INTRODUCTION AND OPENING COMMENTS

Opening Comments:

The Literature, Chips, & Formats (LCF) Committee has had an extremely productive year leading up to and during the breakout session. We’re pleased to have brought the Fellowship the newly published pamphlet, “Honesty, Open-mindedness, & Willingness,” and the 1-Week chip. As is evident in the below motions, our members have continued to work diligently in bringing a significant number of items for approval or revision. These motions result from your referrals, suggestions from the Fellowship, and from our collective experience as expressed through the LCF Committee’s Group Conscience.

Today we seek your approval, as per the LCF Pamphlet Approval Process, to advance three (3) new draft pamphlets toward publishing. We also bring motions for approving and making available the draft “Suggested Business Meeting Format” and an update to our LCF Committee Guidelines. Additionally, we bring forward additional motions for new concepts, as well as some changes to existing materials/concepts. Please refer to our current LCF Guidelines, provided on Box, which serve as a guide and may aid in providing answers to questions you may have about how our committee’s approval and publishing processes work.

Perhaps to create a new pamphlet instead. The pamphlet to create a new meeting does not include online meetings. To put information in a book that is subject to change seems like a waste of time and money because the information will be outdated in time.

Cynthia C. – I speak in favour of this motion – can you believe it’s been 12 years since HFC2 rolled out? What we decided is that it is easier to have a literature section within the book. It is prudent to align with the decision in 2010 to be included in the book at this time. In terms of updating books, we can do so much in house. We are about to do another printing of HFC, we are close to print. We wanted to include the floor in this decision. This is the 3rd printing. E-books are almost immediate in updating.

Claudia W. – I speak against this motion. There is no way to translate this and keep up with the changes as they come. The literature should come in a pamphlet. We could have an HFC3 to include the new stories as we grow.

Deloris B. – I would like to make a Friendly Amendment. Why change it if it works?

Justin C. – I have the same question. I am new to book process and I may defer to long standing LCF members. We have an advantage and access to all this material. We have the literature racks and pamphlets online. What about the addicts in jail or in treatment that do not have online access? What they have are hardcopy books. We are reaching much wider with spiritual documents as a result of this motion.

Our history must stand. We need to create NEW literature in order to assist H&I in listing these things. We are trying to rewrite history here and respectfully I speak against this motion.

Audz C. – I have a question – What is the cost in re issuing these books? Cynthia C. – The cost to create e-books is minimal and I am unaware of the hardcopy cost at this time.

Heidi J. – I speak in favour of this motion – I have the original copy of this book. The history is preserved and the old copies are still out there. People in institutions need to have these books updated so that they can use these books for inside meetings etc.

Cynthia C. – I speak in favour of this motion. None of the stories have changed. Heidi has made my points as well. Pamphlets are for addicts in our meetings. What about people in institutions and professionals that could use this information have access to our books?

Jason L. – I have a question – I go to book studies because it can be a lot of fun but we don’t update that book. We have HFC1 and HFC2, and we need to create an HFC3. Why do these pamphlets need to be in HFC’s?

We have had problems with large volumes of books sitting in storage.

How many copies do we have in storage and how many copies of HFC2 vs HFC1 have sold?

Trevor S. – Does the committee have an answer? Cynthia C. – The Director of Operations will answer

Linda F. – The warehouse was filled with 7 pallets of HFC2 and 5 pallets of HFC1. We just caught up with HFC1. They were caught up with conference approved changes in the past few years. We have 2 cases left of HFC2. We had to create a US version and an overseas version. we have 2 cases of out of country, and a pallet of HFC2 and a pallet of a Quiet Peace.

Jason L. – How many copies of HFC have sold over the last year? Trevor S. – Linda does not have an answer off the top of her head. Claudia W. – I speak against this motion. Our message is to the addict who still suffers. HFC is about identification, just as we do with the big book. If we convolute our message via the book with pamphlets, we are diluting the message. Point of Order – this has not been reviewed by the finance committee.

Simonne M. – I speak in favour of this motion, Prior to being incarcerated I got this book from my sponsor and it was the only connection I had to our fellowship. It allowed me to have meetings in the prison yard.

