A couple of things, first, sorry for getting the agenda out late, thanks to the Board for their patience. Also, regarding the timely “action/calling” of online motions, I will do what I need to do to keep things moving. I apologize… this is a tough job…appreciate everyone’s patience…Will try to be more attentive to the position of chair.

The spending request for the centerpieces has gone to the office, as well as the speaker slate for approval. The budget for the speakers has also been submitted.

clarification for the local fellowship re: who the fundraising is for. May consider whether or not to hold a local and World convention in the same year. Banking questions are coming forward with WSO and 2010. Looking at options for banks. Hopefully by the first of the year there will be a banking solution. Jackie is questioning how to fund travel for to general committee meetings. WSO is reviewing this.

“Regarding anonymity as it relates to Facebook , Twitter and other social networking styled sites; it seems that our guiding principles are still our best resource on this matter, even though they were written before the Internet existed. After all, the Twelve Traditions were formulated

before television existed, and yet the language of the Eleventh Tradition was flexible enough to adapt that change without need for revision. It would seem that applies in the case of the Internet. Generally, most members of CA would agree that the Internet falls into the category of “press, radio, and films” as mentioned in the Eleventh Tradition.
Regarding the CA members themselves who create such groups or post pictures of recovery events, we have not pursued them for these matters related to our traditions. However, individual members are encouraged to attempt to raise others’ awareness of our traditions.
As it relates to issues of trademark; We need to be mindful that the CA Fellowship has determined that individuals (including CA members) do not have the ability to use CA’s registered trademarks. These include the name “Cocaine Anonymous” or any of the CA Fellowship’s logos. We would ask all CA members to respect the group conscience of the fellowship and refrain from posting CA trademarks and logos.”

Thank you for your question regarding your use of the C.A. logo on Facebook.
The C.A. logo is the registered trademark of CAWSO and Cocaine Anonymous.
There was an article just published in the 3rd Quarter News Gram that addresses the concerns of the usage of any of our trademarked logo or mottos.
“RESPECTING THE C.A. LOGO, MOTTO and TRADEMARKS” by the World Service Board of Trustees
As the WSBT continues to address concerns over the use of our copyrighted logo, motto, and trademarks on web pages and websites, as well as anonymity issues for those connected to the web page/website, we felt that an article regarding the position of the WSBT was warranted.
Most questions/concerns have to do with what our protected trademarks are, what is acceptable and appropriate use of them, and by whom they may be used. Cocaine Anonymous has the following trademarks protected in the USA, Canada and European Union:
“We’re Here and We’re Free”
Cocaine Anonymous name
C.A. logo Hope, Faith and Courage
C.A. (USA and Canada only)
If a C.A. group wishes to use any of the above C.A. trademarks on the C.A. group’s website, the service committee for the Area (or District) must have approved the site, and the Cocaine Anonymous World Service Office (CAWSO) must be contacted
by an elected officer of the Area (or District) where the group resides with a statement to this effect. If a C.A. group chooses to be a “stand alone,” meaning not attached to the Area (or District) where the group resides, then the Cocaine Anonymous World Service Office (CAWSO) must be contacted by an elected officer of the group with a statement to

this effect. In either of the above cases, the request is forwarded to the CAWSO Web servant, Regional Trustee, Area/District Service Committee and World Service Conference Information Technology (IT) Committee to verify that the site is in compliance with the IT Committee Workbook and Guidelines (these guidelines are available for review on the service section of www.ca.org).
In accordance with the above, the use of the C.A. logo and our protected trademarks on Facebook, MySpace, and other similar sites is not appropriate, or acceptable. Additionally we need always be mindful regarding the anonymity of our members, even when they “innocently” are not. Also, we need to be cautious as to how the public may perceive this web page and how the website represents Cocaine Anonymous as a whole.
And lastly, as guardians of the Twelve Traditions, and concerned members that stand behind the effective voice of the Fellowship as directed through the C.A. World Service Manual, we need to further educate our Fellowship as to the potential harms this web page might have. To elaborate, we refer to the following Traditions:
Tradition 6: A C.A. group ought never endorse, finance or lend the C.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property or prestige divert us from our primary purpose.
Tradition 10: Cocaine Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the C.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.
Tradition 11: Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, television and films.
Tradition 12: Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.
The WSBT’s position is that the use of the C.A. logo and our protected trademarks on unauthorized web pages/websites is not within the Traditions, and we are concerned as to the interpretation of possible affiliation, endorsement, controversy, and overall anonymity.
Additionally, we are guided by the long form of the Fourth Tradition, which provides in part: “And no group, regional committee, or individual should ever take any action that might greatly affect [C.A.] as a whole without conferring with the trustees … On such issues our common welfare is paramount.” Also in the narrative text of the Fourth Tradition (Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, page 147), the inquiry seems to turn to whether the action taken would/might “greatly” injure C.A. as a whole. In that same paragraph is the notion that for the group, “Sobriety had to be its sole objective. In all other respects there was perfect freedom of will and action. Every group had the right to be wrong.” We trust that individuals and/or groups who may launch a page on the internet using the C.A. logo and/or its protected trademarks have done so without intent to harm or desire to injure C.A., or the membership/Fellowship. As we attempt to educate the Fellowship, we refer to our “Statement of Policy,” stated below, from the C.A.

