LCF received 18 new referrals this year. There are currently 23 other literature projects that are “works in progress.” All progress in this committee is as a result of some dedicated, hard-working committee members who have given of their time, talents and long-serving efforts at the conference and throughout the year.

It has been a productive year during which much of our discussion and voting on literature pieces took place via our email groups as well as telephone conference calls. We have also had pretty excellent communication with the WSOB and WSBT.

This has meant we have been able to accomplish a great deal of work.

We are also proud to present our new flyer “Shhhhh Meditate on this” (attached) asking for submissions for our proposed Meditation book. In this attachment, you will get a glimpse of the format we are working on for the Meditation book.

Two new pieces and the new storybook structure were sent out this year in the July delegate mailing for review. Drafts for new pieces and revisions of current literature continue to develop. Collection of materials for new projects continues. As a result of referrals and input from the fellowship, new concepts continue to be added to the list of work in progress. It remains an exciting process as each member of this committee is able to contribute to the publication of the message of Cocaine Anonymous.

Regarding our new Hope, Faith & Courage Volume II, we received 40+ new stories for evaluation. From over 200 received from the 5 calls for submission, we now have 19 already approved by the WSBT and 6 to be evaluated to complete our roster.

The LCF TIMELINE (attached) is a guide for our continued committee work for 2005-2006. Incorporated into this timeline are specific deadline dates for the Storybook Subcommittee progress. This timeline serves to keep us on track and move the literature projects through the current approval process.

We anticipate communication to continue via email, online groups, mail and phone and we will utilize our budget as efficiently and frugally as possible to accomplish our goals.

Alcohol is a mind-altering chemical in liquid form. Many people don’t realize that it is no different from cocaine, marijuana, painkillers or tranquilizers in its ability to lead to addiction. One drink is never enough, just as one hit, fix, pill or snort is never enough. We are masters at combining and substituting one drug for another to get high. Many of us never felt that alcohol was part of our problem. However, take away the drug of choice, substitute another, and eventually it becomes a problem drug.”

Kevin Murphy – What is the 5^th Concept:

#3993 – What can we do to protect the 5th Concept statement on the floor, if anything?

Bill W’s writing on the Fifth Concept are clear setting forth the importance of Fifth Concept Appeals and Petitions. However, we as a Board have witnessed the possible abuse and overreaching of this Concept on the Conference Floor. We also support the Conference Chair’s right to control both the timing and content of all activities occurring during Conference sessions.

However, in an effort to support the sanctity of Conference floor time and to keep the Conference focused on the matters before it, we will request that the Conference Chair read the following during his/her opening remarks on the first day of the Conference each year:

Our fellowship has had a long history of supporting and embracing the Fifth Concept as set forth in our World Service Manual. On the floor, the Chair has been very liberal in letting most anyone say anything couched under the phrase of the person making a “Fifth Concept Statement” when that person does not agree with a vote or action of the Conference itself. However, in recent years this wide latitude has been somewhat abused with such statements straying far off point of the topic from time to time, with the makers of the statements becoming irate and personally attacking the Chair, other members of the floor and others even not in attendance. Please, when you exercise this right during this Conference, remain mindful to keep your comments on point related to why you disagree with the action, please remain as calm as possible and be mindful of our overall primary purpose here. Thank you.

John Bodkin – Speaks in favor of the motion. Didn’t participate in earlier debate and have learned a lot regarding how the fellowship is feeling. Saw the vote and how it turned around. This is more that just approving a concept. It is having ideas, rejecting prejudice, and keeping an open mind. Concepts do not threaten the Traditions. Let’s see what is offered and go from there. Looking at it from the perspective of inviting more people in to show how they think and feel. Like in the Big Book this is to support diversity. If we start to shut down ideas…taking a look (which doesn’t mean we have to

go through it)…if it threatens our unity then we can be concerned about it, this is possibly a way that can help us grow. Let them flesh it out and see if it threatens the traditions or impedes our growth.

Bobbie Harmon – Speaks against the motion. I need to be able to walk into any room and be comfortable with me. I don’t have to write a piece of literature about being a woman in recovery. We don’t have to make gay and lesbian people feel special per se, but that we are all special. Exploring the concept means that the next time the piece will probably be submitted. It doesn’t matter who the messenger is, the message should be the same.

