Message: Today (13-09-08) our district (south central district) held a unity day organized by groups in an outlying part of our district. The event was well attended and supported by not only our local fellowship but also the area as an whole.
The event consisted of several speaker meetings held in a privately hired function room of an hotel. Whilst the event was sold as an open event the speaker meetings themselves were closed – meaning that members with children could not attend (no creche facilities) I believe it was confusing for the event to be half open and half closed and quite exclusive for those members with children.
This is a side issue to the one I am most concerned about though. The area archivist was taking photos from the back of the meeting of the chairs even though before the start of each meeting the anonymity and convention press statements were read

out.
The archivist was also taking photos of the fellowship enjoying the barbeque and events outside as well. I heard it commented that some of these pictures would be being put on face book accounts and it was said that the local CA fellowship actually had a face book account (I don’t know whether this was a joke or not)
I spoke to the archivist about my concerns over the photo taking and he told me he would not be using any full face pictures unless permission was obtained from the people pictured. I told him that I was very concerned for the confidence of the addict that really valued his/her anonymity and how a newcomer might feel with all these photos being taken, how would they understand and how safe would they feel? I put it to him that if for example there was a newcomer or even oldtimer that was a celebrity, professional, business person or simply a quiet
family member this may make them feel insecure and fearful to the point of not wanting to stick around in our fellowship and find the freedom we have. He continued to take photos. I will continue this referral on a separate form.

Message: The last event was in the evening and this was a standard format speaker / share back meeting. The speaker started the meeting by announcing that 2 members of the committee would be taking photos of everyone at the meeting and anyone not wishing to be photographed should get up and stand out of the photo, and out of the meeting.
It did not sit right with me for this to be going on so I followed my conscience and stepped out. I was the only member to do this and felt quite singled out (my stuff I know!) As there were 2 people taking photo’s and everyone was sat in a circle and lots of photo’s were being taken and the secretary was carrying on with the meeting it was not clear when I could rejoin I walked away and for the first time in 2 1/2 years of sobriety in CA I felt exluded from my fellowship. I reflected on tradition 3 – 11 – 12 – 5 – and 1 I think in that order – I prayed and sought guidance from other CA members – the chair of our district a nd our European trustee and last but by no means least my sponsor!
The last advised that I should ask the board of trustees for guidance – and so I ask the question does all this violate traditions and if so what would your recommendations be?
I realize this is short notice but we do have a district meeting this coming Sunday so if you could respond to this request before then I think this could greatly help our fellowship.

The WSBT appreciates you bringing this concern to the attention of the entire Board to review and comment upon. The issue you have presented centers on the matter of anonymity at a District Unity day event of CA, namely a member or members taking photographs at a CA event.
In looking into this matter, we refer to the entire set of CA Traditions, the CA World Service Manual, as well as the writings in the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. We have also referenced certain of Bill W.’s early writings on the subject of anonymity.
On page 192 of the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions are the long form of Traditions 11 and 12 as follows:
11.—Our relations with the general public should be characterized by personal anonymity. We think A.A. ought to avoid sensational advertising. Our names and pictures as A.A. members ought not to be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed. Our public relations should be guided by the principle of attraction rather than promotion. There is never need to praise ourselves. We feel it better to let our friends recommend us.
12.—And finally, we of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance. It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a genuine humility. This to the end that our great blessings may never spoil us; that we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.
Under the literal interpretation of these two Traditions alone, the photos are problematic. First, under Tradition 11, there is a prohibition of having pictures of our members publicly printed. They could end up outside of the confines of the fellowship itself; and further could conceivably find its way to the internet as more and more information does via – social networks ( Facebook etc )
Even private pictures of CA members would be afoul of this Tradition because, as the narrative of the Tradition so clearly indicates on page 183: “…emphasizing personal anonymity [is] A.A.’s greatest protection.”
Continuing on page 187: “it is more than a denial o f self seeking. This tradition is a constant reminder that personal ambition has no place in A.A. In it each member becomes an active guardian of our fellowship.
As to the principle of anonymity in Tradition 12, in the text and in the long form, the language there encourages the need to place principles before personalities and to practice “genuine humility.” The use of pictures of any m ember goes squarely against the spirit of this Tradition. Page 192 reads ….” We are sure humility, expressed by anonymity, is the greatest safeguard that Alcoholics Anonymous can ever have.”
On pages 182 and 183 of the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions is a very clear explanation of the development of A.A.’s long-standing tradition of anonymity at any public level. There, it was explained, that the press of America thought the anonymity of
- was better for A.A. than its own members did. What had occurred in that instance was that many early members were choosing to break anonymity at the public level. As the text indicates:
With perfectly good intent, these folks declared that the principle of anonymity was horse-and-buggy stuff, something appropriate to A.A.’s pioneering days. They were sure that A.A. could go faster and farther if it availed itself of modern publicity methods….Provided they were willing – and may were – why shouldn’t their membership be publicized, thereby encouraging others to join us? These were plausible arguments, but happily our friends of the writing professions disagreed with them.
And, on page 185 of the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions is the following quote:
Squarely before us was the question: “How anonymous should an A.A. member be? Our growth made it plain that we couldn’t be a secret society, but it was equally plain that we couldn’t be a vaudeville circuit, either. The charting of a safe path between these extremes took a long time.”
In fact, we, in CA, are continuing to chart that path as new challenges are presented related to the internet and other methods of media and information dissemination are developed which could not have been contemplated when the Traditions were crafted. We share this because it is entirely possible that the picture might find its way to the internet or into the public domain locally, as has occurred in some of the service areas within our fellowship.
Two early Grapevine articles are also most insightful. The first, an unsigned editorial from November 1951 provides the following explanation:
AA tradition enters the picture only when the ‘anonymity’ break goes beyond the personal level….The di fference, of course, is

