INTRODUCTION AND COMMENTS:

Dear CA Members,

What an incredible year it has been! I am delighted to summarize the outstanding achievements and enthusiasm of our Public Information Committee members and subcommittee chairs. Their dedication and passion for PI culminated in this year’s successful SR14 submission and the myriad of efforts carried out throughout the year. The energy and commitment of our members have transformed our PR resources and materials, enabling our areas, districts, and meetings to effectively carry the message to newcomers and those still suffering.

In North America, the subcommittee excelled at the PI Summit, enhancing global communication through monthly organic calls. These efforts kept members informed and connected worldwide, contributing significantly to our SR14 pack. Special thanks to our subcommittee chair and vice chair, Rod, for advancing the new 4-point process with Joe B and our esteemed Trustee Ruby C. and fostering collaboration across all committees within the fellowship.

Europe also saw a remarkable year of engagement and output. The support for new areas, meeting PI resources, and the submission of posters for the SL14 process have been exemplary. Exciting video contributions, although constrained by the current 8 -point process, hold promise for future implementation pending process approval. The shift to billboards and adherence to Tradition Six

compliance has been notable, providing members with the necessary resources to implement PI within our traditions effectively.

Jackie has done an outstanding job leading the survey subcommittee, navigating the complexities of diverse regulations across countries. Her meticulous work ensures that our surveys are tailored to fit various contexts.

Payton, who joined late in the year as the subcommittee chair, has admirably risen to the challenge, bringing fresh energy and perspective to what was previously our NADCP committee.

We are thrilled to welcome Charise as the new subcommittee chair for the members’ area website, following Joe B’s stellar contribution in the role. Post-conference, Charise will lead the effort to update and upload any approved items, ensuring our website remains a vital resource for our members.

Joe B has been instrumental in managing our media subcommittee, championing the approval process, and handling all media-related tasks, from creating surveys to assisting with graphic inputs for PR materials. His dedication has been invaluable.

Donna has rotated into the North American summit position, and we are excited to announce that the North American PI Summit will be held from March 12th-15th in Indianapolis at La Quinta, 5120 Victory Dr., alongside the Tri-State Convention. We eagerly anticipate welcoming more PI enthusiasts at this event. Please mark your calendars!

Public Service Announcements

The World Service Conference (WSC) of Cocaine Anonymous has approved Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for television, radio, and other media outlets, here are some suggestions on how to use them.

Some media outlets donate airtime to non-profit organizations for public service announcements. In seeking to have a PSA aired, you should contact the Station Manager or person responsible for public affairs and ask how to deliver the required format of the PSA for consideration. A good place to start might be local non-profit/community or university radio and television stations. The media outlet’s website may have the information you seek.

Carrying the Message to the Professional Community

By professional community, we mean any organizations, entities, or individuals whose activities could provide additional contacts and exposure for the Fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous. Those include, but are not limited to:

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)
Health and treatment professionals and their organizations
Schools and universities
Law enforcement agencies
Trade unions
Local and State government social service agencies

It only takes two or more enthusiastic members to form a PI committee.

Suggested Checklist:

Set a venue, date, and time for a committee forming/ steering meeting – inform your fellows of the date and time of the meeting and that a PI Committee is being formed
Hold the meeting (hopefully, others will turn up- if they don’t, don’t panic- PI outreach can still take place)

1. Vote in a Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Literature person. Other posts could include – Vice Chair, Outreach Coordinator, Web Servant, Hotline, etc.
2. Let your Area or District know that you have formed a new committee (if you have one), your new chairperson will form part of the Area or District Committee where ideas, enthusiasm, and solutions to challenges are shared. This also enables you to keep your Area or District informed about PI activities and opportunities.
3. Familiarize yourself with the traditions and service guidelines in the PI Handbook
4. Consider setting up a local Public Information email address so you can manage enquiries and media contacts. It is advised that you have multiple administrators for these accounts, so the responsibility is not left to one individual. This can be useful to protect anonymity when placing adverts and announcements in the local press

e. Plan your PI activities. You can get ideas for this from the section in this handbook on “Starting a Local PI Committee”

f. The World Service Conference Public Information Committee has many effective proven ideas from other areas they can share. The World PI holds regular online “Connection” meetings where local PI committee members share their experiences. Contact the committee via email at PI@CA.org.

Your District or Area may be able to provide funds for these and other expenses – however they will need to know what you plan to spend the money on, so prepare a budget and get multiple quotes as per the Financial Guidelines. Be prepared to explain what the money is for and how it will benefit the growth of the fellowship as well as the addict that still suffers. Remember other opportunities will present themselves, so allow some additional budget for this too, as well

Cocaine Anonymous is a fellowship of people of all socio-economic backgrounds, comprised of all races, genders, sexual orientation, religious and spiritual beliefs. The C.A. Fact File contains information about the fellowship, what substances we used, and how we found our way into the

You can be of great service to your fellowship by translating materials locally and passing them on to the World Service Office for review.

Your Local Library

Our books are an effective way of getting our message out to the public. Many Areas/ Districts have successfully placed our books into public, university, and high school libraries. Some libraries may also be interested in a speaker presentation or literature rack or have a gener al in f o r m a t io n board where a C A poster or flyer could be di s played.

