WORLD SERVICE OFFICE BOARD REPORT

INTRODUCTION AND OPENING COMMENTS:

Good evening, my name is Randy M and I’m a cocaine addict. I wish to express my gratitude to the World Service Office Board and World Service Board of Trustees for allowing me to serve the fellowship that saved my life. I would also like to thank former Chairman Tim A, for his leadership and dedicated service to the fellowship. I would also like to thank Frank P, our former WSOT and my personal service mentor, for giving me the courage to take the first step onto the conference floor. Thank you, Frank.

I am pleased to present to you tonight a full WSO Board! We have four (4) new members on our board, and they each bring unique and important qualities to our team. I am also excited to announce our first ever international Director at Large, Pierre K from South Africa! Unfortunately, personal reasons have prevented him from attending this conference, but he continues his efforts on behalf of the board and this fellowship. Many of you already know our newest member, David C, as a dedicated and trusted servant from the United Kingdom – our second international Director at Large. These two men will not only bring their unique and much-needed perspective to the board, but will also pave the way for continued international representation on your World Service Office Board. Rounding our new members are Secretary Brenda M and Ron D, Director at Large.

We’re all gathered here tonight to begin doing the annual business of Cocaine Anonymous. Each of you brings special abilities, ideas, and enthusiasm to this body. You are all, as my friend Bigfoot would say,”Uniquee!” You are the collective voice of the fellowship. This also carries a certain responsibility, as it is your duty to hold dear to the Traditions and Concepts of the program, to evaluate all of the available information, consult with each other, and ultimately determine the course of the next year for this fellowship. We face exciting challenges – moving forward in an increasingly electronic age, adapting to an expanding, worldwide fellowship, and most importantly, doing what is best for the still suffering addict. I know that each and every one of us

is up to this task. I pray that God’s blessings be upon this gathering, and that He gives strength and direction to us all.

REFERRALS THAT WERE WORKED ON DURING THE YEAR:

1. WSOB 2017 1 – CAWS Office Store –Please be sure that the Office is selling items in the CA Office Store during ALL days that the Conference is in session. It makes no sense to me and others here that the store is not open today (Saturday) since every delegate is here all day today. We missed some bi sales today. I know it was announced that the store would not be open, still, in my opinion, the store should be open today.
2. WSOB 2017 2 – CA Logo Stickers – That the WSO produce foreign language C.A. logo stickers for all of the established Areas of our Fellowship. We are a global fellowship. It seems a great oversight to have stickers available in English only.
3. WSOB 2017 3 – (Referred from Finance 2016 1) – Add or increase a line item amount to allow for the World Service Office to carry out translations of our World Service Manual for all Areas recognized by The World Service Conference that do not have English as

their first language. The amount to be adequate for said translation works to be carried out by the World Service Office without the requirement for participation of the individual Areas. The current number of required / outstanding translations to have adequate funding within the next two years and an ongoing line item to allow for newly required translations to be commenced immediately upon the recognition of a new Area.

4. WSOB 2017 4 – (Referred from LCF 2016) – That the Committee revise the Newcomer Booklet to include the reading “Who’s A CA. Member?” 

5. WSOB 2017 5 – (Referred from the WSBT) Please allow Areas to produce and distribute A. keyrings, medallions and Books under Royalty Agreement. 

6. WSOB 2017 6 – (Referral from IT 2016-1) – Digital delivery of Speaker Audio files – as we proceed in the digital world, and as more and more conventions are transitioning toward uploading digital files from workshops and speakers, should there not be a WS standard (bit rate, frequency, format, compression and production origin) for these files? Furthermore, is it possible to create on the CAWS site a file distribution system, or at least a link to a page, so that members worldwide can access the media as it is produced and posted?

8. WSOB 2017 7 – NADCP Funding – A Motion will be brought related to this SR14 Notice which will be addressed to both the WSC Finance Committee and the WSOB to cease (not fund) participation by C.A. World Service at the annual United States National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) Drug Court Conference; and only then reinstated thereafter if and when it can be substantiated that the significant funds which are being spent on C.A.’s participation each year provide an acceptable return on C.A.’s investment in terms of measurable results, including without limitation: the number of new meetings started directly after CA Drug Conference participation, new C.A. cities / states / countries colonized where there is little, if any, C.A. now, and judges and referees sending their people specifically to C.A (how many people were sent). 
9. WSOB 2017 8 – Best C.A. App – Have a contest to see who in the fellowship can make the best computer App. The creator of the winning App would get a designated prize, and all rights and ownership of the App would be turned over to the WSO. A contest of this nature would tap into the great technical skills that many of our members have as well as eventually providing much desired services to our entire fellowship. If an App was created for the meditation book, it could even help generate income for CAWS.

