MINUTES COCAINE ANONYMOUS COMMITTEE HEAD/G.S. BOARD MEETING JUNE 19, 1984

ATTENDEES

See attached sheet.

Johnny Segal welcomed the attendees to the first Committee Head/G.S. Board meeting. He discussed the purposes of the committees and pointed out that the committee heads would set up their committees and recruit members. They should then meet with their members and discuss their functions and ways to carry them out.

The attendees introduced themselves. The following committees were represented: Accredidation, Volunteer Lists, Distribution, Hospitals and Institutions, Public Information, Literature, Phones, and Recording Speakers.

Each committee head then presented their ideas on organization and functions, and general discussion followed each presentation. Highlights included the following:

HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS COMMITTEE

Head: Tom Dickson

It was agreed that the first task of the committee is to start gathering panel leaders and members.

In answer to Tom’s question regarding what treatment centers and hospitals to go to, Gil Mosko said that right now, hospitals contact C.A. Public Information will be sending out literature to hospitals to inform them of the availability of panels. Public Information will be the initial contact with hospitals.

It was suggested that the panels go to places that do not have meetings and to closed meetings. Cindy suggested notifying halfway houses.

Tom mentioned that panels could be arranged daily, but it was felt that they would only be needed a few times a month.

A vote was taken and passed for the leaders to have 6 months sobriety, and the speakers to have 90 days sobriety. Panel leaders will be responsible for the conduct of the panel members.

Johnny requested that Tom write up operating instructions and indicated that each committee head should do the same.

It was agreed that a liaison to the Board was needed, and that the Public Information Director would be the liaison.

HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS COMMITTEE (continued)

The next steps:

  • Get a list of panel leaders
  • Acquire a list of institutions

Cindy provided Tom with a list of panel speakers.

Johnny suggested exploring a New Meeting Committee to find areas and people to start meetings.

PHONES COMMITTEE

Head: Krista Errickson

Krista Went to the AA Central Office to find out how their telephone system worked. They have a business .phone with 4 lines on a rotary. There is always a man and a woman available to answer calls. They have a data drawer with information for reference.

They also have foreign exchange lines for incoming long distance callers. It is cheaper than regular lines. It is good for outgoing calls also.

It was mentioned that as of yesterday, C.A. acquired a central office. It is on Washington off of La Cienga, south of the Santa Monica Freeway, and rents for $450 per month.

Krista said that she is ready to implement the phone system. She will have 4-hour shifts for people, around the clock. They won’t need keys on offhours, as the next shift will relieve the prior shift. She has a pamphlet from AA on how to set up the phone system, and she explained how it would work.

She will have 3 people at a time and 3 phones.

It was mentioned that a paid employee needs to be at the office,

24 hours per day. The General Office Manager of AA is a paid employee. Also, tho office needs regular office hours.

A suggestion was made to start slow, and perhaps not to have manned phones all of the time.

Next step: to have the phones hooked up. She must go through 3 phone companies. She wants standard business phones, 3 rotary lines, and foreign exchange lines. It was suggested that she have 2 lines connected by rotary, and one still on the machine with the directory. She will call the phone company to get costs.

Candy suggested a COM line from the outside of the building to the inside. She will check on this.

PHONE COMMITTEE (continued)

Krista will also prepare literature for the phone volunteers. She will work with someone to get it written, perhaps Marshall. It should include numbers to call, and what to say.

Ray Grossa will be the liaison to the Board.

Krista also mentioned looking into deaf phone lines in the future.

VOLUNTEER LISTS

Head: Cindy Duncan

Cindy presented the volunteer lists that she had prepared. She passed out appropriate lists to the various committee heads.

Cindy mentioned that she will have the lists put onto a word processor.

She will be reporting to Ray.

DISTRIBUTION

Head: Cindy Duncan

Cindy stated that the chips sales is going well, and that the literature supports itself.

Sue Bernstein is her assistant.

Cindy will be in charge of ordering chips, and is ordering literature now.

She will write up a description of the distribution system.

It was suggested that C.A. pay someone to go into the central office once or twice a week to be available for representatives coming to the office to purchase chips and literature.

It was agreed to table additional discussion on the office until the next meeting.

RECORDING SPEAKERS

Head: Matt Seegers

Matt said that he would obtain a list of all meetings and General Services representatives and would call the G.S.R.s to get the Secretaries names and numbers. Then on a monthly basis, he would find out who the speakers are at the various meetings, and would go out to the meetings and tape.

RECORDING SPEAKERS (continued)

Matt said that he will need one volunteer to help. He will borrow a cassette machine with 2 targeted for the future. Bruce offered to help with the acquisition of the tape recording equipment.

Tim from Cerritos can reproduce the tapes.

It was mentioned that in order to record a speaker at a meeting, the meeting must take a group conscience and approve the tape sale.

A vote was taken and passed for the tapes to consist only of 2 speakers. Mitch also suggested having “topic” tapes and sell by topic.

There was discussion on the distribution of the tapes. Suggestions:

  • 100 be made up and sold through the monthly G.S.R. meeting
  • The newsletter could advertise available tapes
  • The meetings could place orders with the General Services Reps and there could also be tapes sold at the monthly meeting
  • A motion was made to sell through the G.S.R. and the Central Office. There was no second.
  • Distribution should be through the Central office with the meeting literature person taking orders and presenting them to the Central Office who fills the orders
  • A motion was made to set up an outside entity to sell – not be a part of CA. There was no second.

Johnny mentioned that he might start a Monday speaker topic meeting for taping.

A suggestion was made to notify the meeting secretaries of C.A.’s availability for taping speakers.

Board proofing of speakers was discussed.

Gil will call Dave Hall of the AA Central Office to inquire about tape sales.

Next step: Matt will obtain recording equipment.

ACCREDITATION

Head: Malka

Malka will be recruiting 6 people to help with the accrediting

ACCREDITATION (continued)

process. It was suggested that she recruit people from different areas. Minimum sobriety is one year. After a meeting is accredited, she will contact Misty to have the meetings put on the directory.

Malka will contact NA and AA for their guidelines on accreditation and then write up guidelines for C.A.

If anyone hears of a new meeting, Malka should be contacted.

Malka will report to Robin.

PUBLIC INFORMATION

Director: Gil Mosko.

Bruce is the assistant P.I. Director.

Gil pointed out that his biggest response from the public has been by mail. In particular, they are requesting information about CA, how to start meetings, and where there are meetings in the area.

Bruce setting up a database to store this information on his word processor.

Literature that Gil mails out includes Fact Files, “To the Newcomer” and “First 30 Days” pamphlets, directories, and a cover letter.

ADDITIONAL MEETING

Johnny felt that the next step in organizing the committees was to call another meeting for those committees that were not represented. They included: Retreats, Literature, Sports, Entertainment, Structure, and Typing. The newsletter will be discussed at the next meeting. Barbara will call the committee heads to notify them of the meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 10:25 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10, 1984 at 7:00 p.m. at the new central office.
