Comments:

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Southwest Regional Trustee. This first year has flown by so fast. Finding balance and learning has been the key for me this year. The year took off like a bucking bronco as the Colorado Area was going through growing pains. I serve on the WSBT Sub-committees-TNC, TEC, and Finance. For Conference committees, I serve as lead on S&B and second on Convention. Of the nine areas in my regional I have visited 6 this year. I have the 2018 Regional Convention hosted by North Texas Area (Dallas) which needs my immediate attention and 2020 World Service Convention in Austin, Texas in which I attend the Steering Team meetings. All I can say is that I love it very much! I have to agree with an ex-Trustee who told me that I have the best damn job in the world! I look forward to growing, learning and the challenges of year two.

Like all new commitments this has been a time of learning and discovery. In previous roles, I have seen how World Service functions at my local area, then as a Delegate, a Committee Chair, an Office Board Director, and as a Conference Parliamentarian and Chair. Each role shows the same processes in a new light from a new perspective. This time is no different. But by now, I’ve learned to expect that. It’s what the Spirit of Rotation is all about.

What I have seen, as part of the 5 new Trustees — half the Board — is the ability of 10 people coming from very different perspectives to attack difficult problems, and moving from 10 voices to one. It’s not always easy, it’s sometimes passionate, but it is never hostile or personal. We seem to be at a place of mutual respect and trust that I’ve not always seen in service. Quite refershing

actually. Sometimes it seems like things take too long, but it’s quite spiritual when the discussion is done and we have our concensus. And I say that as someone who has “lost” more often than “won.” Sometimes listening is the most important thing to do.

In my role I have two Boards and two Chairs and sometimes find myself between two conflicting Group Consciousnesses. Since the boards meet separately most of the year, it can be difficult to meld the consensus and convey all the reasons why each board made the choices it did. It is one of those things you only learn by doing, then doing better next time.

But, like any other position of service, it is all “for fun and for free.” For admittedly strange values of “fun.” I want to thank the Conference and my two Boards for giving me this opportunity to grow.

I would like to thank thunkasila, the principals of this program and the members of the fellowship for allowing me to be of service. My Job title says that I should be in the purest sense, a servant to the entire Fellowship. As I reflect back over the last 5 years only time will tell if I fulfilled that duty. I now know in my heart every decision I participated in and action I took was in the best interest of the fellowship at that time.

I would like to thank all the previous trustees for showing me what to do and what not to do. A special thanks to Yves for your endless dedication to this fellowship, your researching ability and our nightly decompression walks. You will be a friend for life.

We as a fellowship are growing not only in Europe but the quarterly reports from north America show many Areas are showing expansion on this side of the pond. I would like to thank Europe for showing the fellowship that enthusiasm can lead to growth.

Many people have asked, what will I do next? Become a greeter, I truly believe we only have one opportunity to welcome someone new to our fellowship. It is that first meeting that we can give them some hope. That there is a solution and they can find it in Cocaine Anonymous.

It was a tremendous pleasure, and just a little nerve-wracking, to come onboard in my first year as the Pacific North Regional Trustee just a few months shy of the region hosting our greatest event of the year, CAWS 2017, in Seattle, Washington. I joined a very dedicated and well-established group of members throughout the region and the fellowship as a whole, and I was welcomed onboard enthusiastically. All the regional members, the various committees, both boards, and the World Service Office worked together to host an excellent 33rd Annual C.A. World Service Convention! This was a definite highlight of the past year, but there have also been many other amazing experiences along the way! Greetings,

I would like to take a moment and thank each one of you for your confidence in me. I am still in shock! I could not even imagine this in my wildest sober dreams, but here I am. I am excited to embark on this journey to assist the fellowship of CA, the fellowship that has saved my life. To give back and to be of service at this level is the guiding light in my personal recovery. I am truly blessed. I am now learning my new position and finding my way. I was told when I started this trustee position to find my voice, well I think I have found it.

When I started as a Trustee I was scared. I thought to myself, what could I possibly give to the fellowship? What could I do to improve the Board of -Trustees? Do I even know what I am doing?

The answer to all those questions were, “I did not know”. I was like a deer stuck in the headlights, trying to figure out how I got there. Sometimes I just stop, and laugh at God, because he has such a sense of humor. I was asked to submit a resume because they needed a slate. I had no intention of becoming the next World Service Trustee, but God saw different.

Now that I am a Trustee, I see that God had already prepared me for this spiritual journey. When I started reviewing the many contracts I suddenly remembered, I was prepared. I had visited many hotels while on the site selection committee for a convention. I remembered comparing all those contracts, looking at the cost of F & B, cost of room nights, coffee, or any other incentive the hotels would use to entice us. At that moment, I knew that me being on the Board of Trustees was not a coincident or a mistake.