Book and Literature Placement

Our books and other literature are an effective way of getting our message out to the public. Ideas for book and literature placement include but are not limited to school libraries, treatment facilities, local probation and parole offices, community healthcare centers, coffee shops, lending libraries at your local meeting places and LGBTQ+ community centers in your area. Use the creative ideas from members in your District/Area to broaden this list. Some libraries, schools and community centers may also be interested in a speaker presentation, a literature rack or displaying one of our many posters. Our monthly PI Connection calls provide a wealth of ideas for book and literature placement.

Resolution: Creating Literature Pamphlets for Underserved Specialized Communities within the CA Recovery Community

Whereas: There are several underserved specialized communities within the Cocaine Anonymous (CA) recovery community.

Whereas: Currently, we have literature that specifically reaches out to the LGBTQIA+ community, as evidenced by the resource available at https://ca.org/literature/ca-is-for/. Whereas: Recognizing the importance of reaching out to the LGBTQIA+ community as an underserved group within the CA family, it is essential to extend similar outreach efforts to other specialized groups.

Therefore be it resolved that:

We create literature pamphlets tailored to the following communities: African American, Indigenous People, Latino/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and any other underserved communities that may yet to be determined. These pamphlets will address the unique needs, challenges, and experiences of each community within the context of recovery.

These literature pamphlets will serve as valuable resources to provide support, guidance, and encouragement to individuals within these communities who are seeking recovery from addiction. By acknowledging and addressing the specific needs of each underserved community, we aim to promote inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility within the CA recovery community.

In the current WSPIC Guidelines, there is no guidelines to handle helpline calls. This used to be in the 2016 version. I extracted this info at the time to share with our Area group.

When our area asked about what the guidelines were, I had to revert to this document. Having guidelines is critical for hand-over, and removes hear-say and opinions from one person to another, and ensure that the integrity of C.A. is preserved the best way possible.

Over the last twelve months our subcommittees have been very busy. We held over a dozen PI Rocks Road show workshops, two PI summits, twice monthly connection calls in N. American.

The beginning of connection calls in Europe. Many mini workshops during the calls. Attending the All Rise conference. Directly leading to what you will see in the following video, what we will be presenting on the floor later and so much more. We have many projects in the still in works. Updating our guidelines, updating our guidelines, updating the PI members area, creating a guide for using live chat/text in addition to helplines, creating an internet search workshop and many other projects.

As stated previously, here is a video of some of the results of the committees’ activities.

5th Concept Statement:

As a member of a “special interest group” within Cocaine Anonymous, I feel a profound responsibility to voice my concerns regarding the motion to remove the ethnic diversity question from our survey. Witnessing the enthusiasm of individuals who saw themselves represented in our Public Information (PI) fact sheet was deeply moving, and I fear that not speaking up now would be a disservice to our fellowship.

The timing of this motion, coupled with the lateness of the conference and the exhaustion of a long day, in my belief that this issue may not have received the full and thoughtful debate it deserves. I understand that the question is already being excluded in countries where it is illegal, which makes the push to remove it from areas where it is legally permissible even more puzzling.

I was informed that the reasoning behind this motion is that the ethnic diversity question, being a “special interest group” question, could create a sense of exclusion and has reportedly discouraged some from participating in the survey. However, as someone who identifies as part of an ethnic minority, I see these questions not as exclusionary but as essential tools for inclusion. When I asked if the possibility of removing questions and/or outreach materials to the LGBTQIA+ community base on similar grounds, I was told that it could be considered. This raises further concerns about the potential erosion of the inclusivity that these questions foster.

Therefore, I respectfully and humbly ask that those who voted in favor of the motion to remove the ethnic diversity question reconsider their position. Let us ensure that this matter receives the thorough debate it warrants, so that our decision truly reflects the collective conscience of our fellowship.

Suggested Checklist:

Set a venue, date, and time for a committee forming/ steering meeting – inform your fellows of the date and time of the meeting and that a PI Committee is being formed
Hold the meeting (hopefully, others will turn up- if they don’t, don’t panic- PI outreach can still take place)

a. Vote in a Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Literature person. Other posts could include – Vice Chair, Outreach Coordinator, Web Servant, Hotline, etc.

b. Let your Area or District know that you have formed a new committee (if you have one), your new chairperson will form part of the Area or District Committee where ideas, enthusiasm, and solutions to challenges are shared. This also enables you to keep your Area or District informed about PI activities and opportunities.

c. Familiarize yourself with the traditions and service guidelines in the PI Handbook

d. Consider setting up a local Public Information email address so you can manage enquiries and media contacts. It is advised that you have multiple administrators for these accounts, so the responsibility is not left to one individual. This can be useful to protect anonymity when placing adverts and announcements in the local press

e. Plan your PI activities. You can get ideas for this from the section in this handbook on “Starting a Local PI Committee”

Our books are an effective way of getting our message out to the public. Many Areas/ Districts have successfully placed our books into public, university, and high school libraries. Some libraries may also be interested in a speaker presentation or literature rack or have a general information board where a CA poster or flyer could be di s played.

Our books and other literature are an effective way of getting our message out to the public. Ideas for book and literature placement include but are not limited to school libraries, treatment facilities, local probation and parole offices, community healthcare centers, coffee shops, lending libraries at your local meeting places and community centers in your area. Use the creative ideas from members in your District/Area to broaden this list. Some libraries, schools and community centers may also be interested in a speaker presentation, a literature rack or displaying one of our many posters. Our monthly PI Connection calls provide a wealth of ideas for book and literature placement.