Jackie Schickler – Speaks against the motion. Appreciates everything heard and understands that we are talking about a concept. LCF struggles to work on the pieces that are currently in the process. We have 10-12 items at point 4 in the process, so here is a whole list of other materials that can be worked on. I am also against the motion because of the spirit of the Third Tradition. We come together because we have found a common solution to our problem. This would open the door to being special and different.

Greg Barron – Speaks in favor of the motion. Discusses the 12 step literature process and what all would need to be done prior to completion. LCF can come back at another point and determine if it should continue with the document. Concerns will be well represented further down the process. There are a number of checks and balances built into the system. This is just opening the door and taking a look. Regarding being over burdened, these pieces of literature are taken in the order received. This goes to the back of the list, so it is a non-issue regarding it taking the place of other work.

Bryan Bell – Speaks in favor of the motion. He would like lots of these types of pamphlets. To young people, etc. These are for those who may be on the outside looking in, helping them to feel welcomed. We need to be a welcoming fellowship to the outside, and maybe this type of pamphlet can help.

Howard Eley – Speaks in favor of the motion. History of CA, AA saying have to go somewhere else because it is just alcohol. Just because of someone’s sexual orientation, do not think you are better than. We are here to fight the fight to have the doors open here. Do not exclude. What does the pamphlet hurt? These are just informational.

Patty Flanagan – Speaks in favor of the motion. Believes it is demoralizing to tell a committee they can’t think about doing something. These are ideas; please allow them to talk about their ideas. I needed literature to teach me that I am powerless, that I am special and that you love me. I answer calls/emails from people that are gay/lesbians and are not accepted in their particular area. This may reach those people.

Dan Santa Maria – Speaks to motion. Believes that we need to investigate fully and have a solid position behind the piece of literature, and it should be investigated up front. I do not want to be guilty of contempt prior to investigation. We should do our due diligence. Just because another fellowship has similar literature, does not mean it shouldn’t be researched. We have a common problem and I embraced the diversity, but believes this is an outside issue.

Cynthia – speaks against the motion. A clearly defined procedure is in place. The process provides for investigation on a number of levels. The process has safeguards already in place and there is no need to amend the motion.

Greg Baron – Speaks against the amendment. Traditions violations are reviewed at another point in the 12 point literature process. To come up with a new system for this one document and this amendment is totally unnecessary and further complicates things.

Tigua Naghel – Speaks against the amendment. This is asking the committee to suffer and endure more. We should deal with this now.

REFERRALS OR ITEMS REFERRED TO OTHER COMMITTEES, WORLD SERVICE OFFICE OR BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

#2964 – For the sake of the addicts in the growing CA fellowship in countries from around the world please reconsider not publishing any second HFC storybook. Instead use the monies for translating the first edition HFC book in Spanish (the second most used language in the world, next to English).
#4480 – I would like to have the little red books accepted as approved literature. The red books are dramatically cheaper and would keep more money in our groups. Note from Anne Bouley: I believe the intent of this referral is for H&I to give little red books out at Hospitals and Institutions as brought in by our CA groups.
#4481 – I would like meeting in a pocket changed from “How it Works” & “The Promises” to “We Can Recover” and “Reaching Out.
#4524 – I would like to refer to the LCF committee that they start thinking globally about the literature for CA. As a member of the Int’l Outreach Committee, I would suggest that the next volume of Hope Faith & Courage be an International Version. The stories would be written in the native language (i.e. Dutch, Spanish, French, Swedish etc…) and then a copy of the document translated into English. This book would be ½ in English and ½ in the other languages. Basically like many Bi-Lingual Books that can be purchased for bi-lingual children in the US that have English on one side and you turn the book over and it is written in the other language when

reading it from the other end. I believe that the history of CA should be translated into these languages and a short CA history of the country of origin and/or language from whence comes the story and how the members of CA using those languages got there i.e. Dutch Language and a short history of how CA came to the Netherlands and how it is currently doing. This book could be a big seller I believe. And an interesting piece of literature for many to know that CA is a World-Wide Fellowship. I would hope that this next version could be out as soon as enough stories are submitted.
#4561 – I’d like to see LCF help our fellowship raise some funds. Let’s jump on the bandwagon of plastic wristbands i.e., yellow live strong, pink, breast cancer…I see a green, Hope Faith & Courage for $5.00 and $2.00 with the purchase of the book entitled the same. They’ll make good conversation pieces as people will ask “what the green band for?” How can you make this possible?

