- COMMITTEE REPORTS
- Public Information Report – Dale S. – acting Public Information Chair.
- Dale S.: I had received a call over a month or so ago that our current chair, due to health reasons, would be unable to attend. I’d like to publicly thank Shauna for all of her work on the committee.
- Last year we were given several referrals, we hope to present to you the, “Dear Abby” letter. This will be a new addition in the P.I. handbook. We will be working on the 1999 survey and guidelines.
- We’ve also created a Public Information Committee Internet information site, where members of the committee and any Public Information Chair, from any Area, can go to retrieve

information, Current Public Information events and other Public Information related documents that may be needed. If you’re interested in getting some more information on this, please address your questions or concerns to the P.I. Secretary, John W., so he can help you and your local Public Information Chair get this position.
- Angela C.: What are we doing with the information (the survey), and why are we doing this every two years and vs. every five or seven?
- Dale: One of the reasons that we do this survey is, mainly, to help with outreach, to find out where we can reach out to the addicts that are still suffering. Recently throughout the nation there have been a lot of Federal funding cuts in treatment, and the survey helps us to pinpoint and streamline our efforts on how and where to focus our efforts on carry the message.
- Kevin M: When we did the first surveys in 94 and 96, we noticed great differences and trends. Do you still see the significant amount of changes in the survey results? And do you continue to see changes in certain trends, and is this the reason why you feel it should be redone every two years?
- Dale: We do see an increase in sobriety, increased ways of “using,” and other information…
- Kevin M: You feel that this information would be helpful to other committees, such as LCF in determining what types of literature to develop, etc.?
- Dale: Yes.
- Jeane F: I helped to compile some of the results from the 99 survey, and I saw some frightening downward trends regarding service work and sponsorship…at the end of the P.I. report when it was discussed about not sending out the results, because of the charts…it may be helpful to remove the verbiage comparing the two.
- Angela: You mentioned talking about, and asking about the different drugs. Now, are we not asking the newcomers to focus on their uniqueness, once again, when we tell them that they need to be focusing on similarities? I see a division.
- Dale: This is one of the reasons that the survey was not released.
- Chair: Please address your ideas or advice to the committee in the form of a referral.
- Steve E. Could you transmit those charts to the WSO for use in other avenues?
- Dale: The survey is a priority to our committee this year, and we would like to get this out.
