Opening Comments
This has been an exciting year for the Public Information Committee. We had our 1st PI summit in January with four Trustees holding a Concepts Workshop. We produced 3 video PSA’s as

approved by Conference last year. We participated in NADCP as a committee for the first time, which was a success. The PI handbook is now revised and current.

John O. – The first one was hosted by Colorado PI Committee, and it is what got us caught up on our post conference work. Getting together to do the work is great. Sarah T. – Explain what it is exactly please. Will it be on Skype?
John O. – We sent out a flier in a Delegate Mailing. Was an idea to have a fundraiser to have a CPC luncheon in Denver. It was very valuable for us as a committee to get together and get work done. Had great recovery workshops and speakers during the event as well as getting work done.
Suzanne V. – I’m not sure why this is a motion. If committee members want to go out on their own funds to do this, why is there a motion?
John O. – Originally we were going to ask for financing from WSO, so we did need a motion.
Now we are no longer asking for funds, we just want support.
Russell S. – In favor of the motion. Not exactly sure what this is, but I’m in favor as PI has gotten a lot of enthusiasm going and you need to keep doing whatever it is you are doing. John W. – Is this going to be an annual thing and will it move to other areas besides Denver?

Melissa W. – Yes, hope it will continue each year and we would love to see it rotate outside of Denver in the future. We brought this motion to the floor so the World would recognize the benefits of this event. Not asking for funds at this time, but it might grow in the future. Suzanne V. – I’m in favor of the committee’s work. Speak against this motion because I do not see the purpose of Conference approval. Do not see the need to have Conference approval to get involved in an event.
Anne M. – I see you have a good speaker line up. Will they come out on their own or is there a budget for it?
John O. – They are coming out on their own funds.
Robin L. – Appreciate the work your doing. Sounds like you are doing a mini-conference. Is that your purpose as you have invited other committees to attend as well?
John O. – Yes, the PI committee voted to make this a committee event. We are hoping that because of the results that came from the last one, that maybe this would be appealing to the Conference as a whole.
Jay P. – What does ‘co-host’ means?
John O. – Open to anyone who wants to attend from any committee. Last year there was the steering committee and there was people from WSO there too. Allowed us to get significant work done post conference.
Dwanna J. – How come you are not asking for funds?
John O. – At this point, we didn’t think it was prudent to ask for funds when there are other more important projects that we need funds for. It is currently taking care of itself.
Ira L. – Love the work and enthusiasm this committee has. I am confused about this motion as you are asking for permission to do PI work during the year. Your work is to do PI work, not put on a mini-conference. Please consider withdrawing this motion. John O. – Motion withdrawn.

Stuart J. – The website will help area PI committees to create their website, based on the Scotland website, the content will remain and specific Area info can be put in. It is an inexpensive way to have a website for an Area. There is a cost to host a website, but the template would have no cost. Content would be given to WSO.
Jim S. – I am speaking as delegate now, not the IT Chair. The IT Committee discussed this with PI. This is a fantastic thing and a great way to get the info out to the fellowship. The more websites we get out and the more hits we get, the further up the search engine we get and it will help us. There is no cost attached to the template and it will be very helpful to smaller areas with no skills to build a site themselves.
John W. – Will there be instructions and such to go with the template?
Stuart J. – There will be an instruction manual and screenshots to help with the template. Melissa W. – I played around with this awhile ago. It is very easy to figure out and the instructions provided are good. We will also make a how-to video to help with this. Michael C. – In favor, this will very much help OSA and other areas.
Kevin M. – About 20 years ago, PI had templates that were eventually taken over by the IT Committee. Now it is happening all over again. PI is finding it necessary to do it themselves. Why isn’t the IT committee doing this?
Melissa W. – Internet is the #1 way to reach out to the public. The PI Survey shows internet has significantly increased the number of people coming into C.A. This is a great way to get info out there to the public. It is a great tool.
Jim S. – PI has a large number of members. IT has significantly less members. We don’t have the resources to do what PI is doing. I speak in favor of this.
Jason L. – We have had a website in CAUK for a long time but it is getting old and needs to be updated. We need a budget for it, etc, etc. This has been going on for a long time and the cost is large. If there is a template already created and the work is already done, we could update our site easily. Would be very helpful to large and small areas alike. Speak in favor.
Suzanne V. – Think this is great idea. New areas have a hard time creating websites that are approved by WSO. Would feel more comfortable about this template if IT had presented this. Michelle D. – Where would the downloads be located?
Melissa W. – We don’t care how it gets out there, if it goes through WSO that would be fine, just
as long as it gets out there for fellowship use.

In our area, we had members get enthusiastic and said Tradition 5 states “Each group has but one primary purpose to carry the message to the addict that still suffers.” Our members were ready to use their own resources to fly to Denver to do PI work. We got scared and told them “no”. We do not want members to use their own resources to carry the message. Thank you for all of the work that you do on behalf of C.A.

Melissa W. – We wanted to turn this idea into a motion so that we could specifically make a PSA for an online area.
Stu E. – So, that leads to some other questions. Do you have to bring a new concept or PSA to the conference floor each time?