9. WSOB 2017 9 – Draft Publications Guidelines – Please consider adopting the attached draft Publication Guidelines (or something similar). (These Guidelines are available for review related to this Referral. Inquire to the Conference Committee for a copy please. These Guidelines are NOT attached here to this report.)

10. WSOB 2017 10 – Publication Information Repository – If this has not already been done, please consider creating a central repository for all information related to the publication of C.A.’s books. This would include source files (from original publishing software, where applicable, as well as PDF and / or “e-book” formats), lists of fonts types and sizes for each element of the book, cover art and colors, etc. Ideally, this information would be readily accessible to members of both Boards and backed up to multiple secure locations.

11. WSOB 2017 11 – Cost of Currency Exchange – The fellowship appears to be not informed regarding the cost of managing multiple currencies and converting to USD. Request that the WSOB Finance Committee monitor, record and report on the cost to the fellowship 2017 conference to 2018 conference of managing all financial matters in multiple currencies. 

13. WSOB 2018 01 – Translation Guidelines – I would like to refer the attached Translation Process document into conference for subsequent editing, approval and publishing wherever the conscience of the conference deems fit. It is designed to be fellowship-facing document as I am aware there is already an internal process document.
14. WSOB 2018 02 – Brand Style Guide Creation – Request the creation and publication of a brand style for our fellowship.

We are in the negative roughly $28,000 from the convention in Montreal. I have to say that. This is what we are going to be talking about in the finance committee, and what we can do in the future. If you have any questions, please ask me.

WSOB SECRETARY REPORT

I was elected to the World Service Office Board in July 2018. Prior to this opportunity I served on the CALA Board of Directors for four years as DAL, Vice Chair and Chair and termed out as Board Chair in June 2018. During my service on the WSOB I’ll primarily been involved with recording the minutes of the board’s action. Because of my 20 years as a Human Resources professional, I’ve volunteered to manage a few HR projects in the upcoming years. I’ve also volunteered to be the WSOB liaison to the WSC Convention Committee

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS REPORT

My name is Linda F, I am the Director of Operations for Cocaine Anonymous World Service Office (CAWSO) and I have one vote.

This is my eighth CAWS Conference and we are excited to return to this wonderful venue once again, the Sheraton Gateway! Also, I would like to thank you for the privilege of serving you while allowing me to continue to learn and grow. It is always my pleasure to work with many of you in different capacities and I look forward to meeting others for the first time. This is just one more incredible step in my journey of working with Cocaine Anonymous and the World Service Office.

1) Our office continues to serve you with a very small but extremely dedicated staff:

a) Although, all our staff is small we are able to get an amazing amount of work done.
b) “CAWSO is the business side of a 12-Step Recovery Program. We are responsible for making sure that you have chips, metal coins, literature (over 24 pamphlets along with other publications), books and tons of other miscellaneous items

available to all our Regions, Areas, Districts and Meetings throughout the world.”

2) Please remind our Fellowship to use our Website?

ii) Ask questions and/or ask to be included in their upcoming meetings

c) You can set yourself up to make either one time or reoccurring donations! – You will hear more about this from the Finance Committee!

d) We encourage everyone to use the Online Store when placing their orders

i) – as it is easy and

ii) You can select your choice of payment: of sending a check, using a debit or credit card and now you can even pay using PayPal.

e) Even at Conference – We are open for Business: If you wish to place an order from the warehouse to be delivered to the Hotel on Friday – Please turn in your order form by 1 pm on Thursday.

i) However, if you wish to place an order to be shipped home…you can give me your order any time you see me.

ii) The WSO Store was open earlier this afternoon (Who got some shopping in?) and will only be open Thursday from Noon to 8 pm, and Friday from 10 am to 7 pm (Being closed from 2p – 4p for lunch) – so please plan to shop early and often! The WSO Store will not be available on Saturday or Sunday!

