LCF received 26 new referrals this year. There are currently 15 other literature projects that are “works in progress.” All progress in this committee is the result of dedicated, hard-working committee members who give us their time, talents and long-serving efforts at the conference and throughout the year.

This year has been mostly dedicated to completing Hope, Faith & Courage Volume II, in order to deliver it to the WSO for publication. Unfortunately some housekeeping issues pushed our timeline past our goal to have it ready for this year’s Conference. We are confident that these will be corrected shortly and that we and the WSO will complete the work for the Holiday season.

We are also extending the deadline asking for submissions for our proposed Meditation book. We are presenting our updated flyer “Psssst… We’re still meditating!!!” (Attached). In this attachment, you will get a glimpse of the format we are working on for the Meditation book.

We received a proposal to develop “LCF Committee Guidelines” which we are ready to propose for your approval and we have included a copy (Attached).

Drafts for new pieces and revisions of current literature continue to develop. Collection of materials for new projects continues. As a result of referrals and input from the fellowship, new concepts continue to be added to the list of works in progress. It remains an exciting process as each member of this committee is able to contribute to the publication of the message of Cocaine Anonymous.

The LCF TIMELINE (attached) is a guide for our continued committee work for 2006-2007. Incorporated into this timeline are specific deadline dates for the Storybook Subcommittee progress. This timeline serves to keep us on track and move the literature projects through the current approval process.

We anticipate communication to continue via email, online groups, mail and phone and we will utilize our budget as efficiently and frugally as possible to accomplish our goals.

Introduction

The World Service Conference Literature, Chips, and Format (“LCF”) Committee reviews, edits, and submits literature to the WSC for approval. It is our function to facilitate the expression of our fellowship’s hope, faith and courage through the writing of material for distribution.

The literature we deal with is of the following types:

The proposed item will expand the inventory of materials adopted by the Fellowship and aids membership in an understanding and application of the Twelve Steps of Cocaine Anonymous and the Twelve Traditions of Cocaine Anonymous.
The proposed item carries the message of C.A. to the addict who still suffers.
The proposed item supplies valuable information to the professional fields with whom addicts would most likely come in contact.
The proposed item clarifies the nature of addiction to the general public and fellowship.

CA literature is subject to the 12 Point Literature Approval Process and the CA Pamphlet Publication Process, both of which are set forth below. Under the 12 Point Literature Approval Process, LCF is responsible for presenting any new literature or substantive changes to existing literature to the Conference for approval. Changes which are not substantive, such as correction of typographical errors, punctuation and formatting issues, are considered housekeeping matters and may be handled by LCF, working in conjunction with the World Service Office.

Organization of the committee

The LCF committee consist of a Chairperson, a Vice-Chairperson, Co-Secretaries, the Trustee who sits on the committee, and other members of the fellowship that are necessary for accomplishment of our statement of purpose.

We are using the Cocaine Anonymous World Service Manual guidelines regarding the WSC Committee officers’ duties, qualifications & selection.

We also require that the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson have one full year of service on the WSC Literature, Chips & format committee.

The committee also consists of delegates and members of the Cocaine Anonymous fellowship with a willingness and desire to serve. Members attend all committee meetings; assist in writing, review and solicitation of literature. They work closely with other committee members throughout the year. Second

I enclose a redline version of the changes (attachment no. 2) I believe the proposed changes clarify and simplify the reading and the proposal should be considered and approved. The newly approved “Mind Altering Substances”, pamphlet in the sentence ‘abruptly stopping the use of tranquilizers, antidepressants, or other prescription drugs can be dangerous and even deadly, and should only be done under the guidance of an informed physicians’ could this sentence be either italicized, underlined, bolded in order to emphasize and bring more attention to the seriously of this matter?

Response: we do not support this concept because we do believe it is not in line with our mission statement.

Please, broaden the scope of the concept piece “to the Gay & Lesbians” to include all marginalized groups, men, women, black, white, bi-sexual, tall, short, fat, thin, Hispanic, single parent, etc, etc. I suggest a name for the concept piece “So you think you are DIFFERENT?” I believe many of us especially when we are new, feel make us “different”. I believe the title and contents will be of interest to all. A piece with such a title and contents would scream to me, to ‘pick it up’ if I felt different in any way at all.

Motion to open-end submission period story book in progress and all future story books by allowing stories to be submitted any time year round. This way there should always be an archive of stories available to select from. This way LCF will not be forced to wait for new submissions or put out requests for new submissions whenever it needs new stories for any reason.

Response: WSC has no proposal for another Storybook; therefore, attempting to manage a catalog of stories would not be the most efficient use of WSO resources.

Response: WSC has several Conference approved book concepts in the queue to be published. The newly formed Archives committee has reported their work collecting and categorizing CA history. Until this endeavor is managed, developing a compilation of historical material, a book, would be premature.

That a Public Information pamphlet be developed to assist the Fellowship in understanding the difference between carrying the message within the fellowship and carrying our message to the public. I am on the WS PI Committee and will assist in this effort.