Linda F. – HFC has 40, but we rebox them at 24, HFC2 is 24 and Quiet Peace is 28.

Paul S. – I speak in favour. In support of tradition 5, the more information we can provide to the newcomer and how the program works, and how to get in touch with CA, is crucial.

Melanie VR – I speak in favour of this motion. Coming from a smaller area this information was fantastic for us to have access to. and Having this available to newcomers is great.

Leslie R. – I speak in favour – coming from a new fellowship in Thailand it was great to have this information and carry this message even into the other fellowships. The more information we can put into our publications, the better. We are a tourist destination and people can

take our books and take them back home and carry our message, the complete message, to the rest of the world. This is tremendous for international growth.

Jason L. – I speak against this motion. I’ve asked how many books were sold and the office cannot tell me. I suspect it is a small amount. The books are outdated and the stories are not current. I would rather we had updated books and stories for inclusion. It was a great book but why are we continuing to update it? If we vote to update the book, the office will print a ton more books. We should not if we do not know the cost involved in this process. Why update an old book?

Michael C. – I speak in favour of this motion. 10 years ago a friend of mine in detox was bored and I brought her this book. Staff recognized this book in her possession and they brought more in. We share our message through this book.

Dawn M. – I know how challenging this is for the committee. I speak against it. This is a full package of information regarding finances, numbers, funding. What we have decided to do is put this information into a book that has a cost associated to it. Newcomers may not be able to afford this publication and it should perhaps be in a free publication instead.

It also helps clarify that there is more than 1 volume. There are no changes with the original book. We need to respect the offices authority regarding print and finances. The big book is sold now as Edition 4 and that’s it. Edition 3 is no longer available for sale. Leave our history alone.

Justin C. – What we found was the original referral or concept was similar to a referral from last conference which was asking to create a mini WSM, which failed at that time. When this was brought forward it was almost identical to the S&B motion, we felt that taking and changing a spiritual document would not be a good idea so we removed this project.

Jason L. – Thank you. I find this interesting that you stopped your project because S&B stopped their project. It was voted in for your committee to work on it, rather than bring it to this floor in order to stop it. It would be useful to have for groups to have a mini version of the WSM.

Justin C. – I take issue with being accused of not creating a pamphlet just for the sake of not wanting to do it.

I am going to be brief about these floor times and the debates that are incredibly heavy and repetitive while still only representing in favor positions, and still 20 people behind them. If you are standing there and see no hands, be aware that you may release the floodgates. Be considerate of our incredibly valuable floor time. 2. LCF 2019-3 from Lucas S. Southern Alberta Area: To create a pamphlet called “Our Common Welfare”

The pamphlet idea is to empower our membership with the importance and obligation of Tradition 1 and properly teach how to use the rest of the traditions to properly deal with membership issues.

The long form of tradition 1 states “Each member of Alcoholics Anonymous is but a small part of a great whole. A.A. must continue to live or most of us will surely die. Hence our common welfare comes first. But individual welfare follows close afterwards.”

This tradition tells us that no individual is more important than the welfare of C.A. as a whole. I believe that as a fellowship we are unable or unaware of how to protect this tradition and protect our meeting spaces and fellowship.

My concept of this pamphlet is not to dictate how everyone should act but to enlighten our membership of the importance of protecting the fellowship as a whole and empower our membership to take action and protect the fellowship through our trusted servants and our group conscience.

The pertinent information I would like to see included in this is:

-Tradition one states that our common welfare comes first. This means that if someone is harming the group we have an obligation and a right to ask that person to leave; this would be a last resort. We could include suggestions on how to go about dealing with membership prior to asking someone to leave (talking to the person, warning the person, etc.). If a person is stealing from the church and the church has said

that they will no longer rent us space to hold our meeting because of the theft we absolutely need to act on this as the welfare of the individual should not cost the group the ability to host that meeting and continue to help the rest of the suffering addicts that have not had the opportunity to reach that room.

-Tradition 2 talks about our group conscience. A decision to remove a member from a group or a meeting should never be done by an individual conscience; it should always be done by a group conscience.