foundation (of all of our Traditions). For it is the spirit of anonymity that is all important
We note also, that our own publication The Newsgram, copies of which are available on the ca.org website, and at our meetings, contain the first names and last initials of members of both the WSBT and the WSOB. There have never been pictures of any members in this publication.
We have referenced the Fourth Tradition which provides that “Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or CA as a whole.” Pictures may affect other groups, districts, areas or CA as a whole and as should not be on websites / newsletters / notice boards or any other place where they may seen by anyone.
We close with a quote again from the Twelve by Twelve:
Over the years every conceivable deviation from our Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions has been tried. That was sure to be, since we are so largely a band of ego-driven individualists. Children of chaos, we have defiantly played with every brand of fire, only to emerge unharmed and, we think, wiser. These very deviations created a vast process of trial and error, which, under the grace of God, has brought us to where we stand today. (Page 146)

Referral #5632
Self Test for Addiction
Members have expressed concern regarding the cocaine specific nature of the ‘Self Test for Addiction’ questionnaire on the CAUK website. In line with being a non-drug specific fellowship we would like to remove the word ‘Cocaine’ and substitute with the word ‘Drug or Drugs’.
Please see below for the questions concerned…
Are we able to make such changes at a local level and simply remove the ‘Approved Literature’ statement?

- Have you ever experienced sinus problems or nosebleeds due to cocaine use?
- Do you ever wish that you had never taken that first line, hit, or injection of cocaine?

- Do you have an obsession to get cocaine when you don’t have it?
- Are you experiencing financial difficulties due to your cocaine use?
- Do you experience an anticipation high just knowing you are about to use cocaine?

Thank you for your inquiry to the WSBT.
As we move forward, as individuals, and as a fellowship, we are faced with many challenges. One of the big ones of late, is language in our readings. With the broad scope of substances in the world today, many feel that the use of any wording which specifically defines our using to be out of touch. There is a call to be more inclusive, and not mention any specific drug by name. We, as members of the WSBT, hear these calls.
The language used in all our literature, however, is something that represents the fellowship as a whole. There is a process in place to write, edit, and publish all Cocaine Anonymous literature. The LCF Committee works very hard throughout the year to serve the needs of the fellowship. They are the ones tasked to carry out all of our literature needs. Many hours go into creating even the shortest piece of literature.
That being said, one of the challenges is to keep the language in our publications current. Over the past few years, the LCF Committee has had many referrals dealing with language in our work. They continue to redraft conference approved pieces to bring them into line with our current fellowship. This to is a process. Once a piece is rewritten, they must submit it to the World service Conference for approval before publication. The fellowship as a whole must approve it before it becomes available.
The answer to the question raised regarding changing literature can be directly found in the World Service Manual. Our second concept “The C.A. Groups delegate to the World Service Conference the complete authority for the active maintenance of our world services and thereby make the Conference — excepting for any change in the Twelve Traditions — the actual voice and the effective conscience for our whole Fellowship.” tells us that our fellowships direction is taken from the conference. All important decisions are discussed, and voted on during that time. As members, we must be mindful that decisions reached at the conference are the voice of our entire fellowship. We should do our utmost to support those decisions, and the work that it creates. Our First Tradition: “Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon C.A. unity.” reminds us of our need to always place unity first. The CA message needs to be spread, but we all must carry the same message. It would not be appropriate for any entity to change any literature, in any way, regardless of removing the conference approved statement or not. Any changes to our CA copyrighted literature affects the unity of our fellowship worldwide. Any individual or group, is, however, encouraged to submit a referral to the LCF Committee with suggestions on possible improvements to any piece of literature. Your local Area delegates, or your Regional Trustee, can help in this process.

