honor to be of service in an area that is considering the needs of Cocaine Anonymous as a whole. We know the decisions being made because of the pandemic are not easy, and we appreciate everyone’s service. Please consider these points before the final decision is made for an in person Conference for 2021. Thank you!

Dear Delegates and fellow members,
Since we last wrote to you in March the Regional Trustees have reached out to the Area Delegates to poll them on whether if a face-to-face Conference were to be held would they attend. We received an overwhelming positive response and with restrictions lifted in California and other states and provinces across North America it was decided to push ahead with organising this year’s Conference. Throughout we kept in close contact with the World Service Office Board (WSOB) and of course the World Service Conference, Conference Committee (WSCCC). We also kept in contact with the Conference hotel team.
Since it was possible that several Areas would not be able to send Delegates, due to ongoing travel restrictions, we asked the WSCCC to prepare for a hybrid Conference with the option for those unable to attend to do so virtually. This we did to ensure that the right of participation would be afforded to all Areas and that our Conference remained democratic. The WSCCC have done an amazing job this past year, investigating options for attendance, obtaining quotes, and affording our Fellowship the flexibility to move forward with this year’s Conference, in whatever form it would have to take. Their diligence while having to juggle several options is much appreciated.
As it turns out, the Presidential Proclamation from January, having been reviewed only recently, is still in place and this has restricted travel to the United States for the Delegates from both the European Region and Mainland Europe Region. These two Regions now represent approximately two fifths of our Fellowship. They will be attending virtually, as will other Delegates from around the world who are unable to attend due to local travel restrictions and other reasons such as personal health concerns. The Conference this year may look and feel different, but we are confident that the business of our Fellowship will be carried out and after a long stretch of separation a great unity will be achieved.
Whilst deliberating whether to push ahead with the Conference we considered the health implications to those attending. If the pandemic was still at its height, we would have cancelled the Conference and applied the force majeure (act of God) clause in the hotel contract. The term ‘super spreader event’ which only those who are fans of the disaster genre would have heard of before 2019, was foremost in our minds and of course how we could avoid the risk of this. The hotel has operated throughout the pandemic, hosting air crews from around the world with testing stations set up. We considered asking for testing to be carried out and possibly the wearing of masks etc. We did not feel it appropriate to insist on any practices over and above those in place through local ordinance and State law. It should be noted that the situation is fluid and legal requirements in Los Angeles may dictate precautions.
We would however ask that those attending the Conference face-to-face please consider your health before attending and endeavour to practice the good precautionary habits we have adopted over the past eighteen months. We would also ask that you please respect the wishes of fellows who may not be comfortable with a return to close contact as of yet. This may also allow for more of our fellows to return to local face-to-face meetings, as they open up.
In the case of the those attending Conference, we would ask that if you feel unwell that you please remove yourself from the main debating chamber or breakout spaces and notify the Conference Committee. We would ask that you do the same if falling ill shortly after leaving the Conference. This so as to allow those who have been in close proximity to be notified, so that they can take precautions. We do not expect there to be any such outbreaks however we feel it important to put prudent practices in place.

Our Fellowship is in a good and healthy position to carry our message. We would like to thank all those Areas, Districts, Groups, and individuals who have supported our World Services throughout these arduous times. The various Conference committees have worked diligently throughout the past two years and there is a host of business being brought to the Conference floor. We look forward to a wonderful event, where the conscience of our whole Fellowship comes together.

Thank you for your enquiry. Please accept our apology for not being able respond to you immediately.
The pandemic has had a considerable effect on the format of our meetings, and we have indeed moved over to online forums. It does appear that most of the meetings that have gone online have done so via Zoom. This has created both challenges and opportunities. Although our program of action has remained the same it has made a significant difference to how we have delivered it, and it is expected that some of the changes will permanent. We would be happy to discuss this with you and explain how we have adjusted. we realise that your original deadline has probably passed but maybe a follow-up piece or alternate article may be appropriate.
As our name describes we are an anonymous fellowship and therefore we would appreciate individual’s names not being published / posted. Also, although we use services such as Zoom we do not endorse or affiliate with them.