Response: The Public Information Workbook addresses this referral. LCF thinks the Workbook sufficiently covers this referral. To attempt to summarize this information, this committee believes, would dilute the meaning.

Bill Wilson wrote “It is time to place our unique message before the world…” This is the spirit in which the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous was presented. Cocaine Anonymous should have its own basic text. This referral is based on two traditions:

Tradition 5: Primary purpose is to carry the message to addicts. The Big Book of AA does not serve this singleness of purpose and we are confusing newcomers.
Tradition 7: We (Cocaine Anonymous) are constantly struggling to be self-supporting. A CA textbook would generate revenue required for the organization to survive and grow.

Response: The pamphlet “A Guide to the 12 Steps,” has been created for our fellowship and offers suggestions to the newcomer regarding the AA Big Book language. The LCF unanimously agrees the Big Book of AA is our textbook. LCF also believes we are a fully self-supporting fellowship and HFC Volume II will address the issue of financial gain through sales of our new book.

Would conference consider presenting the book, “As Bill Sees It” Selected Writings of Bill Wilson”, as a suggested CA reading suitable for use in meetings? Background: My home group is quite small at present with 10-15 members attending. Often, after all those who wish to have shared from the floor, we use the remaining meeting time in giving the opportunity for those in attendance to share again in response to a reading from the AA basic text given by the secretary.

The format of “As Bill Sees It” is ideally suited to purposes such as this, being organized into small topic based sections.

Response: The role of LCF is to create new material. This committee is in the process of creating literature (HFC, Volume II and a Meditation Book) that addresses this referral. The approval of literature from outside sources is beyond this committee authority.

Would conference consider making a blanket amendment to all CA literature, in changing the word “recovering” to “recovered”, bringing our literature into line with the AA basic text? Background: the story of how many thousands of men and women have recovered from alcoholism (Alcoholics Anonymous, title page) to show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book—Alcoholics Anonymous pp xiii.

Response: LCF expresses the word “recovering” has its place in our literature. The LCF strongly agrees that the context in which the word “recovered” is utilized is to provide a present tense sense of hope for the addict. This committee cannot do a blanket change in any of our literature as it could change the implied meaning of any sentence.

Response: we feel that this is redundant: CA’s singleness of purpose is addressed in our Preamble. Furthermore LCF has a pamphlet “And All Other Mind Other Substances” and an “I Am Responsible” card in the process.

At home, before reading “Who is a Cocaine Addict”, we have adopted a reading we call “But Why shouldn’t we laugh”. It is a quote from page 132 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. It reads “We have been speaking to you of serious sometimes tragic things. We have been dealing with alcohol in its worst aspect. But we aren’t a glum lot. If newcomers could see no joy or fun in our existence, they wouldn’t want it. We insist on enjoying life…So we think cheerfulness and laughter make for usefulness. Outsiders, we sometimes shocked when we burst into merriment over seemingly tragic experience out of the past. But why shouldn’t we laugh? We have recovered, and have been given the power to help others. I would like to see this added to the meeting format.

Response: thank you for sharing your home group’s innovative approach to this issue. In accordance with Tradition 4^, groups are free to use any of the literature listed on the appendix of the WSM. As such, we do not believe it is necessary to add a new reading to the meeting formats.

CLOSING COMMENTS

I am delighted to say that our new LCF team is well on the case in terms of producing great pieces of literature. I am impressed by their attention to detail and their collective love of the spiritual aspect and Traditions of C.A. Some of the members of the LCF were very active throughout the year doing great editing jobs and revisions of pamphlets.

This is my fourth year of working on the committee and it is my privilege to have been elected as Chair of LCF in the summer of 2005. I would like to thank my fellow members of the LCF for their support and all of you on the floor for letting me be of service to Cocaine Anonymous.

12 POINT LITERATURE APPROVAL PROCESS

Point 1) The idea or the written piece is submitted to the Trustee Literature and Publications Committee and the World Service Conference Literature, Chips and Format Committee

Point 2) The World Service Conference Literature, Chips & Format Committee reviews the idea or piece and may create a motion for the conference.

Point 3) The World Service Conference approves the motion with a mandate to develop a draft.

Point 4) The project is then assigned to a subcommittee for writing.

Point 5) The draft is returned to the World Service Conference Literature, Chips & Format Committee for review with a signed Literature Release Form.

Point 6) The draft is then approved, reassigned or returned to the subcommittee for revision, or the committee may recommend to the Conference that the draft be removed from the process.

Point 7) After the draft is approved by the World Service Conference Literature, Chips & Format Committee, it then goes to the World Service Board of Trustees to ensure that there are neither Traditions violations nor concerns that might affect Cocaine Anonymous as a whole.

Point 8) Following approval by the World Service Board of Trustees, the draft is sent to the World Service Office to arrange for professional editing.

Point 9) The edited draft is returned to the World Service Conference Literature, Chips & Format Committee for its approval.