-Tradition 3 states that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind altering substances. This tradition tells me that we cannot remove someone from C.A. as a whole and that if that member comes back and asks to be allowed back in we are obligated to hold another group conscience for reinstatement.

-Tradition 4 states that each C.A. group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or C.A. as a whole. In short the referral is part of measures to reduce the Fellowships financial dependency on CAWS Conventions through better awareness of Tradition 7 and how the funds are helping the addict who is still suffering. We are aware of the good pamphlet on this subject but feel a reading card would have a much greater reach and increase Tradition 7 income across the whole Fellowship.

By the Grace of God I have been a member of CAUK for over 8 years and am celebrating 6 years clean. I sponsor a number of men in

recovery and many share their frustration at not receiving a chip between 90 days and 6 months, 6 months and 9 months, and 9 months and 1 year.

AA for many years has given chips for every month increment of sobriety up to 1 year. In fact I know a number of members who go to an AA meeting just to get their next month’s chip.

In line with Tradition One – Our personal recovery depends upon CA Unity. The Unity of our fellowship is underpinned by our newest members and so we grow. By helping them to celebrate and acknowledge the miracles of their recovery we continue to promote unity within our fellowship. Rather than having members attend other fellowships to receive the aforementioned monthly chips.

In line with Tradition 3- The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using. Anything that CA can do which promotes the ongoing desire to carry out Step 1 on a daily basis and allow people to continue to remain sober should be encouraged.

It would be trite of me to suggest that people stay sober JUST to receive these chips, but I have had so many men and women share with me their frustration of not getting say a 4 month chip. If having chips available for all months up to 1 year is enough to keep 1 addict

sober and also demonstrate to newcomers in the room that recovery is possible. I feel this is a worthy cause.

Plus, with the addition of the 7 day Chip, I see no reason why we cannot extend this to cover the aforementioned 1 month increments above as surely the same logic still holds. I would suggest that rather than asking why should we do this, the question should be what reason is there for not doing this? Particularly if it is carried out by AA.

Research informs the WSOB Ad Hoc that the new chips would be very popular with much of the fellowship, a fact supported by the substantial sales of the ‘One Week’ chip brought out last year. History.

The original version of this Anonymity Statement was written by folks from Waltham Abbey in North East London, as a counter balance to the sycophantic “Who you see here, what you hear here, let it stay here” which seems to be a conflict for members who believe in taking what they’ve learnt at a meeting and then carrying that message further on in another meeting i.e. carrying the message.

It became popular around meetings in London and Central UK Areas. I suspect that it’s been used further afield too. I know we’ve been introducing it into Thailand.

The LCF Committee has made significant progress over the past year leading up to and, and during the breakout session. Over the past year we’ve received a total of seventeen (17) referrals and have added several items to our project chart which, we hope, will soon be available to the Fellowship. As we move into a new working year, we are focused upon doing our very best to honor our commitment in providing our beloved Fellowship, and the public, with materials that manifest our primary purpose and properly reflect the expression of the group conscience of this Conference.

This year we’ve welcomed several new members aboard who bring fresh ideas, energy, and an enthusiastic willingness to be of service. We’ve also seen at this Conference the return to LCF of many of our valued members from years past, who’ve answered the call to service and are bringing their extensive and valuable experience to helm our book projects, which are moving forward with renewed vigor. It is truly an honor for me to be right in the middle of all of you, because I know that when I’m there there’s no danger of me falling off the edge.

Ian Y. – I am a long standing supporter of LCF, I submitted a referral around an additional reading that addresses the anonymity statement, as I have seen it misinterpreted in cities around the world. I found a piece of literature that was manifested in London which beautifully describes an additional aspect of anonymity in the fellowship. I submitted it with the intention for it to be available to all, at the world level. This document is more from a spiritual, rather than a technical standpoint. The response I received was that it was allowed at a member level, and then was redirected to the WSM restating the concept, roughly, of the 11th Tradition, and I do not agree that the literature in existence satisfies my request, and would ask that the literature be reconsidered by the LCFcommittee.