Greetings,
I have a couple questions regarding what is and is not registered trademark for Cocaine Anonymous under the policy statement in the World Service Manual (WSM). The understanding I have is the CA logo and the motto We’re Here and We’re Free is the only designated material trademarked for Cocaine Anonymous. It was recently brought to my attention in the WSCIT Committee workbook page 10, Requirements for C.A. Area/District Websites, section f) …..”C.A.”, “Cocaine Anonymous” and the C.A. logo are registered trademarks of Cocaine Anonymous World Service, Inc. All rights reserved.” There appears to be conflicting statements between the policy statement and the suggested disclaimer for use on websites. What is truly registered trademark material?
Furthermore, the notion I have when using the CA logo on media content “no other text or design element may touch, overlap or show through behind the logo other than a solid color. The block letters “CA” may only be used alone when they bear no resemblance to the inner circle type style of the official logo” is self-explanatory. However, there is no mention about design element on media content with respects to the motto We’re Here and We’re Free. Would the same “design element” statement apply to the motto since it is registered trademark or does it not?

The above are also registered in Canada. In other countries we have chosen not to pursue the “We’re Here and We’re Free” trademark. We are pursuing the other 3 trademarks as needed around the world and have done so in the EU, the UK, and South Africa.
Only the logo is a design. The other trademarks are text, independent of font or appearance, and have somewhat different rules. We ask that the CA block letters not be used alone in the same font as the logo to avoid confusion between the text and design trademarks.
In the case of the logo, a design trademark, the law is sensitive to using only portions, or incorporating it into other designs in ways that obscure what the registered trademark actually is. So, we ask that the entire logo be used, and that it not touch, cover or be covered by any additional design element. It is also best practice that the ® be placed to the lower-right and outside of the logo itself, if possible. If this is not possible, such as on a coin, it should be as presented on our coins and chips.
We hope that this clears up the reasoning and possible confusion your Area might have, given the various ways this information has been communicated in the past. As you point out, our service material could stand some alignment to avoid adding confusion and we hope that the Conference will address this at some future date.

Message I am the Webmaster for Marijuana Anonymous World Services and we have become aware that OnLive.co is listing Zoom-based recovery meetings from (best I can tell) all the fellowships (I’ve seen AA, NA, and MA meetings there). They gathered these meeting links from public sources such as our World Services site, district sites, etc. What alarmed us most was they feature a Donate button that we believe flies in the face of Traditions 6, 7. We reached out to OnLive.co support and have begun engaging them to better understand their platform. What is clear to us is that our individual meeting hosts would have to sign-on to their platform, claim a meeting or setup a meeting there, and enter _bank information_ to claim donated funds. OnLive.co claims that they never take a fee from donated funds except the fee that their payment process charges. So, I’m bringing this to your attention in case you were unaware of this or if you wish to act on this and contact OnLive.co yourselves. Although each fellowship has a singleness of purpose perhaps we can band together to address this. I will be reaching out to NA and AA as well. Thank for your time.

Message Hi, we had a member with 20+years somewhat “go off” on the topic leader the other night. The leader was a bit vague in introducing the topic and when the old timer spoke, his tone was contemptuous. He had seen this person in meetings before while he was high, and the old timer questioned if he was high again. Some people were upset and the old timer apologized and said he couldn’t figure out the topic but a “lynch mob” had formed. I have spoken with the old timer and told him it sounded like he had a resentment with the topic leader. Old timer agreed and he put pen to paper and we talked about it. Last night, the three of us had dinner and went to another meeting. Topic leader doesn’t feel he is owed an amends and everyone got along well. The “mob” is wanting to ban or at least tell the old timer not to come there for X period of time. I think we should show love and tolerance of others and if someone bothers you, call your sponsor. The “mob” thinks he “runs people off” and want to take action. Any thoughts?