Susan L. – I submitted this referral so that we would have a way to reach addicts in our online area. We have people from all over the world in our meetings. I wanted to start a dialog with PI to get this started.

Duane M. – Unfortunately, I speak against this motion. The NADCP is national. Drug Court is local. The WSBT has attended and participated in the NADCP for the past 14 years. We are the financial planners of this fellowship and we say “no”.
John O. – I speak for this motion. The last thing I witnessed when I attended the NADCP, is that some of the contacts that I made did not know anything about C.A. I get a chance to tell them about our fellowship.
Elizabeth S. – I did have the opportunity to go to this conference in Anaheim. This is the exact work that PI should be doing attending this conference. The WS Conference is the place this information should be brought to. I speak in favor of this motion.
Ira L. – I do support PI, but as the WSO Trustee, I do not just serve a region but the World. Our primary purpose is to carry the message to addicts that still suffers, not professionals who attend the conference to pick up swag. After reviewing the results of attending this conference, I think we should evaluate this. Speak against the motion.
Sara T. – Speak in favor of the motion. I connected to professional people first before recovering addicts. Our professional community is important. PI should be allowed to be involved with the NADCP.
Carla S. – Violate the 6th Tradition. We are not a part of the NADCP. We need to make sure we are not affiliated with the NADCP.
Michael C. – I speak in favor of this motion. I do not care that the professionals show up in suits at the NADCP. Let’s carry the message and give them the information.
Paul S. – I speak against the motion. I cannot commend the PI committee for their efforts with the NADCP. Working with Drug Court is more effective on a local level. We need to be in their faces. We will not be effective on a national level.
Russell S. – I speak in favor of the motion. In the UK, the PI committee was given $1,600 a month to attended events. We had large pockets of the country that was not been serviced by our fellowship. The issue is not about attending this particular event. I think the issue is that we should attend more of these events. I put my money in the hat so that these types of events can happen. I don’t think we should cut this event. We should encourage it.
Rob W. – I speak against the motion. As a Trustee at Large for this fellowship, I have attended this event for the past 4 years. 5,000 people attend the NADCP. In my brain, I said that we made a huge impact. This year, we were the last group in the last aisle. I realized at this point, how effect are we? I firmly believe that we should be in drug court, but not the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. It is in the local Drug Courts that we are effective. At the national level, is it really worth it? No. The Trustee at Large has been attending NADCP for the past 15 years. It is a line item in our office budget every year. Let’s do Drug Court in local areas of C.A. where we can be effective.

- PSA’s – As a new subcommittee the members took on multiple projects. Getting the radio PSA’s to all our areas while establishing a system to collect hotline numbers for these areas. Frequent contact with Radio stations to ensure continued broadcasting of our PSA’s. Created a new C.A. PI Poster. Three new PSA videos in production, currently working on additional PSA’s for 2017 for Conference approval. PSA’s Liaison is Troy L.

- European Region – This committee has hit the ground running. Establishing committee structure as well as defining goals to generate membership in the international region. Like the PI Stewards committee, they will exchange PI thoughts and concerns on a monthly conference call. They also have their own Google group to be able to share documents. PI Liaison for the European Region is Stuart J.

- Stewards of PI – Items that the committee will continue to work on include: Compiling lists of PI chairs for various Districts, Areas and Regions of Cocaine Anonymous. Have created a Google group database for the all C.A. PI chairs to access information and assistance and have established an email: castewardsofpi@gmail.com which was shared with all members of the conference call. Had first conference call with 9 PI chairs of various districts, areas, and regions as well as discussed the role of the different sub-committees and how the Stewards of PI can assist them by “service sponsorship” providing tools such as the WSCPI Handbook and the World Service Manual. We will be working on procedures to make sure that all approved resources are available to the Fellowship, so that they may have growth in their respective areas. Scheduled a conference call to take place on the first Sunday of every month involving both Chairs and Stewards starting October 2, 2016. Will also provide the link to the PI survey placed within the Google group and available to all interested CA members who need guidance to help the still suffering. The results from this follow up effort will be compiled by Region and shared with the Stewards of PI Committee Chair for distribution to each Area PI Chair providing them with an essential tool for reaching the Drug Court Professions in their area. - NADCP – We are culling the information that was gathered by our Public Information Chairs at the National Association of Drug Court Professionals in July 2016. Committee Members reached out to each professional on the list. “How can we help you help us to reach those you serve” was one pf the questions asked. Local C.A. meeting information, Literature, and Starter Kits were offered. We then asked what other resources they might need. There was a great response from the community. Request for presentations,

pamphlets and meeting list were noted. Remembering our primary purpose as stated in our 5th Tradition, it is our goal to share with the suffering addict our life changing solution as they navigate through their local judicial system.

As my second Conference as chair of Public Information I have seen many opportunities to help carry the message of Cocaine Anonymous. This year I have a very passionate committee who sole goal is to reach out to the addict who still suffers. I am deeply grateful that they have allowed me to be on this committee.