World Service Manual, 2009 edition, page 13, that sets forth specifically who can and who can’t use our registered trademarks, etc.:
STATEMENT OF POLICY
Who may use the name “COCAINE ANONYMOUS,” the block letters “C.A.”, the official COCAINE ANONYMOUS LOGO (hereinafter “logo”), future variations of the logo, the book title “HOPE, FAITH & COURAGE: STORIES FROM THE FELLOWSHIP OF COCAINE ANONYMOUS,” and the motto “WE’RE
HERE AND WE’RE FREE”:
A. A Cocaine Anonymous “Group” as defined herein, for its function of organizing and operating a regularly scheduled C.A. meeting. A C.A. Group may not use the name, letters or logo for any other purpose (including without limitation, dances, conventions, memorabilia, or fund-raising events) without the prior written consent of its Area/District Chairperson after a vote taken by the Area/District Service Committee.
B. A Cocaine Anonymous “District,” “Area,” or “Region.”
C. Cocaine Anonymous World Service Office, Inc. (a California corporation) and Cocaine Anonymous World Services, Inc. (a California corporation). The service body granting the use of the C.A. logo shall be responsible for ensuring that the proper C.A. logo, with applicable trademarks as shown below, is used on printed materials and memorabilia.
No other individual or entity may use the name “COCAINE ANONYMOUS”, the block letters “C.A.,” the official COCAINE ANONYMOUS LOGO (hereinafter “logo”), future variations of the logo, the book title “HOPE, FAITH & COURAGE: STORIES FROM THE FELLOWSHIP OF COCAINE ANONYMOUS,” and/or the motto “WE’RE HERE AND WE’RE FREE” without the written permission of the Cocaine Anonymous World Service Board of Trustees. Cocaine Anonymous groups, meetings and service committees should only use, display, distribute or sell the following literature and materials: the WSC-Approved Literature set forth in the Appendix, the books “ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS,” “TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS,” and “The A.A. Service Manual, combined with the 12 Concepts For World Service,” and Cocaine Anonymous World Service, Region, Area, District and group/meeting approved flyers, meeting directories and other materials displaying the C.A. logo as described above.
The WSBT feels that the manual is clear on who can use the service marks and for what purposes. Anything outside of that is a violation. Our position in the future will remain as stated above, and in our attempt to protect our Traditions, we will be working with the World Service Internet Technologies Committee to contact those in violation, encourage them to willingly remove the C.A. logo, the Cocaine Anonymous name, C.A. motto, and any service marks on the page. If no satisfactory outcome is reached, The WSBT will then set forth correspondence that will involve a “cease and desist” letter. In all cases, we have faith that with the proper understanding of the Traditions and the World Service manual, there will be a positive outcome.

In-Conference Referrals to be addressed: Update at December Quarterly

We currently have a line item in the budget that pays for the trustee banquet dinner at the world convention. I have been told by the trustees that this is part of their job description. It is for appearance reasons and the WSOB feels they should be present. I am also told that the members of the WSOB also receive the same. They are not announced or present at the meal so who would know they come out of there. Banquet meals are expensive ($50-60) and for the majority of the fellowship who can not afford or choose not to pay for an expensive meal like this. This is not a situation where we as a fellowship should foot the bill for this. I think there are better ways to use the fellowships money.