Now that I am here, I will do my best to serve the fellowship I crave. My hope and prayer is to leave the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous in a better place than when I got here. When I got here, this fellowship offered me hope if I was willing to follow a few simple rules. That is what I want to offer as well, HOPE. Hope that this fellowship will grow and flourish. Hope that we will continue to attract the next suffering addict to our fellowship: Cocaine Anonymous. I love this fellowship and I thank God for the opportunity to serve.

Thank you Cocaine Anonymous for entrusting me to sit on this board and assist with the oversight of the welfare of our Fellowship. I continue to be in awe at the level of dedication and commitments our members so selflessly serve. I am humbled to work with you.

I’ve had the pleasure of a few ‘spiritual experiences’ this past year. I could speak for hours about the work the PI committee has done this past year at both Summits I attended first in Colorado, Springs and later in L.ians, Scotland. Attending the L.ians District’s first ever C.A. Convention where handwritten signs adorned the entryway to the convention area and young new members flocked to hear the message of recovery. Having sandwiches and cookies for dinner at the Saturday night banquet was absolutely amazing and the fellowship was spiritually incredible. Next, A car trip North to Flint Michigan with the husband and our furry son provided time for reflection and a test in patience. And, finally, being Spoonless in Seattle where a late night train ride for dinner after a full day of tending the business of C.A. with our trustee board took me out of my comfort space as it was late and involved walking for blocks.

I continue to be mentored by our present board as well as past board members and I’m truly grateful to be a very small part of what I see as a new era in Cocaine Anonymous.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for being here with us this week. I am aware of the huge sacrifice every single person in this room has made to be here, to participate, and to serve the Fellowship which has saved our lives; and to preserve it and keep it safe for those who follow in our footsteps now and in the future.

Service at this level demands our time, our energy, our resources and our devotion. It demands the understanding of family, employers, employees and co-workers. It demands endless explanations to our loved ones that even though we are going to LA for several days, we most likely won’t see the beach or Disneyland. As John F. Kennedy so eloquently put it, “For those to whom much is given, much is required.”

The Fellowship has given me my life. A life free from the pain and horror of addiction. It is truly an honor to be in the service of CA, and to be a part of this process where we all come together in the collective pursuit of bringing the spiritual side and the business side of our Fellowship together. To experience a Loving God as he expresses Himself in our Group conscience sends chill bumps down my spine. To experience the Traditions and Concepts in action, and watch them come alive on the conference floor and in committee, continues to be a thrill.

I’m looking forward to the next few days ahead where ideas will be exchanged, fears will be brought to the surface, and faith will be revealed one vote at a time.

It is my 5th and last Conference as the Atlantic North regional trustee, and I cherished every moment in this capacity. It has been an overwhelming privilege to be of service to my fellow’s addicts from my Region and for C.A.

I would like to say a special thank you to Rob who is rotating out with me this year. He has been my roommate, my walking mate, a sounding board and a friend. Thank you for sharing these 5 years with me.

It was an honor for me this year, to serve as the Chair for the WSBT, I do thank the board for their support and confidence. We had 5 new members this year and It was amazing to see them taking charge, sharing the load and being active on the board that fast.

I was fortunate to be part of the ER PI Summit this year and I was impressed with the success and experience of Public Information within the European region. We have a lot to learn from them. CAWS 2017 Convention was for me a resounding success, thank you Seattle for your commitment and warm welcome.

Our region is in good health, and Quebec area is excited and working hard to be ready to host the world at CAWS 2018 Convention from June 28 to July 2, 2018, to “Celebrate C.A. without Frontiers, Célébrez C.A. Sans Frontières.”

I feel that our fellowship is strong and healthy and where it need to be, carrying our message of hope, faith and courage one addict at a time.

We very much appreciate you reaching out to us and allowing us the time we needed to review your request. As a Board, we have come to the consensus that you may use the name Cocaine Anonymous in your book as outlined in your request.

Our permission is contingent on the following criteria being met to avoid implied affiliation, when referencing the name Cocaine Anonymous and/or the block letter C.A., the following disclaimer should be used: “In the spirit of Tradition Six, C.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution.”

Subject: Request to print HFCII German translation in Germany
Dear trustees,
I hope this email finds you well and buzzing.
SUMMARY
I am writing to ask if we can take a new direction with the translation process, in particular translation of HFCII/German. I would like to propose printing here on the grounds in Frankfurt.
We had a final manuscript August 2016 and it should have been no problem getting the book into print for our upcoming German C.A. event in May. As it turns out, sadly we still are not ready to print.
When our European trustee Suzanne originally asked if we – German area – wanted to print in Germany, we said no, thinking we would not have the people to manage the business process with a printer.

We now changed our mind because we now have a C.A. member with over one year recovery, sponsored and active in H&I, who is a graphic designer and has the professional expertise to guide us and work for us. The experience with the layout carried out in the U.S. showed that a non- German speaker working on this project is a “single point of failure”, leading to errors and delays. And of course, not having to pay shipping can only save C.A. money in the long run.

