Sep 04, 2009 – Day 4, Daily Summary – IT Committee Closing Report

Posted on September 4, 2009November 27, 2022 by caws.archivist

Conference Opens on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 2:41 pm.

Kevin Murphy, Conference Chair, calls the Conference to order.

“We” version of the Serenity Prayer.

Reaching Out – Read by Cynthia Cronkhite.

We will now proceed to Roll Call.

Quorum Determination is 104.

We are going to re-do the seating chart. Ian Young will be checking additions and deletions.

Kevin Murphy made a statement of anonymity. We further request that no working documents containing full names or positions taken by individuals be given to people outside the Conference. It turns out that when you can have a video phone conversation, it is very easy to pass information around the fellowship. We would appreciate you refraining from that activity.

Kevin Murphy reviewed voting and speaking. The people who can vote are people at roll call that state their number of votes. People who can vote are the only ones to make motions, parliamentary inquiry, etc. except when you are making a motion on behalf of your committee.

Next on the agenda are Conference Committee Reports. First on the agenda is IT.

CLOSING REPORT

C.A. WORLD SERVICE CONFERENCE 2009

COMMITTEE WORK THAT RESULTED IN MOTIONS

None

REFERRALS THAT RESULTED IN MOTIONS

  1. Referral number 6047 – We would like the internet committee to add to the guidelines how members can interact and utilize social networking technologies, blogging (including micro) and other interactive technologies to continue to carry the message.
  2. Referral number 6088 – Statement in the WS Manual regarding the use of the CA logo on internet: Refer to S & B; to add additional language to the Service Manual: the use of the CA logo and our protected trademarks on “Facebook”, “My Space”, and other similar sites is not appropriate, or acceptable. The WSBT’s position is that the use of the C.A. logo and our protected trademarks on “unauthorized” webpages/websites is not within the traditions, and we are concerned as to the interpretation of possible affiliation, endorsement, controversy, and over all anonymity.

Our response to referral numbers 6047 and 6088:

Motion: To insert a new paragraph 3 and an additional sentence on paragraph 4 to the Introduction on page 3 of the IT Committee Workbook and Guidelines which reads:

Social networking, blogging, micro-blogging, and other tools have emerged as daily communication methods for individual members. When using these tools, we need always be mindful to not link to C.A. web sites, not use the C.A. logo, Cocaine Anonymous name, or other registered trademarks of C.A. (e.g., “C.A.”, “Hope Faith and Courage”, “We’re Here and We’re Free”, etc.,) and to be respectful of anonymity and other spiritual principles in accordance with the Twelve Traditions of C.A.

This Workbook consists of one main section containing the guidelines for Area and District web sites, and appendices containing specific World Service Office’s policies. It is expected that this Workbook will change to cover other new developments as they arise in this rapidly changing environment. At this time, it is strongly recommended that groups and meetings use their Area or District web sites as their exclusive internet outlet.

Second.

Kevin Murphy: Would you like to speak to your motion?

Approved Page 2 of 52

Cyndie Marshall: Not at this time.

Joy Hutcheson: Point of Order – motion was not fully read.

Kevin Murphy: would anyone?

Elizabeth Saldebar: Did this come from a statement of anonymity from Convention?

Marc Harvey: No

Trevor Scheible: Friendly amendment – to be effective immediately.

Richard Schaffer: I accept that.

Jay Parker: I assume this includes Yahoo Groups.

Cyndie Marshall: No

Kevin Murphy: Prepare yourselves to vote. Motion passes with minor opposition.

REFERRALS OR ITEMS TABLED UNTIL NEXT YEAR; AND ITEMS THE COMMITTEE WILL CONTINUE WORKING ON THROUGH THE YEAR

We will continue to review requests by Area and District web sites to be linked from the CAWSO web site, as well as any requests from the WSO webservant to review existing web sites.

Due to the growing interests surrounding the use of social networking and other technologies, we will continue to further research, consider and advise the fellowship on these matters.

REFERRALS OR ITEMS REFERRED TO OTHER COMMITTEES; WORLD SERVICE OFFICE, OR BOARD OF TRUSTEES

  1. Referral number 6202 – Please place a button on the landing page of www.ca.org that says: “Click here to order a new meeting starter kit”. With a direct link to ordering a starter kit and instructions for starting new meetings.

Committee’s response: While a link entitled “Starter Kit” can be currently found at the bottom of the www.ca.org home page, Referral number 6202 has also been forwarded to World Service Office to consider creation of a larger, more visible link.

REFERRALS THAT DID NOT RESULT IN MOTIONS

  1. Referral number 6151 – That the IT Committee furnish WSC PI Committee with a copy of their 2009 Conference approved guidelines for inclusion in the PI Handbook.

Committee’s response: We have provided the PI committee with a 2009 PDF version (pending approval).

  1. Referral number 6116 – The IT Workbook is badly out of date and needs updating particularly with regard to group web sites, setting up web sites, administering domain names, SEO & use of social networking. Please re-write.

Approved Page 3 of 52

Committee’s response:

  1. Partially resolved in our response to referral number 6047, and
  2. Necessary housekeeping was performed to update the IT Committee Workbook and Guidelines throughout the preceding year and completed during this conference.

NEW COMMITTEE STRUCTURE AS OF THIS CONFERENCE

Chair – Marc Harvey – (Delegate, Orange County CA Area)
Vice Chair – Melissa Lewis (Delegate, Oklahoma Area)
Co Secretary – Keith Perkins (Delegate, Northern Alberta Area)
Co Secretary – Cyndie Marshall (Delegate, Texas Area Service)

CLOSING COMMENTS

It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve CA as a whole with this year’s IT Committee, with new members and returning members. To be able to serve CA as a whole has been a gift, and has allowed me to serve, learn and grow. This committee is grateful for the opportunity to serve all of the members of this fellowship and we look forward to serving you throughout the coming year. Thank you.

Respectfully Submitted:

Marc Harvey, Chair IT Committee

Kevin Murphy: Questions for IT committee?

Kathy Jo Rangno: In regards to Yahoo Groups, I don’t see exceptions for their use. Have you addressed the exception of Yahoo Group?

Marc Harvey: No we haven’t yet. New technology coming into favor and we will spend the next year reviewing and becoming more informed and present more guidelines. This is introductory aspect.

Kevin Murphy: Thank you to IT Committee. Unity is up next.
