PUBLIC INFORMATION REPORT
INTRODUCTION AND OPENING COMMENTS
Opening Comments:
The CAWS-PI Committee worked hard during this conference to complete our work. We had many wonderful opportunities to practice the principles of this program and to place them before our robust and diverse personalities. In the end we accomplished all we set out to do.
A significant chunk of our time involved entering and compiling the surveys. Thanks to member Patrick P who implemented a web-based survey platform that enabled us to enter the surveys and compile the results you will see in a bit.
We discussed and have begun designing ways in which our committee can better support CA as a whole and our local areas. Specifically, we are planning to produce a protocol that could be followed by local areas as they seek to utilize the PSA – both by placing it with local television stations and in the various other ways that it can best reach those who need it. We also discussed our plan to draft a guide to working with drug courts throughout the world. Each of these should be ready for approval by next year’s conference. More globally, the committee will be reviewing the PI Handbook to determine the updates that we must make.
The committee recognizes that much of CA’s future lies in attracting new members to our fellowship. To do that, we must build greater awareness of CA as a whole, especially our primary purpose. We appreciate the work of the WSO and the Trustees whose participation in the National Association of Drug Court Professionals Conference is helping raise CA’s profile to hundreds of drug court coordinators – many of whom were not aware of CA. Our planned guide to local areas will build on that work to enable local area PI people to establish relationships with their courts to ensure that suffering addicts are aware of Cocaine Anonymous.
The committee worked hard to get the survey out to all delegates, but it seems that that effort fell short and many delegates have let us know that they did not receive them in time to distribute them and return them before the Conference. We received 1200 surveys and this time, they captured much of the European Region which was missed last time. However, we did not get responses from any of the Canadian areas, nor many of the states or other international areas.

Therefore, we are asking that those of you who were unable to distribute the survey do so as quickly as possible and return them to the CAWS Office by November 1st. Using our online survey platform, the more comprehensive results we expect will be available for use in the updated fact file by January 1, 2014.
We are working on a method by which the survey will be available on-line in the future. That said, we have some pretty cool looking results from what we have compiled and I’d like Patrick to come up and provide a demonstration of what we have and what we will be able to do. Approve non-drug specific scripts for radio public service announcements. Cocaine Anonymous states that we are not a drug specific fellowship. As a fellowship that is open to anyone struggling with addiction, we should have public service announcements that reflect that idea.
Resulted in 3 motions:
- Motion to create new 15 second and 30 second radio PSA scripts that communicate to the public that Cocaine Anonymous is not a drug specific fellowship and as such helps anyone struggling with addiction.

Please update the PI Handbook and include a new section about “How to Place a Broadcast PSA”.
Response:
There is currently a section in the PI Handbook that does address how to place a PSA (pgs 32-37). Therefore a new section does not need to be included. However, the committee will be working on changes to that section that reflect current broadcasting requirements as well as requests made from the WSO.

Thank you for the referral. This referral was submitted last year and was moved and approved. We are aware that it has not been removed as of yet from the PI Handbook. PI is working with our Trustee and the WSO to have this information updated with changes.

Please urge the WSO to translate the business card on page 55 of the PI Handbook into languages other than Spanish. The information in Swedish and French was provided years ago.

Thank you for the referral. This was a motion from years past and we are aware that it has not been updated as of yet. PI referred a substantially similar request to the WSO Ad Hoc translation committee last year. We are working with our Trustee and the WSO to have all available translations of the business cards made and added to the PI Handbook.

Please address the ethnicity questions on the CAWSPI survey form. The options presented are actually offensive to many within Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. This is a deeply ingrained local attitude, yet if unaddressed and/or ignored is harmful to CA unity and will compromise the effectiveness of the survey results as Swedish members will not participate.

The committee recognizes that the growth in our worldwide fellowship requires us to be mindful and respectful of our cultural diversity and sensitivities. Over the course of the next year we will be examining the survey in conjunction with our fellows and we will propose any changes at conference next year.

To create a systemic marketing plan that encompasses all media outlets, including print, WED, radio, satellite, and other outlets that can be used to advertise CA. This plan should incorporate Drug Court and legal outreach. This plan should liaison with IT, H&I, and the WSOB. This plan should include hospital, referral and medical research. This plan should delegate to the Areas and Regions. Please see me for more information.

After discussion at committee Ll we have determined to develop a global attraction and outreach plan than encompasses the purposes of this referral.

CLOSING COMMENTS
I am grateful to have had seven new members join our committee since the conference began. We have had a great experience in working on our tasks and working through our differences. In the “Spirit of Love and Service” we have accomplished all that we were tasked to do, and are set to continue our work throughout the coming year. We have a great committee, and it has been an honor to serve them as a member and Chair.