3) CAWSO continues to work on Translation projects…

a) Currently we have chips translated into 9 languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, and Farsi.

b) Our HFC II – available in 4 languages: English, French, Swedish and German

c) We are currently working to get “A Quiet Peace” translated into French, Swedish and German.

d) Royalty Agreements allow us to offer “Print on Demand” to have our pamphlets available in several languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, South Africa and Farsi

e) Our work continues with local groups to get as much of our literature translated in all languages to continue to help the addict that still suffers.

4) Under the careful eye of our Trustees, we continue to work with our trademark attorney to be sure we stay current with all our trademarks, registrations and licenses.

5) Our relationship with the Volunteer Center continues to provide us with volunteer help for both the office and the warehouse.

6) This year the National Association of Drug Court Professional (NADCP) at the Houston Convention Center, Houston, TX, May 30 – June, 2018

a) Members of PI Committee worked to reach out to the folks from all over the world…I will let them report.

b) Drug court continues to be exciting and continues to be more productive each year.

c) Next year – NADCP 24^st Annual Training Conference will be back at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor, MD July 14-17, 2019.

7) We have been very busy this year helping new meetings get started. 69 Starter Kits have been sent out from the World Service Office as well as local areas around the world since January of this year. (and we still have 4 months to go!) Yahoo!

a) 57 in the United States to 25 different states.

b) 5 in Canada to 3 different Provinces

c) 2 Inmate Starter Kits

d) 5 to other countries including Brazil, England, Switzerland and Turkey

8) Working with the H & I Committee – we have sent out 27 inmate kits (to 12 different facilities), 2 Inmate Starter Kits and 5 H & I Outreach (Rehab) Kits. We continue to work as a fellowship to help to the addict that still suffers.

9) The WSOB and I wish to acknowledge and thank the Atlantic North Region for hosting 2018 CAWS Convention in Montreal, Quebec. Who was there! A good time…right!

a) A special thanks to the Convention Chair; steering and general committee members in addition to all volunteers who helped put together this wonderful

event. “Celebrate C.A. without Borders” in Montreal was truly a fun and exciting event that played “outside of the box” at every meeting, every entertainment event, and everywhere you looked! Yes, I admit it – their Count Down was truly amazing! Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you to everyone who worked very hard to provide a truly memorable convention experience!

10) Are you ready for “The Stockholm Syndrome” – for our next July Convention for 2019?
Mark your calendars today for Thursday, July 4^th – Sunday, July 8^th 2019. The CAWS 2019 Convention Chair and Committees are very busy planning many wonderful new and exciting events to make your Swedish experience one of a kind! Boat rides to a Viking Village, a trip to the ABBA Museum, and fun at the Zoo – this will be fun, fun, fun! With a great Hotel selected and many wonderful activities this committee will make your visit to Stockholm, Sweden one that will keep you wanting to “keep coming back!” We are looking forward to being with you in Stockholm 2019.

a) Registrations are open on the ca.org website…and it is listed in US Dollars.

11) 2020 CAWS Convention in Austin, TX…Get your “groovy on” as we will be traveling to Texas’s Music City! The Chair and her committee are working to put all the pieces together for a “dang good time in Texas”. Expect the unexpected and an amazing good time! Their hotel has been selected and they are working to put together a dynamite committee and program to be truly unforgettable!

12) 2021 CAWS Convention in New York City, New York …Be sure to put this location on your calendar! This is truly an amazing destination. You will be able to visit all the great spots in all parts of New York. This is truly a must plan to attend! The Chair and his committees are already working to make this an event – one not to be missed!

2022 – You will have an opportunity to help select the next Convention Destination!

NEWSGRAM EDITOR REPORT

Over and above being sober, the most precious gift I receive from C.A. is to be of service. It is my pleasure to serve as your NewsGram Editor. I took this position last year, and I would like to thank Heidi J., for her mentoring; she showed me the way and supported me all along, and to Susan B. for being the associate editor and bearing with me. They also help in bringing articles and proofing each edition, along with Linda F., WSO Director of Operations. We also have the support of George M. our NewsGram Trustee.

This year we received articles from Germany, Sweden, Quebec and Ontario, Canada, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas and Utah, USA. We also received articles from Archive, Finance, H&I and Unity WSC committees and finally from WSO and WSBT.