Kevin, thank you for your unsolicited humble opinion, not that I have to defend or explain my position on this, but please note that there are no limitations on who can attend – ALL ARE WELCOME to become members of the group and attend the meeting on a regular basis, especially the newcomers, no one is restricting membership nor violating tradition 3, however, just like the format in almost every other CA meeting in the

Los Angeles area reads, “please do not share if you have had any drugs or alcohol in the last 24 hours.” – is this not a limitation on sharing?? This new meeting will have the same type of format for sharing in the meeting. Per traditions 2 and 4, we have every right to have the format the way we want it. Since you have not seen the format, nor attended the meeting since it has not even happened yet, don’t you think it’s a little premature for an opinion about it? After we run through the format at the first meeting, we will open the floor for discussion on any changes to the format, and it will be decided by group conscience, per tradition 2. Please give us chance to work it out before the “CA police” gets involved. There have already been some suggestions to allow the last 10 minutes for newcomers, etc, etc. Like I said, LEAVE US ALONE and let us (the group conscience) work it out.
Further, the South Central District had a meeting called 10 and up for many many years which had the same type of format. Also, the format of this new meeting, along with its name is taken directly from AA, which has this same meeting in Santa Monica every night of the week, and has done so for over 20 years. Surely if there were any tradition violations as you seem to think, AA would have figured that out and not have allowed such a format to go on for over 20 years.
This is the reason why there are over 150 different meetings in the CALA area, if you do not like the idea, concept or format of this meeting, please do not come, you have the option to go elsewhere. Furthermore, I did my homework and showed the format to the regional trustee Before putting the meeting in place, and there was no problem with it per the trustee. I also ran it by former trustees and other long time service members like Leon Strange and Stan Jackson, and they saw no problem with it either.
I do not want to debate or argue this with you, but just out of curiosity, please tell me in particular, 1) how this meeting would affect other groups or CA as a whole??? 2) How this concept puts additional “requirements” for “membership” of the fellowship on anyone?? (Think Kevin, it DOES NOT) 3) how the primary purpose of the group in “carrying its message to the addict who still suffers” would be affected?? (in fact, this would be a very powerful way to carry its message to the newcomers who choose to attend this meeting!!) 4) How would tradition 12 be violated??? Also, per the 6 points required for a CA Group, which ones are not being met??? (None of them as far as I can see).
Finally, the meeting is not requesting accreditation, nor participation at the district with a GSR, nor to be put into the CA directory. So, with that being said, you are welcome to take it wherever you need to with YHO, But the meeting is going to happen, whether you agree with it or not. However, to appease you, I will take the logo off the flyer and stop promoting it within the fellowship. But again, why not take a look at the actual format before forming such a strong opinion with no facts and “contempt prior to investigation.”
Take it to the board of trustees if you like. When I hear it from them, I’ll think about doing something different.

As I understand this, your new meeting intends to exclude or limit participation by some CA members, based on their length of sobriety. I must tell you that I find the idea repugnant and a violation of Traditions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 12. But more importantly, it violates World Service’s only Rule, defining when a “meeting” becomes a “CA Group.”
Page 14 of the CA World Service Manual lists six requirements for a “meeting” to refer to itself as a “CA Group” All these points must be met.
“A meeting may call itself a C.A. Group when:
- The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances.
- It is fully self-supporting.
- Its primary purpose is to help addicts recover through the Twelve Steps of C.A.
- It has no outside affiliations.
- It has no opinion on outside issues.
- Its public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion.”
You are imposing an additional requirement on attendance and/or participation at this meeting, namely a sobriety requirement. IMHO, this places your meeting outside the requirements for a CA Group. Therefore, you should not call your group “CA”, nor should you use the CA logo at meetings or on fliers, ask for inclusion in the directory of
CA Groups, nor expect the District to seat a GSR. While this is solely my opinion, it is based upon 20 years of CA service work. I am expressing this opinion to you privately in hopes that you will see the light and I will not be obligated to express it more widely.
Nothing in CA’s Traditions, however, would prevent you from having speakers with 10 years or more, but imposing limits on who can attend or participate pretty much flies in the face of everything CA and AA have stood for since 1935.

the “Life After Ten” meeting of Cocaine Anonymous will be starting on Sunday, September 28th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Share Center in Culver City. This will be a “closed” speaker/participation meeting

There will be a few commitments open and I am hoping some of you Oldtimers will step up and volunteer to take them.