Point 10) The approved draft is labeled “draft” and is distributed to the delegates for feedback. (If construction feedback is received the draft is returned to Point 6).

Point 11) The Approved draft is published by the World Service Office as a temporary piece of literature labeled “Draft” with the legend: “This draft is pending World Service Conference approval. We solicit your feedback.”

Point 12) The Conference then votes on the piece as it stands without amendments. If not Conference approved, the piece will be either referred back to the committee to point 6 or removed from the process by Conference vote. Upon Conference approval, the word “Draft” and the legend are removed and the piece is printed with the World Service Conference Approved logo.

CA PAMPHLET PUBLICATION PROCESS

Following approval of a new or revised pamphlet by the Conference pursuant to Point 12 of the 12 Point Literature Approval Process, the piece shall be forwarded (in both hard copy and electronic format) to the World Service Office (WSO) by the Literature, Chips & Format Committee (LCF), along with approval from the trustee currently assigned to LCF. This approval may be transmitted via hard copy or fax, with the Committee Trustee signing the cover page. If the materials are transmitted via e-mail, the Committee Trustee shall attach them in read-only PDF format, with a copy to the LCF Committee Chairperson.
Delivery should be completed within 30 days of the close of the Conference.
Upon receipt from LCF, the WSO shall arrange for the piece to be published in hard copy and on the website, as appropriate, with the goal being to complete publication within 90 days following delivery of the piece by LCF. If this 90-day timeline proves unfeasible, the WSO and LCF will determine a mutually agreed alternative timeline.
Before publication in hard copy, the WSO shall forward the printer’s proof to LCF for final approval. If there are any errors, LCF will indicate the correction(s) to be made. The WSO will then obtain and forward a corrected proof to LCF. Once the piece is in its final, correct form, LCF will authorize the WSO to proceed with

publishing the piece in hard copy. The LCF trustee’s signature indicating approval will also be required before publication.

Before publication on the website, the webservant shall forward a proof to LCF for final approval. If there are any errors, LCF will indicate the correction(s) to be made. The webservant will then make the correction(s) and forward a corrected proof to LCF. Once the piece is in its final, correct form, LCF will authorize the webservant to proceed with publishing the piece on the website. The LCF trustee’s signature indicating approval will also be required before publication.
The final wording and formatting (i.e., italics, bold type, paragraphing, etc.) of each piece, both in hard copy and on the website, shall be identical to that approved by the Conference. If the World Service Office Board, as part of its responsibility for publishing all World Service publications, desires to make substantive changes to any piece of literature (i.e., altering the meaning in any way from what was approved by the Conference), the issue shall first be taken up with LCF. If LCF and the WSOB cannot reach agreement, the issue shall be brought to the next Conference.

The C.A. Literature, Chips and Format Committee needs YOU to help write C.A.’s first daily meditation book! Perhaps you already write about your recovery in journals, Step work or C.A.’s online meetings. Why not submit your experience, strength and hope for the meditation book? In addition to a personal excerpt, each daily reading will contain a quotation from C.A. Conference-approved literature. If there’s a particular passage which relates to your recovery experience, please share it with us. Please summarize your personal passage in a sentence or two to be used as the thought of the day.

HOPE (EXAMPLES)

“We wish to assure you that there is a solution and that recovery is possible.” (The First 30 Days)

When I first came into the rooms of Cocaine Anonymous, in my mind, I was the only one that felt the way I did. After listening to the people share, I knew I was not alone; that these people even though I didn’t know them, they knew me. I felt I belonged and that I was finally home.

During the coffee break at a meeting one night, I had a conversation with someone who appeared to know the ropes. He told me his experience of first coming into these rooms and the process which took place from there. I felt a sense of hope that I never did before. I have been an active member of Cocaine Anonymous ever since.

Thought of the Day

One of the best gifts we can pass on is the gift of hope.

“What we failed to do alone we can do together.” (Tools of Recovery)

We share our experiences at meetings because it helps us to stay sober. By sharing we express our love for others who might be having the same difficulties and joys we have had. It helps us all to understand we are not alone and that we have common situations we work through on a daily basis.

cover all marginalized groups. The disease is the same and they way we live with this is different.

Bryan Bell. – I noticed we have a young people in recovery , and crank, and we have one for deaf and hard of hearing. So using that thinking we could include those groups as well.

Cynthia Cronkhite- There are some draft pieces being circulated , however we are working on this piece and it needs to evolve . It can do that before going back to the trustees

Ca needs its own book. A guide to the 12 steps has been created. Is this guide to the 12 steps and a workbook. What resourses are used to create that ? And is that not creating our own text book.

Greg Barron- This committee unanimously feels that the BB 164 is the program we use. One piece is more a 12 X 12 book. The 12 step workbook , may be similar to a step guide.

We have gathered and taken a look at these workbooks and are getting input from the fellowship. That is the point we are at.

We do not even have a rough draft.