We also had our first non-English article published! We are really getting international.

Our biggest challenge has been to receive your articles in a timely manner. It takes about 2 months to complete an edition, from gathering data (articles, updating information) editing articles, building a draft copy, proofing and then having it approved by the WSOB and finally to the WSBT, where they check it for Tradition violations and then back to WSO for printing and distribution. So, we really need your support and your articles. You, as Delegates and WSC Committees chairs are our main channel for this.

Most importantly, the NewsGram is YOUR publication! We need your input on what you’d like to see changed, added, taken out, articles or topics you’d like to see, etc.

You can now upload your article and complete the release form directly through the ca.org website. You can still use snail mail or email.

In closing, I would like to share this dream to publish a special edition of the NewsGram with an article from each area of C.A. in your own language. Are you up for this?

Its purpose is to be both informational and inspirational, and to help foster a sense of unity throughout our increasingly diverse worldwide Fellowship. The NewsGram should keep the Fellowship informed about upcoming C.A. events, important developments occurring at the World Service Conference, and significant actions taken by the World Service Board of Trustees and World Service Office Board. CLOSING COMMENTS

Your World Service Office Board is ready to take on the challenges we face. We encourage you all to get to know us, to ask for our help, and to help us with ideas and inspiration. For it is only by working together as a team, this collective World Service Conference of Cocaine Anonymous, that we can do the important and difficult work we have ahead of us.

Trevor S: Any questions for the committee?

Patrice F: What is the difference between an inmate kit and an inmate starter kit?

Linda F: The kit differences depend on what is in the letter requesting what they want. We can send them some literature, or we can send them sobriety bookmarks and so forth to assist them to have an organized meeting vs information just for themselves.

Jon H: In regards to sources of income, is that 47% combined from product and income? (referring to the pie chart in the Treasurer Report)

Allison M: Just product sales, chips. At the time the slide was created, we were trying to gather information about the Convention. That income is not shown on this chart.

Patrice F: When somebody sends in more than one article for the NewsGram, do they have to sign a release each time, or will one release do?

Yves W: Once we have it on file we can use the same release form for multiple articles by the same contributor.

Rose J: Question for Linda, did I hear you say we will be able to do the S.M.A.R.T. donation here at the conference?

Linda F: The reoccurring one? Yes! Go to ca.org and go to contribution button, and select one time or recurring.

Marshall S: With regards to the one-week chip, was this production approved and was this discussed at conference?

Randy M: My understanding is that only the concept was approved at conference, however final approval was not received from conference for production, some chips were made and are available as samples.

Henry A: Inquiry referring to the Dutch translation, has been dropped?

Randy M: It is still in the hands of the Dutch translators, once it comes back, it will go to our third party before final approval. We will be following the translation guidelines to completion.

Trevor S: We will move forward

Stu E: Question regarding policy to notify corresponding area for the starter kits that are sent out to?

Randy M: There is a process to notify that respective area when starter kits are requested.

Herman L: Treasurer, Can you be a little more specific on the miscellaneous income?

Allison M: Royalties and stuff like that.

Jackie R: Linda, you mentioned drug court and NADCP 24^th training conference? Can you explain this event?

Linda F: NADCP is an event we have been taking part of for long before I came, I am not sure when they started, this gives us an opportunity to speak with judges, probation officers and court system representatives to know of ca and provides us an opportunity to talk to these people and follow up by each respective area. Our participation in this event yields more activity in areas with Drug Court Representatives and starter kit requests.

Dawn M: To the treasurer; did I hear you correctly that there is a $28,000 deficit, and what is the contingency plan based the impact, and what are the future plans from what happened in Montreal?

Randy M: With respect with what happened, we will go through the budget respectively. We do know that the lack of hotel bookings contributed to this deficit and the forensic is important. The budget will get us through the shortfall we are experiencing, and use our lessons learned with Stockholm. We are working on changes to adjust for it.

Susan B: I would like to piggyback on Stu’s comment with more and more information questions; such as verification, if we have that information, could that info of the starter kit be sent to that area chair and trustee when the kits are mailed out to keep an eye on the new meetings.

Trevor D: According to our policy the regional trustees are notified, any deviation would have to go into a referral.