Thank you for passing on your email correspondence regarding the formation of a potential CA meeting.
The PSRT Joy H. has forwarded the email correspondences to the WSBT for further review and response.
We are not too certain that there is any need for input from the WSBT in regards to this meeting as you have stated that you are not looking to be recognized as a CA meeting, requesting accreditation, nor wishing to participate a the district with a GSR, nor be included in the CA directory. Furthermore, you have indicated that you have removed the CA logo from your flyer, and are no longer attempting to attract members of the CA fellowship to this meeting. If this is the case, then we wish you well, and hope that in the future you will be willing to start a CA meeting per the CA World Service Manual (pages 16-18, Definition of Cocaine Anonymous “Groups”). If on the other hand you are looking to establish a CA meeting, the WSBT would like to first thank you for your desire to continue to carry the message of Cocaine Anonymous. Next we would like to stress the need to follow the CA World Service Manual, the CA 12 Traditions, and lastly remain open-minded to the needs of our fellowship. We suggest that you have regular business meetings to address the concerns of the group and those attending the meeting, also attempt to incorporate a group inventory quarterly to maintain the integrity of the purpose and importance of the group. We also suggest a review of the following traditions: Tradition One: “Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends on CA unity”, Tradition Two: “For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience”, and Tradition 3: The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances.
Also keep in mind the true spirit of the group as stated on page 16 of the CA World Service Manual (2008 edition): “A meeting is when two or more people gather toget her to share their experience, strength, and hope with each other”. Most addicts in CA achieve and sustain their recovery as a result of their participation in the activities of the Group. The Group is the heart of Cocaine Anonymous and it is vital to the new member. It is equally important to those who have achieved recovery as a result of the program. Maintenance of our recovery depends on the sharing of our experiences, strength and hope with each other.”
In closing, we hope that your meeting has much success and that you will consider the above and look to establish it as a CA meeting per the CAWS Manual.

The World Service Trustee on a quarterly basis receives a Trademark Portfolio status report through the World Service Office from an outside legal firm researched by their international associates. This report is forward to the WSBT legal subcommittee for review.
If it comes to CAWS attention either through this report or some CA member’s correspondence that an entity either CA or Non-CA is in violation of our trademark agreement a notice is sent to the violator to stop using the service mark(s) without CAWS approval. After a 30 day period of time if the violation continues another notice is sent with intent of legal action. Usually the violation stops but, if it doesn’t stop then the legal firm is requested to take action to correct violation.

- Regarding the business about the new transcriber, the Chair polled the board as to handling the confirmation of Yvette to the position/job of transcriber by unanimous consent. Board accepted unanimous consent. Yvette was ratified. The Chair will speak with her regarding the high importance of responsibility, privacy, and confidentiality.
Niki has been doing the transcribing of WSBT and B2B minutes for over a year now. She will complete and forward the August minutes soon.

Since her life has gotten busier with the new baby she will be stepping down from these duties. I have asked her to send the transcribing hardware back to the office after she completes the August minutes. I have contacted Yvette a local fellowship member to take on these duties at the same rate of pay which is $250.00.
Since Yvette lives local there will not be a charge to ship the equipment and the CD with the notes for both meetings. I would like to know your thoughts or other recommendation. (Hayward)

She has been well informed about her responsibilities and duties.
She thanks all of us for the opportunity.
Also sent an email to Niki about forwarding the minutes as soon as possible and returning the equipment to the WSO. I also thanked her for the great job that she did.
She just wanted it noted that some of the trustees need to speak up to be heard on the recorder that’s why it takes so long to complete them.

Cocaine Anonymous has the following trademarks protected in the USA, Canada and European Union.

CA logo Hope, Faith and Courage
C.A. (USA and Canada only)
If a C.A. group wishes to use any of the above C.A. trademarks on the C.A. group’s website, The Service Committee for the Area (or District) must have approved the site, and the Cocaine Anonymous World Service Office (CAWSO) must be contacted by an elected officer of the Area (or District) where the group resides with a statement to this effect.
If a C.A. group chooses to be stand alone meaning not attached to the Area (or District) where the group resides then the Cocaine Anonymous World Service Office (CAWSO) must be contacted by an elected officer of the group with a statement to this effect.
In either of the cases above that request is forward to the CAWSO Webservant, Regional Trustee, Area/District Service Committee and World Service Conference Information Technology (IT) Committee

to verify that the site is in compliance with the Information Technology (IT) Committee Workbook and Guidelines, these guidelines are available for review on the service section of www.ca.org.