Create a trustee manual. Every other committee has a manual or more detailed information. I think it would help the fellowship better understand what the trustees do and how they do it.

The election procedure for electing trustees is not transparent. It happens in secrecy behind closed doors with members not allowed to attend. Why is this? Why can’t we echo the process in AA and described in their manual?

What do we say to members who say (and enforce in their group) that you need to be a cocaine user to be allowed to share or hold a service function?

Comment for Delegate
This new reading “who is a cocaine member” in the long term is going to harmful to the fellowship, the reading can imply changes too at least 3 of our traditions the 1st, 3rd and 5th. It says we are not a drug specific program (fellowship) without primary purpose we will try and do too much and in the long run that won’t be helpful. If a new or old member can’t relate and has to translate to our stories our fellowship will not be strong because no one will recover and the fellowship will die as a consequence.
It might seems like semantics however we do not have to water down (dummy down) our primary purpose for anyone. It’s not one or the other (drugs or alcohol) it’s the combination that makes our fellowship strong. The suffering addict who can’t relate and has to translate when he or she walks into a room of cocaine anonymous won’t stay, our experience shows us that. Is that not how and why cocaine anonymous was started because of primary purpose in another fellowship would not allow us to also talk about the drugs in our stories.
The last paragraph states with its all inclusive 3rd & 1st tradition it says that we welcome anyone with a drug or alcohol problem, the 1st & 3rd tradition clearly States “T/ie only requirement for C.A. membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances & We admitted we were powerless over cocaine and all other mind-altering substances – that our lives had become unmanageable ”
An open meeting all are welcome friends, family and press just to name a few, however in a closed meeting not following the 1st 3rd and 5th tradition we will be lost and the fellowship will die.
1st tradition: Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon C.A. unity

Dear Gary,
Thank you for your question regarding advertising Cocaine Anonymous events in public locations, such as medical clinics, libraries, etc.
The issue is what is okay to advertise under the Public Information banner, and what is best left out. The first order is to look at what the Public Information guidelines say. Page 6 of the PI Workbook gives us the following description. “The purpose of the Public Information Committee is to carry the message of Cocaine Anonymous to the still suffering addict. We achieve this by making our presence known to the person, community groups and interested parties affected by drug addiction. We also have the task of keeping our own fellowship members informed and up-to-date (on the changes) with respect to Cocaine Anonymous.” On page 7, it goes on to list some of the methods we can use, such as word of mouth, letter writing, billboards, newsletters, mailings, and the like. Conventions and events are indeed listed as some of the functions we may advertise. Our main goal is to let people know we exist, and to help the still suffering addict find recovery.
It is important, however, to remember a few things. The first is the importance of personal anonymity. We should never list our full names on any advertising for the fellowship. It may also be prudent to use the local District/Area phone number rather than a personal phone number. Also, the WSO supplied disclaimer regarding the C.A. logo should be included as part of the format. As well, the 6th Tradition disclaimer regarding our not being affiliated with any outside aspect of the event, including location, needs to be listed. In fact, it is recommended that the location name be kept out entirely, where possible, instead listing it as simply restaurant, church, community center, hotel, etc. at the address provided.
Something else to bear in mind is the importance of our trusted servants fulfilling their roles. As with any gathering of the fellowship, occasionally members or outsiders may exhibit undesirable behavior. We need to take great care in dealing with these situations, always showing love and tolerance to all. Whether at a C.A. meeting, dance, or other event we need to remember we are trying to carry the message to anyone who wants it. Anyone inhibiting that can be kindly asked to conduct themselves accordingly, or be removed from the premises.

2009.10.05 – t-shirt idea for 2011 (Arizona) – Randy – UPDATE on line/December Quarterly
- Randy: I have been sent the t-shirt layout for the “worldly indeed” t shirt as one of the pre-convention fund raising items that could possibly be sold off the website, as well as locally. Terry has spent many hours with folks from all over verifying the translations and I will have all the documentation given to me tomorrow night as to that translation effort. As this item tip toes

over to effecting CA as a whole – the 2011 steering committee, WSOB chair and I believe it prudent to get the Trustees approval prior to submitting it to the WSO for financial approval. It’s a very powerful message and could be something that would take off. As of today, I have receive the German translation…we can replace the English one with the German one.
