PUBLIC INFORMATION REPORT
INTRODUCTION AND OPENING COMMENTS
Good Day from the Public Information Committee. The Committee worked on a number of referrals during the breakout sessions. And although no referrals resulted in motions to“ be made before” this body, the Sub-Committees have completed substantial
Housekeeping items and gave each referral the time and consideration it deserved. I’m happy to report that the Survey Sub-Committee, with the help of the entire PI Committee has finished tabulating the results of the 2003 surveys! The updated PI Fact File will be in your next Delegate mailing.
Also, we’ve uncovered some old conference-approved artwork in the form of bumper stickers, posters and PSAs that can be adapted with your local information. We hope to have these available to you soon for your Area and District needs.
We have made copies of the current PI Workbook and Fact File with the hope that you will familiarize yourself with them and let us know how we can help you help the addict who still suffers.

Bob Lemon- These bumper stickers, can also be made as billboards!! The Billboard Company will put them up and not charge for the space.
They also can go on buses. The price is just the price of producing the material, the space is free.

REFERRALS THAT RESULTED IN MOTIONS
None
REFERRALS OR ITEMS TABLED UNTIL NEXT YEAR; AND ITEMS THE COMMITTEE WILL CONTINUE WORKING ON THROUGH THE YEAR:
REFERRAL NUMBER 4486
“That the PI Committee draft a “How to Begin” PI plan in consideration of a new area to add to PI Workbook”. Also, please consider formulating 1, 3, & 5 year plans for implementation.
The PI Committee is going to work over the next year to develop a Public Information Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) sheet. The FAQ Sheet would provide a quick reference to the most commonly asked PI questions. This committee feels the implementation of a 1, 3 & 5 year plan is not under the scope of this committee.
REFERRALS OR ITEMS REFERRED TO OTHER COMMITTEES; WORLD SERVICE OFFICE, OR BOARD OF TRUSTEES
REFERRAL NUMBER 4527
“Having been a member of CA for almost 8 years, currently, there is no PI or LCF document to help the non-addict understand what is CA (NA, AA & others have seen
Page 88 of 108
such a document). The following document was approved and used at the PSR 2001 convention which was also suggested but not approved for the SPR 2003. Because such a document was not CAWSC approved,” it was not used and need not be used only for a convention piece, check it out.
This referral was transferred to the LCF Committee.
REFERRALS THAT DID NOT RESULT IN MOTIONS
REFERRAL NUMBER 4485
“That the PI Committee Budget up to $2,500.00 to” have one or more approved PSAs interpreted for television in English and Spanish.
The committee decided to take no action on this referral because PSAs are already available in Spanish. Please see the Public Information Merchandise Order Form which is included in the Public Information Fact File and Workbook as well as available for download on the ca.org website.
REFERRAL NUMBER 4487
“That the PI Committee adopt” the slogan “Recovering the Addiction Since 1982” as the basis for a 2005 campaign.
The committee stated that no action should be taken on this referral as the PI Committee does not create campaigns at this time.
REFERRAL NUMBER 4488
“That the list of CAWS Conventions, their cities and themes, be added to the Fact File.”
The committee decided to take no action as we do not feel the information assists in spreading the message of Recovery. It is not the purpose of the Fact File to show extensive CA History but to show CA demographical information.
REFERRAL NUMBER 4520
“To create a form letter and send it out to responsible TV shows such as Dr. Phil & Oprah for example. Informing these shows that CA is an option and has” been proven to be very helpful to men and women who have a problem with cocaine.
The committee is taking no action on this referral as there are already letters in the PI Workbook on pages 23 & 33 that can be used for this purpose.
REFERRAL NUMBER 4521
“To create a letter that could be sent out to movie producers and directors and television producers and directors to thank them when they mention CA or show our literature or book in their movies or television shows.
The committee is taking no action on this referral as there is already a letter in the PI Workbook on page 29 that can be used for this purpose.
REFERRAL NUMBER 4548
“I was wondering why the PSAs only talk about cocaine, but in none of them did I see the PSAs talk about and all other mind altering substances, why is that and do we need to update them?
The committee decided no action needs to be taken on this referral. The author was referred to the PI Workbook, Preface, page ii, final paragraph, final sentence.
REFERRAL NUMBER 4555
“Red Ribbon Week,” this is an’ even held in schools, grade K-12. It’s an entire week devoted to drug awareness. I d like to see P.I. be able to go into schools to educate our youth on the real life effects of drugs and the impact on their lives. Of course, it should be age appropriate, and approved by the school districts. You may see the importance” of this when you consider how young you wee when drugs were introduced to you.
The committee is taking no action on this referral. Area members can already go into local schools for PI work. There is also a letter in the PI Workbook on page 23 for initiating contact within the educational community.

Questions
Eric Rosene- Do we know how many PSAs are out and being played.
Billy Humphries- No we do not have a figure on that.
Nick Alexander- I wrote 4548 and I understand what you did and“…how you did that, but I think you misunderstood” my referral. None of these reference .And all other mind altering substances. It was all cocaine except a little crack.
Billy Humphries- We are going to look at that. These are old PSAs
John Bernadone- Have you considered eliminating the bumper sticker that refers to Cocaine addiction as slavery.
Billy Humphries – Yes , we will pull that and we may . We were just trying to show you some examples.
John Whittaker- I see in the referrals you are telling everyone what is available, and having the WSO close is great but. Is the PI committee working on anything that is on a national scale?
Billy Humphries- Yes, we have talked with Patty about that and we do have some national PSAs already . We would be happy to have any input you would give us.
Vinny Martin- As far as the national level, some of that came down to it that it was not in our scope.
Olonzo Mitchell – What about these numbers on here?
Billy Humphries – You can have your number put on them yourself.
Mike Sklar- We are running the PSA right now and we are getting good results.
Billboards are expensive.
Tom Rublusky- Where is the best place to get access to these tools?
Tad Smith- All the PSAs have a space where you fill out your information. In the billboard art, there is room on the template just put it on before printing.
Kelley Colvin- I didn’t see Yves on your list of international, but what are we doing to get our international friends help ?
Jackie Schickler’– The consensus was that PI was for everyone and that International committee s alienate rather than unify.
Michael Chiki- Are the radio PSAs available online.
Billy Humphries – No not at this time.
Bob Lemon- I wonder if you would like to remind the fellowship about phone lines Could you remind them also that if you do not have a back up all your money may be lost, if it gets taken down .
Billy Humphries- Sure we would be happy to remind the fellowship.