REFERRALS THAT DID NOT RESULT IN MOTIONS:

Referral #2965 – Do not make any literature/pamphlet specifically for methamphetamine. Instead include/address methamphetamine in the current draft/revision piece of. “…and all other mind altering substances”. Our fellowship was founded on cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. There is a growing 12-step fellowship that specifically is for methamphetamine users.

Referral #2967 – Tradition 12: Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of our program (tools of recovery reading). Whom we see here, what we hear here, when we leaver here, let it stay here! If anonymity is our most precious spiritual gift, why and what is all this. I think it would be great idea to have a pamphlet totally devoted to this very important gift that would help newcomers, old timers, and friends, family and people outside of the fellowship.

Referral #4412 – Is it possible to adapt the AA “I am Responsible” in that it would be worded as –When anyone anywhere reaches out for help—let the hand of CA always to be there and for that—I am responsible or—if it be God’s will—Let it begin with me.

Referral #4551 – Could you please clarify the structure of the meditation book? Will it be like the 24-hour book of AA or will be just a short story that cause one to think or meditate?

Response: We have attached a flyer to the report which demonstrates our suggested format.

Referral #4556 – Motion to establish on internet mailing list that keeps all members of the LCF subcommittee connected and updated on a monthly basis between conferences.

Response: We are already doing that.

Referral #4557 – To develop an area chip as a memento to that CA members collect when they attend meetings in various areas around the US and the world. These ships would have the CA logo on one side and a design specific to the area on region for which they were issued on the other shoe. These chips could generate a profit for CA World as well as for the area or region. They could be sold at individual meetings and I think would be fun for members to collect.

Referral #4562 – Referral 3895 was referred to you from the Unity Committee in regards to creation of a Unity Inventory document to consider for usage in a revised version of the CA Group Inventory. Please advise on your progress.

Response: We never received the referral.

Referral #4527 – Having been a member of CA for almost 8 years, currently, there is no PI or LCF document to help the non-addict understand what is CA (NA, AA & others have seen such a document). The following document was approved and used at the PSR 2001 convention which was also suggested but not approved for the SPR 2003. Because such a document was not CAWC approved, it was not used and need not be used only for a convention piece, check it out.

CLOSING COMMENTS:

I am delighted to say that our updated LCF team are well on the case in terms of producing great pieces of literature. I am well impressed by their attention to detail and their collective love of the spiritual aspect and Traditions of CA. Some of the members of the LCF were very active throughout the year doing great editing jobs and revisions of pamphlets.

This is my third year of working on the committee and it is my privilege to have been elected as Chair of LCF this year. I would like to thank my fellow members of the LCF for their support and all of you on the floor for letting me be of service to Cocaine Anonymous.

Greg Baron – The Twelve Step Workbook is at step 4 (we are in the process of coming up with a draft). The Twelve Traditions Workbook is sitting and waiting until 2007 to be worked on.Stacey Keys-Weston – Re referral 4562, referral 3895; response was “we never received the referral.” What was the action?

Cynthia Cronkhite – We did not locate it, but it will be reviewed once we have.

John Whitaker – Is the LCF committee working on any international or other language pamphlets

Yves – We are drafting the pamphlets in English only.

Leslie Williams – When revisions are submitted, can we get a redlined version?Jack Baron – Yes

Nick Alexander – Has there been a referral for a young person’s pamphlet?

Jack Baron – Yes, the concept was approved last year.

Barry Haynes – Re the Twelve Traditions Workbook not being worked on until 2007, are we in the process of fact gathering for the work.

Greg Baron – Yes, we are gathering information.

Stacey Keys-Weston – Did you consider creating a group inventory document.

Tigua Naghel – Because we did not have the referral we could not respond specifically.

Nicholas Lynn – Is it possible to let us know specifically what the piece of literature is and where it is in the process when saying we have one in the works?