Dear WSBT,
I am writing to you regarding circumstances of which you should be aware. It is with no pleasure that I write to you but know that I have the full support of my fellow delegates, Cameron and Tom, and Chad, the OSA Chairperson.
I will do my best to simply highlight pertinent comments and concerns.
On August 17th, I was contacted by our Area Fundraising and Special Events Chair, Rich B, about a situation that had developed between he and Trustee Laurence in the C.A. Europe Events WhatsApp.
At issue was the posting of available fundraising merchandise in the OSA Web Store. Trustee Laurence asked that Rich cease and desist from posting the info to the group. Rich is one of our young guns in recovery and service and has great enthusiasm for the work. He has done an exemplary job on behalf of the OSA.
Before Rich became F&SE Chair, we had some fundraisers but none were as successful as those Rich and his committee have accomplished.
Trustee Laurence has some very strong opinions about the OSA and how we fundraise.
[4:52 PM, 8/17/2021] Jason Laurence: Dear Susan, Please would you assist. I have asked Rich to stop inundating the European Events group with OSA merchandise. I turned a blind eye to the occasional advert but it’s become constant advertising and it is inappropriate. No other Area behaves like this. Arras are supposed to be fully self supporting. Also the merchandise is not created by the OSA it is just vast array of catalogue items with our logo stuck on it. Our World Service Office is charged with carrying out the business of C.A. It is not the function of an Area.
[8:34 PM, 8/17/2021] Susan B: Hi Jason, Please excuse Rich’s zeal. As you might imagine, the OSA needed to get creative when it came to our Area fundraising. I have asked him not to post OSA Store flyers in your group but to simply message that there are new items. Would you kindly add him back into the group? He is still new (just took a year) but very enthusiastic in his commitment to service. He has also been asked to include more items with the OSA logo on them. [3:43 AM, 8/18/2021] Jason Laurence: What you are selling is not memorabilia. You have hooked up with a fulfilment company who will provide hundreds, if not thousands of products with our logo on them. The WSBT receive several propositions a year from companies offering this ‘service’ and we always respectfully decline. We are not a merchandising company. The World Service Office is charged with supplying C.A. items. You are effectively looking to the whole Fellowship to fund your Area and that is not appropriate, as I’m sure you will appreciate. Also, by engaging with a company in that fashion we are invariably endorsing their products. Rather than members making simply Tradition donations it is being suggested that they should support the Felliwship by purchasing OSA merchandise. If they do so…
Following this logic, C. A. should not be selling literature on Amazon! I appreciate the fact that the Trustees decided this was not a good option for CAWSO, Inc, however it was indeed the best option for the OSA and has worked very well for us. A.s an Area with no geographical boundaries it solves the problem of being able to reach our members, wherever they may be.

[3:26 PM, 8/19/2021] Jason Laurence: Please don’t strike another match in Europe. – I believe this was in response to my response to this question Does rule # 62 apply to WhatsApp groups? Asking for a friend: Always! However, I call them like I see them. That a trusted OSA servant would be chastised and removed from this group by a Trustee for doing his service treads very close to stepping on the 2nd Tradition, IMO. As for the other, it was unnecessary. My apologies to the group.
Other group members do not have a problem with the OSA Store posts:
- The OSA store has raised over $1000 to help carry the message to the still suffering addict which is commendable. They’re limited with how they reach addicts so WhatsApp groups are a natural channel. What they do is like an ongoing event purely for raising funds (no different to a one off unity day but it’s ongoing with new products being launched). Surely people can scroll past if they’re not interested? People often post the same meeting multiple times but we just scroll past and don’t make a fuss. Really surprised to witness this chain of comments and see someone removed.
- I think its a load of old bollocks personally. This is a watsap group and people can post CA related stuff if they wish. If it’s not to your liking…scroll on. Its really that simple…surely?
- Subsequently, a member asked for a group conscience. No action has been taken.
Also, I appreciate Trustee Laurence contacting Rich to add him back to the group. There was more argument and Jason proceeded to block Rich. This post below prevented any resolution.