BACKGROUND

I would like to recap the process so far. My hope is that we can note our lessons learned and maybe develop more efficiency at carrying the message in foreign languages in the future.

1. In 2014, our area submitted parts of HFCII for approval and after revision by Kern, we had a final translation of the 12 steps, the 12 traditions, the suggested meeting format including the texts we read in C.A. meetings, such as “Who is a cocaine addict?”, “Who is a member?” and “Reaching out”. These core translations were carried out with extreme care and consideration as we wanted to be sure no little diversions from the message creep in. We had lively, thorough discussions and took our time to consider Kern’s suggested changes. When we wrote back to WSO, we gave our reasoning why we did or did not accept some of Kern’s suggested changes, always bearing in mind that we want to carry the C.A. recovery message and keep it clear of any lofty academic ideas a linguist may have about how things should be said.
2. March 2016 we submitted the full German HFCII manuscript, marked the texts that were already approved in red and attached a glossary of terms based on this previous approval. The terms in the glossary needed to be binding for Kern.
3. When the manuscript came back to me with Kern’s suggested changes, I was shocked. They had edited the texts marked in red – so we paid for this service twice and it was now necessary for me to edit backwards to come back to the previously approved text version. I also had to edit backwards the changes they suggested for direct quotes from the Big Book. They had not taken the glossary into account. They made some truly ridiculous suggestions for change, such as “attend gatherings” instead of “go to a meeting”, “my consumption of drugs” instead of “my using”, “graduate from the steps” instead of “work the steps”. In a few instances, Kern had tried to “polish up” the language into grammatically correct written Oxford English, making it sound like no addict would ever talk that way. They clearly misunderstood the disease concept and in a few places suggested a change that revealed their misconception that recovery is about not picking up the first drug. The Kern person who had proofread in 2014 had done a much better job, I now wish we had asked for her to do it again.
4. So I realized that accepting or rejecting suggested changes would be a major effort. I dedicated a week of annual leave in August 2016 to it and sent the finished manuscript to CAWSO.
5. In the fall 2016 (I think it was October), I hadn’t heard back from Linda and checked with her where the printing process was now? To which she replied that nothing had been done and she now could not find the manuscript. Would I please re-send it.
6. I re-sent the manuscript and again heard nothing for a while.

7. February 2017, I emailed Linda to ask if everything was running ok? Can I go ahead and plan a PI event for the book launch at the Unity Day in May? Would not want to risk inviting press etc and then having no book…. She replied that she is working on a timing leading up to delivery date May, should be fine.

8. March 2017, I get an email from Linda asking me to read over the layout real quick, then waited for the layout a couple of weeks. When I looked at it, I found dozens of errors just at a quick glance. The errors occurred because she ended up cutting and pasting a lot, because she needed to adjust margins.

9. April 2017, our German literature secretary Silke read the fully layouted book and found one and a half pages twice in the middle (just to amuse you, she found several little errors, one of them a missing letter “G”, which turned “God” into “od”.) So we would have to takethose out, correct page numbers for the rest of the book and proofread again… and no chance will the book be here for our Unity Day event. Thank God I had listened to my inner voice in February that said wait to invite professionals for a book launch pi event until you hold the book in your hands!

At this point, we strongly prefer to print in Germany, if the board of trustees gives us permission. I really hope you will consider this. I have lost confidence that with Linda as the main layout person we are coming to a satisfactory result and, frankly, I am not really willing to labor through more rounds of proofreading.

PROPOSAL

Could the following work out?

1. Our non-profit organization “CA Deutschland Service-Center e.V.” signs an agreement with CAWSO to be granted permission to print the German translation of HFCII, between 200 and 500 copies. Being the director, I could legally sign the paperwork.
2. The by-laws of “CA Deutschland Service-Center e.V.” state this organization serves the singular purpose of supporting C.A. recovery by taking care of admin, banking and literature, referring to ca.org. The by-laws also state that only trusted servants of C.A. Germany at area level can be members of this organization.
3. German C.A. area pays for layout and print costs, distributes the books and pays royalties to world service for each copy sold. We have been holding back donations to world to have funds for book order, so we have those financial resources. We should send 20 copies to CAWSO so you have them as well.

4. Be aware that we would need to adjust the paper size minimally to German industry standards. While the original measures 8.5 inches x 5.5 inches, the German would have 8.3 inches x 5.8 inches. Is that a problem?
5. Specifics might be:

• German Area pays layouting (our C.A. member would layout in InDesign and we pay her for this as a professional service; her rate is reasonable, 35€ per hour) and printing; I do not yet have quotes but I expect it to be around 3 € per book
• German Area sends 40 copies to World Service at our expenses o 10.99 USD = 10.50 EUR is the sales price for one copy
